Central IA Star Wars get together

I was thinking with the new Star Wars movie coming out this December that it'd be fun to re-watch the series (no to episodes I, II, and III) .

8/26/17 - Rogue One, host: draden1
9/16/17 - A New Hope, host: thrillcat
10/7/17 - Empire, host: dlbeck (7) Altoona****FULL**** / guests: thrillcat, edge928, theblackangus, draden1, Zltful, rowan611, Jeahrens, bar seat - desertdome
11/4/17 1:30 - Jedi, host: jeahrens (5) Ankeny****FULL**** / guests: thrillcat, edge928, dlbeck, theblackangus, rowan611
12/9/17 - Awakens, host: joshp14 (5, 2) West Des Moines / guests: draden1, Jeahrens, edge928, dlbeck, thrillcat, theblackangus

Hosts: Please post what movie/date/time and seating availability (including overflow) you have. I will keep this post updated with the dates/times and attendees for each movie as interest comes and goes.

Attendees: Open to anyone in the area, please post what movie(s) you'd like to attend and I'll keep this post updated. With dates being so far out we know this list will fluctuate.

Looking forward to it, should be a lot of fun!

I've always had a soft spot for Jedi. So I can take that one. I have seating for 5. Shall we say 11-4-17? Evening or afternoon work better?

Excellent! It's your call on date/time, people can work around what you pick.

I would host A New Hope on September 16th. I have 9-10 seats, minus 2 for my son and I. So, 7 available, or 8 if we put 4 on the couch, which can easily be done. Since I'm in Ames, we could do late afternoon if everyone wants, or I'd also be fine with evening.

As for attending, count me in for Jedi, and if @dlbeck hosts Empire I'll want to be there, too, as long as it works in the ISU football schedule.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable.

Hmmm...I could to Force Awakens...

I only have seating for 5 (6 but minus 1 for me...my wife hates Star Wars lol)

2 folks would be relegated to the Sumo Loungers as my theater isn't done yet so we would have to slum it in the LR theater.

Date in December is pretty flexible.

I keep confusing my intentions with my abilities.

Thanks for the offer but I'm holding out hope for one of the newer theaters in the area to join in. Your living room setup is awesome and your theater (when finished) will be amazing! You'll get your own standalone event and will have to host a couple of open houses when it's done .

@jeahrens is 5 firm or would you be ok with a folding chair or two if there is enough interest?

5 is fairly firm (I'll be standing in the back). The love seat can take one more body, but it's not going to be a good experience for that person. So technically you could get 6 if someone doesn't care about watching at a bad angle right next to the sub. I don't think you could fit folding chairs behind the seating and in front wouldn't work. If I can think of a way to squeeze in more, I'll post here.

On the good news front, I will be screening an HD de-specialized version of the film. So no additional puppet junk and no Vader emo moment.

That's cool, I've read about that. Did you get it from someone online? I don't think they are retail, the de-specialized versions I mean.

I got it online. I also have a de-specialized edition of SW IV if interested. I also have the Silver Screen edition of SW IV which is an HD copy of an original '77 print. So it is EXACTLY what was seen in the theaters back in the day. From AV presentation standpoint the de-specialized edition of ep IV is probably the best compromise. The Silver Screen edition has a lot of grain and the sound isn't going to wow you. The Blu Ray changes on Empire aren't intrusive enough to make me seek out a copy of the film with the changes removed.

I own several legal copies of these films. The altered version are not distributed for profit and thus fall under fair use.

^ That's awesome you're going to show the de-specialized version of Jedi, that added musical number is pretty awful. It has different music and it's pretty long if I remember right, so getting rid of it is a welcome sight.

Sounds like the Harmy versions? I have those as well. Draden messaged me to host since I'm one of the new guys. As I just replied to him, I can host but would really prefer any month later than Sept. I'm finalizing the smaller things like acoustic treatments, popcorn machine and general A/V calibration. It will also give me the chance to meet everyone (I've met dlbeck).

I have normal seating for 6 butts however I can add at least 2 folding chairs with unobstructed views (audio will be meh) and possibly a third (need to measure). Brief specs are below.

Speakers (7.1): Elac UF5 R/L, Elac UC5 center, Elac IW-D61-W x4 surrounds
Projector: Epson 5040UB
Sub: Outlaw Ultra X-12
Screen: DIY AT milliskin spandex 116"
Xbox One S, PS3/PS4

Audio: Denon X3300W / Outlaw 7140
Speakers: Elac Unifi UF5 x2, UC5 / Elac Debut IW-D61-W x4 / Outlaw Ultra-X12
Video: Epson 5040 / 116" 16:9 DIY Spandex

That sounds like a plan, hopefully between @joshp14 , @jeahrens , and @dlbeck someone would be willing to trade one of the later months with you. I'm curious to hear the uni-fi's and to see the 5040.

