I don't get this with any other HDR content, so I'm presuming that this was a conscious (if stupid) decision by the programme makers, so I'm kind of hoping other people are getting this as well!
ive never seen or heard of silver bars like this. must be an issue with your tv. you might wanna try a smart apps reset or even a factory reset afterwards.

Anyone using Chromecast Ultra? I just got one to try out Youtube HDR, but so far I'm very dissapointed...

  • I cant get it to stream in full resolution in Netflix/Youtube/etc., despite having 200 megabit fiber and high quality router less than a meter from the Chromecast. My TV which also connects through wifi always gets a good stream.
  • The Youtube HDR playlist refused to play, it would play 5 seconds and then kick me out of the stream by forced forwarding.
  • The UI and screensaver is not running 4K
  • Casting photos from the Google Photos app looks to be less than 4K too
  • The screensavers has text in the same location, while photos change in the background. It gets me a bit worried for burn-in. I mean a screensaver should never be constant in any way... That's screensaver 101, Google.
  • Playing a Netflix show available in Dolby Vision played back in HDR10... how stupid is that when the device DOES support Dolby Vision
  • The lack of a remote and user interface gets annoying.
  • So overall, a very non-Ultra experience.

Dolby Vision is not yet available on the Ultra but will be in a future update. I've tried You Tube HDR videos and they have worked fine providing HDR-10.

Okay that explains it.

Any luck getting 4K photos or screensavers on it?

Are you using it wired through ethernet?

Not sure if its been posted but just incase.

I have a reservation for next Monday to see the new Star Wars movie for my kids birthday. It is at the new Dolby Theater in Orlando. I searched it and the new movie is Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Hopefully that makes it easy to release it for this way for home?

I've been waiting for ever for this theater to open the Dolby room and I've been once so far and it just happened to be the new be the new Ben Afflack movie which was horrible image wise. I was so let down. Dark, grainy, not sharp.... Blah I'm thinking the UHD disc of this will also stink.

Anyways, hopefully Star wars will rock in there. I will post after i see it

Notice Vudu added to my library Divergent in DV HDR, it's a Summit company production which is under Liongate. Wondering if they will be adding more Liongate 4k films to their library as I own a few more. Anyone else see this. Played part of the movie and it plays in DV HDR on my P75.

Hey Ray,

When you view new uhd blurays, can you give us a little detail on where you found good differences between the 1080p version vs the 2160p hdr version?

So, the reason i ask this is because i first watched The Secret Life of Pets in UHD/DV via vudu. Last night, i started to watch it in 1080p and i didn't feel like there was a big difference with color range. I kinda want to know some good parts of movies where i can find notable differences between hdr and nonhdr parts of a movie.

I know i can kinda switch back and forth and wait for the buffer, but even then i get disconnected with the comparison.

Or maybe, do you or anyone has any good suggestions to compare non hdr to hdr content?

Yes, one of the main reasons I ordered it (4K DI); sadly, swamped with work (and trying to order the 203, which I was finally able to do ), so haven't had a chance to check it out yet (so much for getting it pre-release). I'll update once I'm able to check it out

No but the double dip is obvious. Actually at this point it would be a triple dip if you factor in 3D.

I'm 1/4 thru and it's pretty good quality.

Finished the movie. It was OK. Quality was good. Some better than other scenes. Nothing bad at all, just not super consistent. But on the better end of the scale. FYI

Just watched Suicide squad...movie was ok, i expected more but I knew the critics reaction to it...oh well...the picture was mostly good, but one or two scenes weren't as dark as they should have been like the opening in the restaurant...kinda milky dark grey. just a few scenes so not as bad as the problems with Batman V superman, but it also didn't have the wow factor of the best scenes in batman v Superman( car chase on the docks and the ending fight) Still looked good though, and the HDR really made the lights and lightning pop..the blu ray can't hold a candle to the 4k...its dull and flat, especially the ending. I wish it had more of the color throughout the entire film that was in the closing credits, but I guess they wanted a darker film, and aside from a few milky dark scenes, the black levels are great....Glad i bought it overall, but its not the reference quality of the Shallows or imo X Men Apocalypse....Linking flixter and ultarviolet and vudu, and redeeming through flixter it shows up in 4k on vudu if anyones wondering..Same thing with jason Bourne and Secret life of Pets

Not surprising about BvS. The end fight with doomsday I believe everything was filmed with 65mm IMAX cameras with a 4k scan and the movie had a 4k DI so that's some top notch PQ for those end battles (35mm scenes only scanned at 2k).

