Numerous drop-outs in northern NJ Monday night on 502 and 507 and then around midnight all channels disappeared. On screen message said there was an outage in the area and at 1:30am service was restored.

Once WNET fixes their hardware I hope they'll re-program some missing shows. My 3 am Tuesday attempted recording of the repeat of Sunday's badly glitched 8 pm Masterpiece new series resulted in a black screen (no signal). Yup, the refugee problem in Europe and elsewhere is more important. -- John

EDIT: WNET is back on channels 13 and 513 as of ~2 pm or earlier today

It wouldn't be so bad if we had WNET on-demand, but for some reason we don't. My parents have it on their Optimum service at their house in NJ.

Luckily it seems that WNET (and most PBS stations) have most of their programming available for watching on-demand through their website these days....

Thanks. Having searched my on-demand service a few times for PBS, I concluded in error there wasn't any stored PBS programming. Puzzling why Verizon's Ultimate package, or any FIOS programming service, doesn't include VOD for PBS in NYC.

Meanwhile, like someone in the DSL Verizon forum, looking forward to a scientific explanation of 13/513's outage. While searching the 'net for solar radiation maps/charts yesterday came across a blackened U.S. map with only an ominous red zone above NY/NJ. Thought it had a title about the Japanese reactor leak. Moved on and couldn't find the map again today. Too fantastic. Started thinking about Orson Welle's 1938 "War of the Worlds" broadcast about Jersey. -- John

Any plans on Verizon offering 4K channels/programming soon or in the future?

No major US broadcasters are doing 4K. There are some one off events that DirectTV airs, but no regular programming because there's no definitive way to get 4K programming to the customer... yet.

Don't expect to see 4K through your current cable box. I'm not sure if those boxes even support the 4K versions of HDMI. But more importantly, Verizon doesn't have the QAM TV bandwidth to add a 4K channel - they are pretty full. (4K needs the bandwidth of 2-4 HD channels - depending on frame rate and compression. Uncompressed, QAM only has 135ish frequencies. Verizon is already heavily compressing channels to fit more programming down the pipe)

Officially, Verizon has signed a programming deal with a company that has some 4K content. But none of that programming is of broad interest - mainly eye candy channels.

Unofficially, they are beta testing an IPTV solution. It sounds like Verizon wants to eventually move all TV services over to IPTV (internet protocol TV). That solution would replace all your existing cable boxes and cable cards with little network boxes (and maybe apps) and would give them the bandwidth to feed you a 4K signal. The user experience will be significantly different: instead of sending all channels down the pipe to your box, you'll select a program, wait a split second, and only that programming will come down the pipe to the box. As a result, channel hopping will have a slight delay. Also, the new interface is reportedly more program centric and less channel centric.

There is a very in-depth discussion in the Verizon Fios TV forum over on DSL Reports about the IPTV solution. So far, it seems to be months behind schedule. And converting all users to IPTV is a 5+ year plan - not something that can happen over night.
