It doesn't need to be connected to UV to enable UHD/HDR movies (think Amazon).

No, it does not participate in Ultraviolet. But it does connect to Disney Movies Anywhere.

I should have asked the question in a better way - my question pertains to being able to connect my ultraviolet account to Google Play Movies so I can watch by ultraviolet movie library using Google Play Movies App.
Thanks for responding.

Vudu is much less than half. Vudu averages under 20Mb/s for their UHD titles. More like 16Mb/s.

What's up with FandangoNow and getting HDR? Do you still need a hard drive and Samsung TV? Or are there other ways?

For the serious hobbyist, discs are going to be the optimal source, at least until internet speeds and bandwidth are able to deliver. 4K UHD and its demanding data requirements have kept disc viable for at least one more generation.

The other question I would have is what type of licensing fees does Dolby ask for or what control over delivery methods does Dolby retain? Maybe Roku was unwilling to play ball on that for whatever reason.

Members have mentioned that some Universal titles stream in HDR10 via FandangoNow. Lucy, Oblivion, Lone Survivor. I redeemed Everest but apparently that movie has a problem with the code and it's only valid for HD not UHD. Vudu refused to upgrade it for me.

Why would there be? It's entirely controlled by your phone or tablet and there is no real interface to control on the chromecast so your device is the remote.

I learned fifteen years ago that I hate touchscreen only remotes when I used a Philips Pronto remote with my HD recordings on my PC(since you always have to look at it to use it). I found the best remote was a combination of hard buttons and a touch screen. I have three of the current Gen Chromecasts, and three of the previous gen Chromecasts. They are my least used streaming devices.

We don't know for sure not being privy to that info, but Dolby Labs has always maintained that DV is a low cost add from both HW and license perspective. Inclusion in a $70 dongle seems to support that.

I know that DV market is exclusive to two TV manufacturers right now, but the market is GENERAL is pretty damn slim. Wanting a device to cover all the bases isn't a very large ask. My main point is that I already have a Nvidia Shield, that hardware is 18 months old at this point, and Roku just released brand new devices that don't push the envelop at all. That's disappointing from a company that used to be the market leader.

When I first redeemed Lucy it was in HDR but no longer. It has reverted back to a 4K SDR version. No idea about the other titles, but I think someone said that it was all of them.

It's not the fees so much as the control Dolby may demand. Weren't there some rumors about how Dolby requested access to the entire capabilities of a TV in order for DV to be licensed on that TV? Even stuff that may be proprietary tech that they don't really want out there?

I'm not making excuses, just trying to think of reasons it's not included much like it isn't included on Sony or Samsung TVs.

When I checked FandangoNow yesterday for the HDR titles using the new Roku Ultra, they were streaming at HDR. Haven't checked today though?

I've ragged on Amazon for their poor grading and unimpressive HDR before in this thread, but 4 episodes in to Goliath and I'm blown away.

Not only are the characters and the story great. But the cinematography and color grading is outstanding. There is ample and brave use of HDR. The WCG is really being employed here in the best way I've seen so far. Dinky LA bars with deep color neon lights. The candle lit cathedral. The 10bits are doing their job preventing banding even in challenging scenes, like time lapsed gradient skies.

The black limousine mercedes with red LED tail lights in the parking basement at the start of episode 4 looks just awesome thanks to HDR.

Compared to this, it becomes obvious and almost embarrasing how much other productions have fumbled and stumbled to make use of this new technology.

FYI for anyone who doesn't want to spend $40 on the Best Buy BOGO half off deal, Frys electronics has BvS and Star Trek Into Darkness for $20 each if you sign up for their e-mail deals. Just another option in case someone really only wants one of those movies and doesn't want to commit $40 to get it and another title they may not be thrilled about.

No, it seems like these titles are exclusive to the FandangoNow Vidity downloadable movies only in HDR.

Just finished the 3D version of the new Ghost Busters - Fantastic

The end of the movie during the credits is also blown out elevated blacks just like the UHD version. FYI

At least we can't blame this one on the new format.
