I set my secondary market to a zip code in Reno NV. That gives me the guide data for AntennaTV on 2.2 although with the distant call letter (don't care). That setting also allows the Genie to tune in 4.3 but without any programming info, just says "Sign off".

I'm a bit more philosophical about the lower bit rate on the subchannels. Most of the programming is what I watched as a kid on an old crappy rural antenna system so it still looks better than what I watched back then.

I agree that much of the old stuff looks much better even at the sub-channel bit rate. Maybe some of it has been remastered for DVD or the digital up-scaling at the station or our TVs improves the image?

WOW! HDTV sure isn't living up to its potential today! I'm watching the Green Bay / Dallas playoffs on Fox2 and up close, the compression artifacts are horrible on both satellite (Dish) and OTA channels. Both seem equally affected so there is no way to know if this is caused by Fox, Dish, sub-channels or (probably) all the above. What a joke. While certainly better than old SD, PQ is not nearly as good as it should be. I can't help but wonder where 4K will take us. What good will all those bits be if sub channels, compression and other factors each deduct from the true potential?

Rant off.

I had made the same observation. The picture wasn't too bad on my older 42" 720p plasma, but the artifacts REALLY showed on my newer 60" 1080p plasma, using OTA.

Those days of pristine HD are gone and won't be back on broadcast TV. Get Blue Ray disks if you're that nostalgic.

Go to the event in person if you want the highest definition possible.

Complaining about the water that's gone under the bridge and is already out to sea isn't going to bring it back.

Looks like Justice is running a test loop that says that the programming starts on the 20th.

Can't pick up 7.x, signal doesn't make it out this far.

No, it's UHF 36. Unfortunately, its measly 2 kW OTA signal is immediately adjacent to channel 5's 838 kW signal, so it's really hard for many folks to pick up. Mako has a CP to relocate to channel 19, but who knows if they'll be willing to spend the money and actually do it given the likelihood of a spectrum repack.

I see that it's going to be 16:9 and tonight 5 gave a free preview when during the last puzzle on Wheel Of Fortune tonight they somehow switch over to it for a minute or 2.

They were running "real" programming as of last evening instead of the test loop. I watched "The Investigators" from 5 to 6.

I didn't check the details, but it was full screen, low resolution.

I like how 30-3 Grit TV broadcasts in 16:9, and widescreen movies are actually broadcast in 16:9. In fact, Panavision/Cinemascope movies are broadcast in 2.35 with letterbox bars at the top and bottom. Excellent.

My only complaint (well, aside from the paltry bitrate) is when they show 4:3 movies, they stretch the movie to fill the 16:9 broadcast frame.

If they can use letterbox/horizontal bars for 2.35:1 movies, why can't they also use windowbox/vertical bars for 4:3 movies?

Finally got around to watching Mackenna's Gold, on the DVR from November.

Disappointing to see 30-2 GetTV broadcasting in 16:9, only to put up black bars on the sides and show the movie in 4:3 pan and scan anyway.

Ok, so we're up to how many subchannels that DirecTV will probably never map? 3?

(5.3, 7.3, 30.3)?

Used to be able to still do a scan on the Genie but they took that away.

I used to go to a website that listed these but now I can't a comprehensive list on sites I check.

Way more than that. Off the top of my head: 4.2 (?), 4.3, 5.3, 7.2, 7.3, 30.2 (?), 30.3, 46.2-46.6

Maybe more or less, I haven't checked recently. I still have my secondary market set to Reno NV so I can get 4.2 mapped as KRNV but I don't know it that's still needed. I get my Hogan's Heroes every weeknight, so I'm happy with it as is for KMOV.

Similar issue with Dish Network. A handful of sub channels are correctly listed in the Hopper Guide but the majority contain NO DATA or incorrectly mapped data. I seldom tune into any of these SD channels because without accurate Guide data, one never really knows what's on.

The issue with Dish is they only take a part of the listings they get from Tribune. Normally they remap the satellite guide info they get for the networks they carry on satellite. Everything else is a crap shoot. DIsh has made it clear they aren't supporting any new info on subchannels. If a station changes affiliation yes it will change. But nothing new added

Here is the list of subchannels dish supports gudie info on the OTA channels
2-01 KTVI TSID 0x0689, Subchannel 01 (DISH Channel 6456/8593)
4-01 KMOV TSID 0x068B, Subchannel 01 (DISH Channel 6454/8591)
5-01 KSDK TSID 0x068D, Subchannel 01 (DISH Channel 6455/8592)
5-02 KSDK2 TSID 0x068D, Subchannel 02 (DISH Channel 14896)
9-01 KETC1 TSID 0x068F, Subchannel 01 (DISH Channel 14224)
9-02 KETC2 TSID 0x068F, Subchannel 02 (DISH Channel 14225)

Directv uses a database and sadly they arent updating it either. You can use diferent zip codes to get the missing channels in the guide (to tune) and/or get guide info. It can be a cluster especially in bigger markets but it can be done

Dish doesn't have that option. On their side it at least scans the channel in

Good info. Sadly, even less OTA subs are listed correctly on Dish and this seems rather shortsighted on their part because the OTA channel listings look like a work-in-progress. Oh, well, it's probably just a low priority for them.

Just using St. Louis and Springfield, IL markets (since I get Springfield off the back of my antenna), looks like the -2 are well covered (most are there), but nothing in the -3 in DirecTV's database. I do get -3 and -4 on PBS for Jacksonville, but that's probably only because they've been there forever, like every other PBS station.
