Has anyone else noticed the volume level on WQAD during the HD broadcasts is now considerably lower than it used to be? Just the past three or four days this has developed -- when there's a local break, it just blasts, but during HD broadcasts, I've had to crank my volume level WAY up. I've e-mailed the CE...will post any response.

For what it's worth, WOI-TV (same owner, same issue -- analog 5/current DT 59/elected DT 5) objected when the Pax station, which has no digital counterpart, tried to snap up Channel 29 in central Iowa for a DT. (See Page 4 of the order you'll find in .pdf at this link.) WOI-TV argued that they'd be "adversely affected" by Paxson's selection of 29. In the end, the FCC decided not to let Pax start a DT there.

Based on that, I wouldn't be surprised if corporate decides to go to the third round on WOI, WHBF or both.

On the other hand, they have been known to economize on things ...

Well, folks, it looks like today's the third-round deadline.

If WHBF doesn't file a form by close of business today, it looks like they'll be operating their DT on Channel 4 after the transition.

As of about 1:15 pm today, they still don't show up. (Neither does WOI-TV in Des Moines, for that matter.)

One word of caution: If they do file, we may not know about it until well into next week since Monday's a holiday.

Thanks for the update, dline. Here's hoping it shows up later this week.

Here's hoping it does, too.

The FCC updated its database at 11:01am our time last night ... 13 more applications showed up, none of which are from WHBF, but there's no way that's the end of it.

Well, it's now Friday morning.

When I posted Tuesday morning, there were only 25 stations in the entire U.S. of A who filed Round Three election forms.

As of right now, there are still 25 ... and WHBF isn't one of them.

Given that forms are usually filed electronically by now, I would almost have to think that the third round is over, though I will keep looking.

The good news is that, according to Trip in VA who's been helping to track the third round in this thread, there'll be only three other Channel 4's in the whole country when the transition is over. One will be in Alaska; another will be in Oak Hill, WV; and the third will be in Danville, KY. Hopefully this will convince the FCC to let WHBF use enough power to serve its current market.

WOI is another story -- there are 5's in Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Tennessee ... a lot of 5's out there.

Views are strictly my own unless otherwise noted.

Anyone watching WHBF DT tonight? It's been cutting out, pixelating, etc. No matter where I orient my antenna, I'm having problems. It goes from full signal to no signal, then back. Frustrating.

Hey folks, is anyone else not receiving KWQC-HD (6-1) OTA? I'm picking up the weather on 6-2 at 100% strength, along with all the other digital signals.

Maybe their HD transmitter is off for some reason?

Thanks,

Frank

I can't tell you right now. Tivo has both tuners busy. Sorry. I can tell you it has been OK for me and I would think if the transmitter was off 6-2 wouldn't work.

Still no luck pulling in KWQC-DT 6.1. I re-scanned manually, and "forced" my tuner to scan it, to no avail. I would suspect my antenna or tuner, but I'm able to pull in all the other QC stations just fine.

Looks like it may be time to go to the manual - LOL!

Frank,

Are you still getting the weather channel at 6.2? If so, then you should be getting the station fine. You might want to try manually tuning the physical channel at 56-1. I've seen a few occasions where tuners have become confused and lose the PSIP remapping. If the station shows up there, you may leave it on there for a bit and eventually the box may grab the correct 6-1 mapping.

(Note: Comments and other information in my posts are strictly my opinions only and not those of my employer or their parent company and network.)

Frank, I checked last night at 9 p.m. and was picking up KWQC-DT just fine (HD). So I believe it might be your tuner. Remember it's actually 56-1 mapping to 6-1. What tuner are you using?

EDIT: I see kc0bsn already mentioned that. But I agree....manually tune in 56-1 to see what happens. I know that KWQC reset its PSIP about a week ago (I had noticed their program info was missing, e-mailed the CE, and he fixed it).

Thanks for the info, guys! I'm running a Humax HFA100. You can have it "auto" scan all available channels, or "force" it to scan 56, for example.

Maybe the update at KWQC confused it a little bit. Will try tuning 56-1 manually after work today...

Hey fellas,

I still can't pull the KWQC channels in. I worked with the tech support folks to "reset" my tuner, and I've run several scans of all channels, and made it scan only channel 56.

Funny thing is, the tuner pulls in the guide info for WTVP (47-1, 47-2, 47-3). This is out of Peoria, right?

And with my Humax, I can't tune directly to 56-1 - it has to scan and recognize the signal first. I guess I'll try swapping coax and/or moving the antenna some more.

Thanks for the advice so far. At least it's not football season LOL!

Frank - That is odd....the funny thing is that you're getting WQPT-DT and KLJB-DT (I assume), and they're at the same location as KWQC-DT. And didn't you say you were able to pull in 56-2 at one time? Now you're saying you can't get any KWQC-DTs? And, yes, WTVP is from Peoria. I'm not familiar at all with the Humax unit, so I'm not much help there. When you say you've worked with the tech support folks, do you mean Humax tech? If you PM me, I can give you the name and e-mail of the CE at KWQC, and he might be able to help.

bierboy,

Yes, I meant the Humax tech support folks. Nice people, and available 7x24.

I actually have been in touch with one of the engineers (Doug) at KWQC, via the station feedback form. He has been very helpful so far.

I'll post an update as soon as I have one...

Frank - What is the model # of the humax?

I can not think of any way you would be pulling in a Peoria guide unless you are receiving that signal (which I show WTVP being on 46), or you have a Humax DirectTV model.

If the latter is the case, you would be getting the guide data from DirectTv and not OTA. My Zenith DirecTv tuner allows me to program in 2 markets for guide data. You may want to check that they are not conflicting. That is IF it is a DirecTv model.

hdtvincr, the Humax tuner model is HFA100. It's a great little box -- much better that paying Mediacom by the month! It has several output connections including HDMI for my Panasonic projector.

http://humaxusa.com/products_HFA100.html

It is strictly OTA -- not DirecTV. It has worked like a charm since day one, until this little glitch with KWQC lately. Good thing it's summer and I don't have a lot of TV viewing time.

Later,

Yeah, it's really weird. When I first noticed the problem, 6-2 (the weather feed) was fine - only 6-1 had dropped off. One of my troubleshooting steps was to disconnect the antenna, run a full scan to remove all the channels, and then connect the antenna and scan from scratch. At that point, the tuner would recognize neither 6-1 nor 6-2 any longer.

OK,

All I have to say is Doug at KWQC is the man! He had the folks at the station temporarily patch the HD feed directly to the tower, and BOOM - my HFA100 locked right on.

Now (unfortunately for Doug) it's a matter of figuring out what the computers (PSIP?) are doing that my tuner doesn't like. At least there's a few months before NFL football starts!
