I've been bugging Verizon about the HD feeds for MSG and FSNY for a while. At first they were very adamant that they would be getting the feeds. I've noticed a significant curtail of the enthusiasm over the past couple of months. I am seriously doubting it will ever happen. Cablevision has absolutely no incentive to provide them.

I guess thats true, but it does show that CV is worried about the competition...
also, the most aggrivating thing is how you see So.NJ get philly's fsn hd and boston gets that local fsn hd, it's only the ny/nj metro area FiOS getting F'd out of the HD sports...

Rob-no.nj

There are reasons for this. Verizon struck a deal with Comcast not to offer TV in Philadelphia for a certain time (I think until 2009 but I cannot recall for certain) in exchange for being able to offer CSN-Philly in NJ.

You are wrong about Boston. They do not have any local sports channels in HD on FiOS according to this:

http://www22.verizon.com/NROneRetail.../MA_MAArea.pdf

Cablevision did acquiesce on FSNE-HD but that is because they do not provide service in MA so Verizon will not directly compete with them (Verizon cannot offer FiOS in CT) and because they only own a 50% stake in FSNE.

I had thought that Comcast had a stake in NESN but that is wrong. I am sure it will be available on FiOS eventually since it is available on D* and E*.

I am just glad the Mets and Yankees formed their own networks to get away from Cablevision.

Yeah, now i just have to figure out if me being in No.Jersey falls into the NY area, or the northern nj section of fios coverage, b/c the nj channel list does not have SNY HD and the NY listings do...

Andy,

Verizon does provide FiOS in Manhattan, but only in a few greenfield locations. Manhattan is a difficult location to obtain city franchise, build permits as well as agreements with MDU owners. Any deploments in the city will be will orchestrated but limited. Can provide more specifics tommorow.

Yeah, i know what you're saying Tiyuri, but the FiOS site is vague at best on it's areas, it asks you to pick a state, then an area of that state...
for NY they only have one choice, NY AREA and for NJ they have No. and So. NJ,
where i am in NJ, i am 10 minutes away from the city in bergen county...many
of whom who reside here consider this a "NY AREA" considering i can get to MSG quicker than i can to NEWARK airport...so why wouldn't i expect to at least have
Sportsnet NY HD for the Mets?
ya know what i mean?

But the key is that you selected a state. And the state you live in is NJ. You may consider it "NY area" but it is NJ first and foremost.

Last weekend, I saw banners "FiOS Is Here" on two of Verizon telephone buildings. Richmond Ave near Victory Blvd and the one on Amboy Road near Anadale Rd.

ORANGETOWN, N.Y. - Residents of this Rockland County community are a major step closer to having a real choice for their cable television services, thanks to a vote Monday night (March 12) by the Orangetown Board of Trustees to approve a video franchise for Verizon. The board's vote brings to 29 the total number of New York communities that have approved agreements authorizing Verizon to offer its FiOS TV service.

"This is great news for residents of Orangetown, who now have a new choice for their video entertainment," said Monica Azare, Verizon senior vice president for New York and Connecticut. "Verizon's FiOS TV offers consumers something they've never had before, with incredible pictures and sound clarity and innovative new services - all from a brand they know and trust."

Orangetown joins a growing list of New York communities that are paving the way for competition and choice in the television market. In addition to Orangetown, Verizon has been granted video franchises in Rockland County by the communities of Clarkstown, Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack and Grandview-on-Hudson. Verizon also has video franchises in the Westchester County communities of Irvington, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, Eastchester, Mount Kisco, Elmsford, Port Chester, Tuckahoe and the Town of Greenburgh, and on Long Island in the villages of Massapequa Park, Cedarhurst, Laurel Hollow, Lynbrook, Mineola, East Rockaway, Farmingdale, Valley Stream and Freeport, and the towns of Huntington, Smithtown, Hempstead and Oyster Bay.

As with all local franchise approvals in New York, the agreement between Verizon and Orangetown is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.

I'm getting FiOS internet service here (Staten Island) on Saturday. An installer was here today to bring the fiber optic cable to the house (he also put the ONT box on the outside since he'll finish things up Saturday morning).

Anyway, I asked about the TV service and he said that VZ is trying to get Staten Island split off from the rest of the city. Since the almost the entire island is ready for FiOS, they don't want to wait for the rest of the city. He said it could be available in two months. But who know how long two months really is in this case.

Regardless, it is just a matter of time.

considering we were first to get FIOS internet, I could see this happening. It would be great as Time Warner sucks!

A Verizon rep told me over the phone that Mercer County gets the NYC Locals in HD. Nothing on their web site says that. Can someone confirm. I would switch if I am assured that I would get YES and the NYC Locals in HD so I can see the Yankees and Giants in HD.

Comcast only has the Phili channels in HD which means I get the wrong local news in HD and very few Giants games in HD.

Anybody hear anything about SNY-HD in NJ? One of the business office reps told me, "Guaranteeed by Opening Day." Unless she meant the home opener, I guess she was making that up.

The Mets home opener is technically opening day for SNY-HD since they don't show road games in HD.

If you download the Mercer County Channel Lineup from the FiOS programming webpage (http://www22.verizon.com/NROneRetail...rcerCounty.pdf)it clearly states that both the NY and Philly locals are available in HD as well as Yes HD. I just printed it and it's dated March 2007. It does NOT show SportsNet NY in HD as being available. As a Yankee fan and Giants fan living in Mercer County, this is prompting me to test drive FiOS TV. I've been a DirecTV user for years, they have my parents North Jersey address as my address so I've been getting the NY locals even though my town is in the Philly dma. But DirecTV's recent switch to MPEG4 has made me lose YESHD and is making me upgrade a bunch of gear and do some unnatural things to get the new gear installed. I think I'm willing to give up the Sunday Ticket and MLB Extra Innings for better picture quality and ending my dma switcharoo dance. Since I already have FiOS internet, I decided to test drive FiOS TV on my main HD set for 30 days, if I like it I'll switch, if not I'll cancel since they have a 30 day money back guarantee. Unfortunately the first install date I get was 3 weeks out.

I checked with SNY on this and they said that all home games will be in HD again this year but not away games.

SNY will once again provide all home games in true HD, however, at this time we have not confirmed whether any of our away games will be available in true HD (all away games will be upconverted to HD, which is still a better quality than SD). Offering away games as well as show highlights and clips in true HD is certainly something we are working towards.

Thank you very much for the link. Please keep us posted on how your trial goes. The channel line up looks very good except for no WNET. As a Yankees / Giants Fan as well as being originally from NYC I really want the NY Channels. It is likely that I will switch from Comcast soon but I was hoping to find some people in Mercer County that have already switched to get feed back on the service.

I can live without NY based PBS WNET, I don't watch a lot of it, and Mercer County FiOS carries both the NJ and Philly PBS channels in HD. I'm excited that FiOS carries WWOR in HD, as DirecTV does not and I was never getting the games in HD on Channel 9. I'm not sure that they're in HD, but I think the home games are.

My FiOS TV install is scheduled for 4/23. I'm going to run both DirecTV and FiOS for a few weeks so I can compare PQ, the DVR functions, ect. It's going to be hard for me to switch from DirecTV, I've been with them a long time. I'll especially miss the Sunday Ticket and MLB Extra Innings. I've watch a lot of Red Sox games over the years to keep tabs on how they're playing and my father-in-law is a big Cardinals fan, so it was always easy to get free baby sitting on the nights Cardinal games were on. I really wish FiOS carried Rangers games in HD, but understand why Cablevision is holding that back from the deal they have with Verizon.

I'll try to remember to come back to this thread and provide an update.