Yes, 2 of the 3 I mentioned are the Harmy versions (IV and VI de-specialized). The Silver Screen edition of IV is a different animal. It's an actual theatrical print of SW '77 that was scanned. It's 100% what was in the theater in '77, but the grain and audio make the Harmy version a better choice to "wow" folks. Still nothing will scratch the nostalgia itch like the Silver Screen edition.

Looking forward to checking out your setup

I have some pretty bad flutter echo to get under control. I'd be embarrassed to show a movie to you guys until I get some panels up

So just thought I would update things. We're going to shoot for a 1:30 start time. We'll have some finger food and a desserts to snack on. I'm also thinking of picking up some prizes from the local comic shop and doing a little Star Wars trivia game to determine the winners.

Put me down to attend the shows. I will bow out of Ep V at DLBeck's if we have more interest than seats since I've already had the privilege of seeing films in his theater (and new folks that haven't should get to experience it). Drew are you gonna step up for Rogue One? Bueller? Bueller?

I'm still available to host as long as I can take Empire/Jedi/Awakens. If not I can always host "The Star Wars Holiday Special" As jeahrens mentions, I have the fan-made de-specialized versions of 4, 5 and 6 along with the normal blu-ray for 7. Fox and Disney need to stop sand-bagging and release the 4K versions already. By the time that happens 8K will be the new norm. I will attend as many showings as room allows to meet everyone. Breaking in the new Paragon popcorn machine. Who knew we had the best popcorn-machine maker right here in central Iowa?

Nice idea, should be a good time. As for hosting Rogue One, I will happily do it if we don't hear from any of the new folks. I'm going to wait a couple more weeks before putting a date down for it.

Draden - I'll certainly try to make it to all the movies. Let's tentatively schedule Empire for 10/14/17.

Rogue One will be at my place on 8/26 at 7:00. People are welcome to show up anywhere between 6:00-7:00 and we can demo stuff, play arcade games, listen to music, or just hang out. People are welcome to stay after the movie and play around as well.

I have spacious seating for 6 but can easily do 7 (3 seats in front row plus 4 seat couch in back row). I also have two bar stools off to the side (emergency use) if need be. We'll have to see how much interest there is?

I only have seating for 4 (minus 1 for myself). Could pretty easily do 5/6 by adding two folding chairs where there is normally a walking path. Actually could possibly even do 2 more on other side of recliners where coffee tables are. Would be happy to throw my name in the hat if other have interest. Not sure where we stand with all the dates and movies confirmed, but I would be happy to do Phantom Menace, Rogue One, or Force Awakens. Have a very basic setup, as this is first time around. Equipment list is a bit dated, but currently running:

Onkyo 929
Epson 3500
Klipsch RSW 15
RBH 831
RBH 1212
Behringer 6000
QSC 850?
Roku
Xbox One
PC
Behringer x3400 crossover
Soon to be adding RBH surrounds and center as I just sold Klipsch.

Marantz SR5009, Onkyo 929, Behringer inuke 6000, (2) QSC RMX 850, RBH custom speaker bar, RBH 1212, RBH 831, RBH 821C, Epson 3500, 120' vapex screen, Klipsch RSW-15 subwoofer, Roku, PC, Xbox1, Paradigm Monitor v2, Behringer 3400 crossover

I think we're good with hosts for the 5 movies but don't hesitate to post what movies/spaces you'd like to see and I'll add you to the master list in post 1. It definitely seems like there's a DSM crawl in the near future, lots of newer folks posting and finishing rooms.....maybe this Winter/Spring?

Put me down as a guest for The Force Awakens, too. I think I can make that work.

I may have the XMC-1 by the New Hope viewing, so I would imagine it will sound different for those who've already heard my room.....

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable.

Done. As for the XMC, I'll be curious if you notice an improvement using Dirac as opposed to the PEQ in the UMC? I spoke with @deewan before purchasing and he mentioned that he was impressed with Dirac as well. I'm happy for you, that's exciting!

My personal opinion with the UMC and XMC is that there was a noticeable sound difference between the UMC and the XMC when comparing them with no room correction. I used the PEQ on the UMC to tame a few minor issues with my room and found the results to be positive, but not earth shattering. Once I got the XMC-1 and upgraded to Dirac Live and a calibrated mic, it was the best my room ever sounded for multi-channel soundtracks. I actually preferred Dirac turned off for 2-channel as I felt Dirac created to large of a sound stage that blended to much across the front of the room. I like hearing more localized sounds across the front stage, but still outside of in between the speakers (I hope that makes sense).
