I used the Channel Master CM-4228HD, received all channels including CBS. I had it mounted on a pole attached to a tripod on the ground, so it was maybe 4ft above ground. If I mounted it on the roof, I would think reception was even better, but I got all the channels I wanted just above ground-level.

I didn't use an amp at all, it went straight to HDHR receivers.

I lived in Geneva (no longer live in IL, moved to AZ )

Robert Feder is reporting that The CW in Chicago is moving from WGN to WPWR this fall.

Quote:
Robservations: CW Network losing WGN affiliation, moving to WPWR

In a rare change of network affiliations in Chicago, the CW Network will move this fall from Tribune Media WGN-Channel 9 to Fox-owned WPWR-Channel 50, sources said Sunday. The switch, expected to be announced Monday, will return “Chicago’s Very Own” to a strictly local programming lineup, starting in September. Tribune Media still owns CW affiliates in 12 other markets, including New York and Los Angeles.

Sources said the move to WPWR, low-rated sister station of WFLD-Channel 32, is expected to mean a shift of less than $4 million in local advertising revenue.

The same question occurred to me when I read Mvcg66b3r's post just before Dishrich's.

WPWR's signal on physical 51 already has what, three two 480i subchannels besides MNT in 720p?.  Even if the CW is cut from WGN's current 1080i to 720p, how well can one physical ATSC channel carry two HD streams plus three two in SD?  Something's gotta give.  WLS doesn't always do so well with two 720p plus one 480i on physical 44.

Last edited by dattier; 05-24-2016 at 08:09 AM. Reason: WPWR has only two SD streams now, not three any more.

KCOP in Los Angeles already runs My Network TV at 11PM rather than 8PM. No reason WPWR couldn't do the same.

Since CW programming is technically 3 hours a day during the week (2 a night + that Bill Cunnigham show in the afternoon) they could carry CW from 7-9 local and then My at 9-11, 10-midnight or whenever they want.

Yes, thank you both.  [Trip's saying "the same" doesn't adjust for Central Time but UncleHonkey remembered.]  Running CW from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and MNT starting at 9:00 or 10:00 would work, and there would be no need to cram a second HD stream into the channel.  We'll still be getting CW in 720p instead of 1080i, but that's minor.

(I erred earlier: WPWR has only two SD streams now.)

Looking at the schedule for WPWR I could see them doing My at 11 or even midnight. I'm sure those syndicated shows (big bang, simpsons, mother) that are after My programming still get the viewers.

It would be interesting how they will ID then. I'm sure they ID right now as "My50"...hmmm...MyCW50?

help choosing antenna

I just moved to the area and currently have an antennas direct DB2 antenna. While it pulls a lot of the Chicago stations, I do not receive VHF. Can someone help point me towards a decent inexpensive antenna that could do the job better? I am thinking I am going to have to go yagi style.

here is my report:http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...e2cb0edd454db3
And I am only really concerned about the major networks (around 38 mi)

There's only one station out of Chicago using VHF which is CBS on 2.1 (real channel 12). I use an MCM Electronics ”Stellar Labs” VHF-Hi yagi with good results.

How far away do you pull stations from? I was actually looking at that antenna from MCM and Parts express. Is this the one you are talking about? http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/30-2440

Is it possible to rotate it to point toward Milwaukee?

WDJT, ch58, should be putting in a pretty good signal to Grayslake.

Are they the same antenna?

It looks like WOCK has dropped MundoMax. 13.1 is now just Infomercials.

I was right

per zap2it staring 9/1 on WPWR 50
CW from 7-9
My from 10-midnight
CW (Bill Cunningham and then whatever replaces it this season) from 2-3

Anger Mgmnt episodes that run from 11-midnight now will get pushed 90 minutes out (12:30-1:30am). Syndicated programming stays the same right now

ABC 7 antenna

I've been having some trouble with ABC 7 dropping out recently. Today I drove past the Sears tower (what you talkin' about Willis?) and noticed the ABC 7 antenna is missing from the top of the east stack. Any insider information?

Thanks Andy, interesting article. Seems odd that they would have a major issue with an antenna that was installed just 4 years ago. I recall something similar happening to a new antenna in Boston and it took months to rebuild the antenna.

Hope they bought the extended warranty.

Sorry I didn't see those recent posts. I don't recall any recent issues with ABC 7, but I don't think I tried tuning in last week.

Tonight I was trying to tune into CBS 2.1 (channel 12) and I was getting 30% signal that didn't want to come it. I adjusted the antenna a little bit and got it up to 38%. Out of curiosity I wanted to see if my 2009 Zenith digital antenna tuner received stations any better than the my TV if they had different tuners. What I discovered was that as soon as I connected to coax to the Zenith tuner, my picture immediately came in. I'm getting about 77% and I think my other channels are doing better too. When I turned on the tuner and watch CBS through that (RF modulated to channel 3 on TV) it became choppy again. So this would make me think that I need an attenuator for my coax line. My question is how much do I need to attenuate the signal?

My guess is that the Zenith tuner would be somewhat minimal in the signal drop so I would probably want a 3 dB attenuator. I looked at 3 Star Inc and they have three kinds. They've got a simple one (FAM-3), one that has high return loss (FAM-3HR), and one with high return loss and DC power pass-thru (FAMP-3HR). My UHF antenna is connected to the pre-amp and my VHF antenna joins the coax after the pre-amp. It seems to work pretty well with the Zenith tuner as the last connection before the TV. Would that be where I want to place the attenuator? I assume that the high return loss is better than the plain attenuator since the one with dc passthru includes it too. Any suggestions?
