Awesome thread. I am on the west side so not make it over too often to events on the east side.

BTW: if anyone is over in GR and wants a JBL Synthesis Dolby Atmos theater demo, Classic Stereo built a kickass one in their store: http://classicstereo.us/experience/

Well things are happening in my theater. I sold my old projector and LCR's last week. I hung my new 5040ub and started tinkering with this thing. Looks great so far, aside from the mega dust blob dead center of the image. So this brand new projector has to be swapped. Oh well. It happens. I sold my oppo 103d in favor of an oppo 203uhd. And I ordered my titan 615lx LCR's. Exciting times. Looking forward to hosting the local g2g group soon.

I dont think there is any hardware issues. There have been several firmware updates to fix things. I have one coming to compare to the Samsung K8500. I was happy with the Samsung until I read about the "red smearing" issue and now I see it all the time..........

When it rains it pours, huh? You've been busy. My projector and LCR are gone as well. Hoping to sell my Marantz too. Hopefully it won't be long before we have these Titans cranking.

Yeah, like Brian said, it's just been firmware upgrades. It should prompt you to upgrade right when you turn it on. I'm trying to figure out if my cable has problems. I went through the JVC RS400 and Oppo 203 threads to try and push HDR 4:4:4 60. After changing the settings, it seems like it ran through my cable, but I've still got to tinker with it. The picture looks good.

What do you think about the new Sony UHD BluRay player? It's supposed to be released at $299. I wonder if the OPPO is $250 better than the Sony.

I just saw that. You also get two free UHD titles. I think Im going to return the Sammy and the Oppo and wait for the Sony honestly.

Yeah, I thought of returning the 203 once I read about the UBP-X800. It appears to have some similarities to the Oppo, including:
  • universal disc playback (which Samsung, Panny and LG 4K players appear to not have);
  • dual HDMI outputs (for video and audio, in the event your AVR isn't 2.2hdcp compatible);
  • high res certification; and
  • dual band high speed Wifi.

It's also supposed to have 4K streaming apps, which the Oppo doesn't have. I have an Ultra Roku, which streams 4K HDR, so that's not a big concern to me. The Sony isn't supposed to include analog outputs. Some care about that, others not so much. It's not entirely clear whether the Sony will be able to strip metadata like the Oppo so that you can remove the HDR from an HDR signal, but still send SDR BT2020. It's important to note that it's being reported that the Sony will not have Dolby Vision. The Oppo will be upgraded to DV later this year.

From what I have read, the Sony will convert HDR to SDR. I'm not worried about that as projectors have a ways to go before HDR or DV work well on them.

Where did you read about it not being region code locked?.

Linky for specs and features http://www.sony.com/electronics/blu-...ayers/ubp-x800

The pic above of the back panel displays:

Bluray Region code A

DVD Region code 1

It would be nice if it was a region code free player. But based on the specs and photos once they ship will know. I believe the oppo 203 is /can be with firmware update to be a region free player.

I'm still l@@king at getting the Sony once the price drops below 200.

Here's the link for the specs and features: http://www.sony.com/electronics/blu-...specifications. If you scroll down to the "Play anything" section in the link you sent or the "Playback Capability" section in the link I provided, it discusses the various formats the UBP-X800 can play. Universal disc playback refers to the player having the ability to playback nearly all available disc formats, including 4K HDR, UHD and HD Blu-Ray discs; DVD-Audio and SACD (high res audio) format discs; and DVD-Video and audio CD playback. You're referring to region codes, which is simply a form of DRM. The Sonya and the Oppo are both region locked. However, there are some 3rd-party region free mods for the Oppo 203, but it is still has universal disc playback even though it's region locked.

Understand now, thank you for clarifing. You were referring to disc format not region codes.

The Official Michigan Home Theater Meeting Thread

Unboxing my new receiver today. Anyone have a bluray atmos demo disc? My friend got a UHD DTS:X at CES, but I don't have a way to play it.

I could try and steal his DTS:X demo disc for the next meet up since he has no use for it.

Vudu has a FREE Dolby Atmos digital bundle with 4 Atmos demos.

Search for Atmos Experience.

What AVR did you get?

Thanks Wolf! I have vudu on my roku stick and for netflix and other stuff i thought it only did DD+. Looks like the stick won't do lossless audio, but it still sounded good.

I got a Yamaha A-3050.

Still figuring out all these new features and options, right now there's some HDMI handshake issues with my Panny VT60, but the zone 2 TV is working perfectly.

Your welcome.

With nearly 300 titles available with Atmos you will many options available.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search...&action=search

HDMI handshake issues can be VERY frustrating. Thats a nice Yamaha AVR, loaded with features. Once you get all the bugs worked out. I'm confident you will enjoy your Yamaha AVR in experiencing Dolby Atmos. I'm amazed with every movie I experience with Dolby Atmos, DTS X, Dolby Surround and Neural X.

On another note, does anyone have a pair of bookshelf speakers they're not using?

I'm not trying to spend too much to add a new office "zone"

So... I had planned on not even opening the Oppo and just sending it back and waiting for the Sony....I opened the Oppo and now it ain't going back lol. DOH!

I didn't expect it to be better than the Samsung but it is especially with regular HD blurays.

So... I had planned on not even opening the Oppo and just sending it back and waiting for the Sony....I opened the Oppo and now it ain't going back lol. DOH!

I didn't expect it to be better than the Samsung but it is especially with regular HD blurays.

Yeah. I'm keeping my Oppo too. It looks really good with my regular blurays. I'm also really digging the combo with the RS400. I've got 4 UHD blurays and I'm going to have to compare John Wick UHD vs regular bluray.

For the price I can't complain. We have a ton of movies for the kids on google play, so it's really nice for that. I ended up picking up two more Roku Premiere+ for our other TVs. The 4K HDR works fine for me too. The picture looks great on both my Samsung 4k HDR set and my JVC. They've gone on sale for $30-$40 off sometimes as well.