I've also seen other complaints and screenshots of the suicide square blu ray having raised blacks and a pretty milky look to it. Got my SS 4k today but playing with the oppo 203 tonight before I dive into full movies.

Speaking of raised blacks, my new oppo 4k 204 brings a question.

The oppo has an amazing info bar that shows all the disc info, including the max and minimum nits the disc is graded for.
I'm watching Ghostbusters 4k, and I've seen alot of people mention raised blacks throughout the movie. The info bar shows this movie has a minimum luminance of .005 nits. Curious if this is why we see raised blacks, the movie wasn't graded for perfect 0 nits.

I have the samsung k8500 and the oppo 203 hooked up at the same time. I have 2 copies of Batman Vs Superman and and am flipping back and forth between inputs on my Denon with paused scenes.

The samsung is way darker than the oppo! The samsung appears to be crushing the picture. Both players are at default settings.

your TV can't display that low, when taking pre-calibration readings my Samsung 4K LED will totally turn everything off when presented with a 100% black screen and the meter will still measure 0.097 cmd2 due to the slightest bit of ambient lighting.
The raised blacks seem to be how a TV's 'Private' HDR settings interpret certain metadata information in HDR10, if the metadata was graded to make highlights pop, on a studio monitor they may not have realized that has ruined the black level.
HDR.. what a mess.
P.S Is the Oppo all you expected? Pre-Ordered mine in the UK ages ago now and as of yet we haven't had any units

I also watched it last night. Had about the same feelings. A few times the scenes were so different image quality wise I thought my kid was going to ask me about it. Like the same scene and there are 2 camera angles. One is great blacks and then it flips to the other that has milky blacks and then back. I'm still amazed these movies get put out this way. Does no one ever review these for quality and consistency? Or is the attitude.......only a hand full of geeks would even notice so why bother..... I laugh when i say this. Its kind of like HBO not giving a turd about image quality because most of their peeps are watching it on an iPhone.

Fun movie otherwise

Aha, well in that case please could you try to 'tweak' the picture settings of the Samsung to make them match the Oppo, and then post what the settings are? TIA!

Ray -- First, thanks for the link to this thread that you posted in the Oppo UDP-203 Owners Thread. Although I entered the 4K HDR world last summer, this thread had somehow eluded me until I saw the link you posted. Thanks again!

I bought the BD quality version of Batman v. Superman from the Kaleidescape Movie Store and downloaded it to my Kscape Strato. Alas, Kscape does not have the rights to sell the 4K HDR version but I bought the film anyway because of its Atmos audio and am glad I did. Its Atmos audio track is demonstration quality and its 1080P video upconverted to 4K by my Sony 75XBR X940D 4K HDR TV looks terrific. I'm sorry that I am missing out on the 4K HDR version, though.

My Oppo 203 should be here next week so I have to decide which 4K HDR films to buy first. My choices are limited, though, because In addition to Batman v. Supermen, I have bought a bunch of BD quality films from the Kscape store in order to get the benefit of their Atmos soundtracks. I don't want to double dip right now because I haven't given up on Kscape being able to cut deals with the studios that will allow them access to the 4K HDR versions of their new releases. This thread will be a great help to me.

HT setup: Sony 75XBR X940D UHD HDR TV; Kaleidescape Strato Movie Server 6 TB; Yamaha RX-A3060 AV receiver; Sonamp 2-1 2channel 100W power amp; Crestron Control System; 2 Rythmik FV18 subwoofers, 6 Hsu HB-1 Bookshelf speakers, 1 Hsu HC-1 Center speaker, 4 Focal ICW8 in-ceiling Atmos speakers; Oppo UDP-203 4K HDR BD player; Mac Mini HTPC. TiVO Bolt 1TB DVR; TiVo Premiere Elite 2 TB DVR; Roku Premiere+

Are any streaming services available that allow you to rent the Revenant in 4K HDR? I can't find it anywhere.

You can reserve seat numbers online..... FYI
Are all the seats in the Dolby auditoriam at Altomonte recliners? I went online where you can reserve your seat but they did not indicate if they were recliners or not.
