partsman_ba,

Doesn't your DTVPal have a program guide feature? I have the DTVpal DVR that relies heavily on the guide information. However, since KVAL (CBS) doesn't broadcast TVGOS data the guide only shows for 12 hours ahead, where if they did broadcast it we would see 7 days of programming. Does this bother you? I sent an email to their engineer and all he said is that they don't get enough requests for it and may cost them extra money to do so.

It would be nice if more us contacted them on this to put more pressure on them to broadcast this data.

You're right. I'm just starting to get used to the program guide. As I am using the Pal to front-end a VCR, I have to turn on both and switch my Sammy's input to get the guide. In fact, it appears KVAL isn't broadcasting any PSIP data at the moment - all I'm getting is -No Program Data- on both my Pal and Sammy, even for current programs. Would be nice if they would at least broadcast a few days of PSIP even if they don't want to go to TVGOS. Is Jim Bowen still the engineer? I interviewed with him for a master control position about (oh god) 20 years ago.

I love the digital transition. The voices in my head just say 0 and 1 now.

No, his name is Dan Stoe. Please contact him if you would to express your interest in getting the TVGOS data. If they would, it would work much better than the PSIP data and we would have 7 days of programming info on all channels. I think more people are suffering from the lack of this than they realize but not even people are speaking up. You can contact him here:

http://www.kval.com/about/contact

Or his email is stoe@kval.com

BTW, is anyone getting more than 10 hours of PSIP data currently from ANY Eugene station? My multi-day guide look like a ghost town!

Well, he said that they wouldn't be getting TVGOS - sounds like a management rather than technical decision. On the plus side, I got him to reboot the computer responsible for automatic PSIP updating and to try sending out 7 days of data.

And... 13.2 will eventually be ThisTV rather than a SD simulcast!

I love the digital transition. The voices in my head just say 0 and 1 now.

Only 13.1 seems to be getting beyond 10-12 hours of PSIP data for me, so I'm seeing the same thing you are. This is really bad.

Thanks for contacting them. It would definitely help if more people contacted them to let them know this is a significant problem and lots of people rely and need this guide information from TVGOS. Please more of you contact them. Thanks

I saw in yesterday's FCC updates that a number of translators signed on digitally in Cottage Grove. Anyone seeing these?

Yes, starting Sunday evening (first I noticed). I sent an email to them that night - no response, but data was back last night primetime.

I sent an email to the engineer yesterday and got a response last night that they had a technical problem that they had fixed. He also said he was looking into on extending the length the PSIP goes out which I thought was great news.

What address do you send email to? I've used the one from the website and have never gotten a response.

Funny how Carl at KMTR thinks more PSIP data will degrade their signal while KVAL sends out 4 days and KEZI is open to adding more.

Yeah, it is funny. When you get a chance check out the guide now on KEZI. It looks to be going out 7 days. Pretty nice. I'm definitely not noticing any reductions in picture or sound quality. Are you?

Whoops, forgot to answer your question. I used the address on the website too. I didn't get a reply when I tried to email them before over a month ago, but this time I got a reply. I'm very happy with that station now.

Two things:

Don't you hate the all-caps show titles on KEZI with no show information?

Have you noticed KEZI's signal degraded or lower power now? Having a tough time tuning it in this last week (not just during last night's storm).

I love the digital transition. The voices in my head just say 0 and 1 now.

on the signal i have very good signal from kezi up here in Albany 94% before i lowered my ant. for the storm tonight (looked like it was going to be worse than it was) now kval is lower than it has been(total dropouts) but that will be fixed on june 12th i hope.

I'm not seeing all-caps show titles on KEZI, are you still seeing that?

I have noticed KEZI signal drop in strength, but it seemed to happen for me during the Feb. digital 1st cutoff. It went from low 90's to now 80 for me. All the other 3 big stations I'm 93 or higher.

All caps went away soon after I posted - wonder if they are reading here?

No show info still on KEZI and KMTR - I'm sure the extra bytes would completely screw up their signals.

Traced my KEZI problem to the cable-to-antenna connection so I've got solid signal now. Apparently UHF wasn't impacted as badly.

Don't forget to rescan Friday!

Are the rest of you seeing issues with KVAL's signal this morning after the frequency change? After rescan, I've seen first, no signal, then later badly pixelated .1 and .2, then only .4 with nothing, then no signal again.

And I'm very upset. I went from 90%+ reception strength to not being even able to get it to scan in at all. In reading their dtv statement on their site they said they moved from a UHF channel to a VHF channel. I think my antenna is a UHF only antenna which is fairly common among the HDTV advertised antennas out there. They also state the antenna needs to receive both UHF and VHF. I would guess many people are having problems with this. No other Eugene station is doing this, why is KVAL. Any ideas? Maybe some cost cutting measure? I'm very upset about this.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense because it seems kezi dropped in strength back in February when they made the digital switch. In looking at the specs on my Antenna again, it does receive both UHF and VHF. However on the VHF, it says it pulls in most VHF higher level frequencies within 55 miles. I wonder if KVAL isn't just that much weaker with there VHF signal now vs. kezi Here is what I get in corvallis right now:

7-1 91%
9-1 80%
13-1 0% since it won't scan in now, before Friday it was about 90%
16-1 95%
29-1 80%
31-1 90%

Here is some statements directly from the KVAL web site. On June 12th, they state "KVAL will also change the channel on which we broadcast our digital signal, moving from UHF to VHF channel 13." and they also say "In the Eugene/Springfield area, you will find digital television signals on both the VHF and UHF bands. Your antenna, whether indoor or outdoor, will need to be able to receive both of the bands to enjoy all of the free over-the-air television available."

You have any ideas what may be going on? I can't get KVAL to respond to my emails.

No, definitely not trying to pick up portland at this point. I tried pointing my antenna to the north and couldn't pick up anything except 7.1 stations.
