Heres an interesting tidbit of course it comes from a CSR in the HD Department and we all know there info is usually wrong but...

I was/am having a problem with ABC (86) tonight so i called to confirm the issue was on there end. after she agreed the problem was on there end she informed me that i should have my dish aligned due to the fact that 110 is coming in weak.

I asked her when MPEG 4 would be rolling out in this area as in not going to incur the cost of an alignment if i had to upgrade my dish in a month. She informed me that i would get no benefit from the 5 LNB dish due to the fact that my locals come off 110 and 119.

So I ask the experts is this really going to be the case? Will NY locals stay on the older sats? I would assume that in time everything will be on the newer sats, especially with the age of the sats up there now.

You don't need to upgrade to MPEG4 for locals because NYC locals will remain on MPEG2. However, they will be adding NYC locals in MPEG4 in December.

Just for further clarification, those of us in the NYC DMA will get the big 4 HD locals in both MPEG4 and the current MPEG2? Or do you mean that D* will be adding other HD locals that are not already up and running on MPEG2 (e.g. WB, UPN, PBS, etc)?

We don't know exactly what channels will be in the initial MPEG4 offering (presumably the Big 4 - based on the Detroit and Atlanta markets) and that will happen in December. However, unless they offer additional national HD channels in MPEG4 only, there'd be no reason for a NYC sub to "upgrade".

The other variable is PQ - if the MPEG4 channels are superior (fingers crossed), that may also be a motivation. We also don't know if D* may decide that there is no reason to offer the swap deals to NY and LA as long as the same channels are available in MPEG2.

Any chance that when the NYC locals go to MPEG-4 that PBS, UPN and WB will be included? Are they available in any of the other roll-out markets?

i understand from info on one of the "otha" forums that NYC & LA will get the Big 4 plus PBS locals in MPEG4. every other market just gets the Big 4 for now. since the whole idea was to convert to MPEG4 as quickly as possible i don't see why NYC & LA won't get the same deal as other markets.

Well after a few more calls to D* It appears that NY can call for the upgrade. Although i understand (take it with a grain of salt) that we will only be getting the big 4 still. zAt least this gent i spoke with seemed very knowledgable and put me on hold a few times to get the proper information. PS NJ qualifies as the NY area.

Please help, I just got a card in the mail that says my local stations denied waivers. I don't understand, I live in Carmel, NY 10512

I should have gotten waivers cleared here, right. I have talked to some people on here that had waivers in putnam county.

I have my DirecTV HD upgrade tommorrow between 1-5.

Can I still get my HD locals through my dish, even though this card says I was denied.

What are your "local" stations?

I would have assumed, in Carmel, they would be the NYC stations. So why do you need waivers?

my locals are the same as the 5 boroughs. Does that mean I don't need waivers?

what exactly are waivers? are they needed for locals through the dish in LA and NY?

You only need waivers if you aren't in NY or LA. Since NY channels are offered by D*, you'll get them fine.

If someone in the Cleveland market wanted the NYC channels D* provides, he'd have to get waivers from all the Cleveland stations in order to get out of market network affiliates.

Not yet, I am waiting until the upgrade is offered here in NY, plus at the moment, I wouldn't get anything new if I upgrade, no new channels available at the moment.

Didnt see HDNet, HDNetMovies, TNT, or ESPN2 in that mix. Eye of the beholder. No HDLite comments please. I like things on those channels.

Call them and tell them you are thinking about dropping D* to go to cable. They will probably give you $5 or 10 off for the next 6 months.

Simple..... YOU decide what it would take for you to stay and give cust. retention a call. State your demands and accept the outcome.

It's a win/win situation, right?
