I'm simply using the signal quality meters of three different brands of tvs. All three show 100% strength with no glitches. (except of course if there is any lightning in the area)

WOCK broadcasts on RF4. You need a VHF-Lo capable antenna (big).

Thanks for answering my question. I'm using a radioshack antenna (Since I can't post a link.. It's called Radioshack Amplified HDTV Antenna.. got it for $35 bucks)
I get 78 channels but I don't get channels: 13.1, 13.2 , 13.3 , 13.4, 13.5. So I guess I need one of those big antennas(Outdoor) I rent so I don't think I'll be able to get that. But again Thanks for the info.

It doesn't have to be an outdoor antenna, but it needs to support the long wavelengths of VHF-Lo. Most indoor antenna's without the big dipoles (rabbit ears) will have problems.

The past 2 days I have been getting perfect reception with a signal in the low 60's, about 5 points higher than the best signal I was getting before.

Are fluctuations like this normal? I am new to OTA, so I don't know whether signals may vary slightly by season or with warmer weather (or something else), but hopefully I continue to see readings in the 60's and I will be happy.

My reception remains pretty stable year round. The exceptions being some early mornings during the spring - early autumn seasons and evenings when it is very hot and humid. During those times atmospheric conditions sometimes allow very distant stations to overcome the Chicago stations. So, in a sense, yes, weather conditions can and do play a roll in reception issues from time to time.

Can anyone give me antenna brand/model recommendations for Crystal Lake. In a 2 story home near main beach. I'd prefer to put it in the attic but could also roof mount. Also, I'd rather buy more antenna than I need so I don't lose a signal when it rains. I'm also ok with 2 antennas, one pointed to Chicago and the other to Rockford for WBBM as another Crystal Lake poster had suggested. Also, is there a product that will join the signals from 2 antennas? Do I need a pre-amp, I've seen posts saying yes and others saying never. Thanks...

Combining antennas is a bad idea where you're at. We get stations from Milwaukee, Rockford, & Madison. No matter where you aim an antenna, there is always something coming in from the sides or rear, Madison in particular. Combining antennas negates the directionality of the antennas and during times of atmospheric ducting these interfering stations will overpower the desired signals. I speak from experience.

A better solution is to keep the antennas separate and by editing the sources of each tuner you can dedicate tuners to each metro area the antennas are pointed to.

You might want to try aiming an antenna at Milwaukee instead of Rockford. I find its easier to receive and WDJT, CBS, is a powerhouse compared to Rockford.

You'll also need an amp at the antenna and possibly a line amp if you're doing any kind of splitting.

I live in Downers Grove on 6th floor of an apartment. Somehow I can never get CBS and NBC. My apartment is facing south West. Is that the reason I don't get CbS?

Partially, probably. You didn't identify what antenna you have, but I'll take a SWAG that its a UHF-only model.

As for the actual antenna, a ChannelMaster 4228 HD should do the trick very nicely. One on the south side of Crystal Lake gets all the Chicago stations; his is mounted on the roof. Otherwise, Dicko2 is correct.

Thanks. I bought a clearstream2v yesterday and now I get more than 65 channels including cbs and nbc. I need to keep the antenna in my Balcony to get all these. If I keep it inside home, I end up with only few channels and no CBS/NBC

My previous antenna wasn't UHF alone. I used to get CBS when I lived in Skokie. It is an indoor flat antenna.

Glad to hear the C2V did so well for you. It's a bit large for an indoor antenna, but will run circles around just about anything else once you figure out how to exploit its capabilities.

Most "flat" antennas do a pretty lousy job on VHF, they're not big enough.

On what may be a related note, the Create channel is broadcasting in widescreen now. I think it's still 480i, though.

Flicks? Here's my collection. And I've seen a lot, too.

Yes, it's 480i@16:9.

If I remember, WTTW-HD started at 1080i, ran 720p for awhile, then went back to 1080i? I never watched Create or V-Me much, but Prime was surprisingly good for SD.

I can tell it's much more compressed. On my Comcast DVR, a recording is now barely 3%/hour of it's tiny 120G drive. It used to be 4-5%.

I was recently thinking the same thing about all channels, not just WTTW.

On my Media Center recordings I seem to remember them being about 8 to 10GB an hour of recording. Now I'm seeing 6-8GB an hour.

Also, last night WYCC broadcast one of those high definition eye candy programs, an aerial tour of Hawaii, that used to be common when HD was new. From years ago, I remember the eye popping detail that made the aerial scenes simply stunning. Last night it was just a blurry fuzzy mess of pixels that looked no better than standard definition.

On my Comcast DVR, it does highly vary from channel to channel. WBBM is the highest, nearly 8-9%. WLS 7.1 is the worst, although WTTW is probably about the same now.

Did a quick look. Stretch-O-Vision on what I was watching, probably an older 4:3 SD show.

So far, everything I've seen on Buzzr is in stretch-o-vision, even the commercials.
