WLOX-CBS is now in HD on Cable One but for the ones without cable and getting it OTA it is still in 480i SD. I sent them a message via facebook and they told me to rescan my TVs. I did it 4 times still no dice. I want to email their engineering department but I'm quite sure no one is there on the weekends.

WLOX CBS is now up in test mode on DIRECTV. SIGH...

As for it ever being HD OTA I wouldn't be expecting that for a very long time, if ever. Not sure of the exact limits off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure with the way things work now trying to send two HD channels in the current scheme of things would only result in two very crappy HD channels.

Ok after some quick searching each DTV channel is alloted 19 Mbps
A 720p stream (ABC) uses roughly 10-12 Mbps.
A 1080i stream (CBS) uses around 15 Mbps minimum.
Based on that I think you can do the math on the likelyhood of 2 virtual HD channels in one actual channel.

Also some evidence to support this WKRG (CBS) has only ever had one 480i sub-channel. WLOX on the other hand has two 480i sub-channels. 480i uses roughly 4 Mbps.

WKRG has two 480i subchannels - weather radar and MeTV. It's noticeable in their CBS HD feed, it is very blocky.

Also, some stations DO put on two HD feeds and from what I've been told, examples exist of having two 720p channels and one each of 720 and 1080 together… And yes everyone says it looks horrible as expected.

Yep, you're right. I hadn't really looked in a while. I do seem to remember them only having the 24/7 radar sub-channel in the past though. But I could be wrong. Not like it's something I've ever checked on anything approaching a regular basis.

Been studying some of the newer technologies that are now allowing DBS to fit 6 HD channels per transponder. So maybe some of that tech will also allow DTV to squeeze more out their alloted bandwidth some day. I guess it pretty much all boils down to what they're able to spend on upgrading their gear to the latest and greatest thing.

To answer a few questions this morning.. Yes, WLOX is airing ABC in 720p on 13.1 and CBS & Bounce in 480i 4:3 on 13.2 & 13.3 Our CBS channel is available in HD on CableOne channel 457 and DirecTV channel 14. We supply an HD signal to Dish, but they still offer the locals here only in SD. We are on channel 14 on Dish. We are feeding U-Verse an HD signal and they should be up with it in a few weeks.

Evidently it is possible to air two HD program streams. WXXV is airing both FOX and NBC in 720p and it looks surprisingly good.

WLOX does not have the bandwidth to do this since we are also airing Bounce on our .3 channel. I do not see this changing in the foreseeable future.

The "DTV transtion" should have started with ATSC 2.0 instead of the already outdated 1.0 crap it did start with. I guess as always though they gotta keep people buying new TV's and/or tuners every few years. Gotta sell broadcasters new encoders and what not too. If broadcast TV wasn't nearly 20 years behind in technology, or wasn't holding onto 40-50 year old business practices then maybe they wouldn't be at the so called disadvantage they're at nowadays. Be it a real or not.

On a more on topic note at least WXXV-NBC going live OTA hasn't created the braindead debacle at DirecTV that WLOX-CBS did. At least not so far.

Our microwave link to WXXV, where the DirecTV collection point is located, took longer than anticipated. WXXV didn't have that problem since they are located in the same building..

I apologize for the loss of our WLOX-CBS HD signal on DirecTV. I have been in contact with DirecTV and we trying to determine the source of the problem.

[A Dish Network tech got a little carried away while uninstalling some old equipment and disconnected ours as well. We are back up now]

Ok, now why are the Biloxi/Gulfport locals having "technical difficulties" every night this week? (13, 14, 25 and 26)

(not that I expect an answer given your lack of response to the previous question)

Who are you expecting an answer from?

What technical difficulties are the stations suffering from, and is it on DirecTV only or off the air?
