Audyssey thread link testing

While we are talking links, could someone please take a look at the Audyssey thread, from this post onwards:

"Official" Audyssey thread (FAQ in post #51779)

The problem is that the same link is taking people to different posts. For example the link in my sig to the Audyssey FAQ is taking me to the Audyssey FAQ every time, in three different browsers, but it is taking other members to wildly different posts. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Just in case the link above doesn’t take you to the right place, it is post number 71683 in the Official Audyssey Thread. Thanks.

Weird. The links just seem to be taking people to random places.

Another Twist is that is particular thread within the 'Forum Operations' section is not visible to a guest user, meaning one could not test the link above to determine if it is translated differently for Guest users landing on the correct/incorrect location.
FWIW.

34501, Page Top ...Stop

Would you place your initial question in you Test Post, or a new Test post.. I'll log off and test the link and your FAQ sigs.

It takes me to post 71601 - topmost post on last page of the thread.

System: Desktop, Firefox 30.0, Windows 7
Edit: When I did this test, posts per page was set to 100

VerticalScope is aware of a bug where altering your posts per page setting can change where you land on various links.

The link in your sig takes me right to the FAQ. Who else besides Pbarach reported an issue?

I recall having another issue when I changed the posts per page setting. I always make sure it is set to the default now.

I just changed my "posts per page" settings to the default and I still land on the wrong page using Keith's sig link to the Audyssey FAQ. It's a different wrong page though. This time I land on post 21481.

System: Desktop, Firefox 30.0, Windows 7

Then there is something really wrong somewhere. A link is a link - or should be.

This is what the link from my sig to the FAQ should look like

Ignore the curly brackets at the beginning - I had to put those in to stop vB translating the link into English. How can that link take one person to one place and another to another?

What happens if you paste that link (with the curly brackets removed of course) directly into your browser url bar?

With modern sites such as forums, a link does not refer to a static HTML page. Rather, a lookup is performed in a database and the software creates the HTML "on the fly", based on the information retrieved from the database.

It takes me to post 21481 again, same as clicking on the link in your sig.

System: Desktop, Firefox 30.0, Windows 7

OK, I see. Thanks. So the software is broken in some way then? Must be I guess because that exact same link takes me to the FAQ.

Astonishing. So it looks it up in the database and gets a different result when you enter it into your browser from when I enter it in mine?

That does sound like a seriously broken bit of software.

Here's where Keith's FAQ link takes me for various "Posts per page" settings in control panel options. All post numbers refer to the big Audyssey thread.

Default: post 21481
5 per page: post 3581
10 per page: post 7161
20 per page: post 14321
30 per page: post 21481
40 per page: post 28641
50 per page: post 35801
60 per page: post 42961
70 per page: post 50121
80 per page: post 57281
90 per page: post 64441
100 per page: post 71601

All of these results bring me to the top of the page and all are wrong.

System: Desktop, Firefox 30.0, Windows 7

Yes, but it's not just the browser, but also AVS control panel settings. When you select a given number of posts per page in your options, the server-side software must check this when you jump to a forum link, so it can figure out which posts to fetch and display the page with the correct number and range of posts. Apparently something is amiss with this process.

Clearly. What I find mystifying is how it gets it right for me and wrong for another guy. But I admit that I know less than nothing about how computers work.

Thanks Mike. Good call. I assume someone is working on the problem and it will be resolved in the not too distant future. Linking to other posts accurately is a vital function of AVS and it greatly diminishes the ability to help other users if the links take them to the wrong place.

What's puzzling is that I can't get to the right post no matter what "posts per page" setting I use. To me, this says there's something in addition to this setting that's affecting things.

The only reason I'm familiar with this is I was once the admin of a forum that used the Simple Machines Forum software (as used by e.g. AudioCircle). I had to set up the database on the server and all that. Just poking around in the database tables gave some hint as to how the software worked in a general sense.

FYI...I've sent this thread to the VerticalScope techs to investigate further, but no one ever seems to include the important stuff for diagnosis like desktop/mobile, OS, browsers attempted, posts per thread setting, etc.

If you've posted here and want a quicker solution, please edit your posts above and always include these bits in any posts like these.

Thanks

OK. Links are working fine for me. Browsers, latest versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari. OS, Mac OS-X 10.9.3. Posts per thread set to default (30).

Thanks for sending it on to VerticalScope.
