Kind of short notice, but tomorrow, Sanjay and Ray are coming to my place to have a listen to my speakers.

But afterwards I have set up a visit to the local HT shop to sample the Ruby and Pearl. Ray is bringing his HD-DVD source and some discs.

If you are interested, send me a PM.

Just wanted to thank Curtis for the hospitality. Fun spending time at your place as well as doing the Ruby vs Pearl comparison at the shop. Too bad we had to break up the lunch conversation.

Of course you're welcome. The group is informal, and our prime interest is just in getting together to enjoy this hobby. Nothing more complicated than that.

No projector Sanjay,
I got:
Sony LCD E55A20 last X-mas.
Rocket 850,200,300 & UFW12 last month
OPPO981 last week

Onix Ref .5 is on the way
Soon to buy Harmony 880 and Paramax 5100EX and Buttkickers in the future.

I am still unsure of which Receiver to get between Cam Audio 640R or Denon 3806.
* 3806 is still around 1K retail (too much for my budget) and $800 online (too much risk)
* I could order the CA for a nice price but I have not listen to it myself even though I heard lots of good things about it from others. I love the sound of Denon, 3806 in particular or higher models.

Please help me to clear my head.
Thx!
Kev.

Kev,

Maybe I'm not understanding: if the Denon 3806 is something you cannot buy for at least a couple of reasons (i.e., it's outside your budget AND too much of a risk ordering online), then why is it one of your two choices? I mean, you can't get it anyway, right?

Personally, I would consider the next Denon model down: AVR-2807. It has almost all of the features of the 3806 but for a couple hundred dollars less. Compared to the CA, it has 7.1-channel processing, HDMI connectivity and one of the best room correction systems available. The latter is important because more than 50% of what you hear is the room, and not direct sound from your speakers. Cutting down on the room's unwanted contributions will help you hear more of what your speakers actually sound like and more of what's in the source material.

The CA 540 has no way of addressing room problems, is limited to 6.1 channels, has poor connectivity by today's standards, etc. Of course the last refuge for fans of any piece of gear lacking in features is for them to claim superior sound quality. But that's subjective and can be said of any piece of gear: "It sounds better to me." Yeah well chocolate ice cream can taste better to me than plain old vanilla, but that doesn't mean that chocolate is objectively better tasting than vanilla. The next person doing the taste comparison could subjectively feel the opposite if he's not a chocolate lover.

You said that you'd heard "lots of good things" about the CA 540. Let me guess; all those good things amount to the exact same thing: it sounds better (to whoever was posting those comments) than the competition. But unless you actually hear them side by side, you won't know which sounds better to you. Folks will tell you that the Denon only has bells and whistles, but what they don't understand is that each of those features is there to improve the sound you hear.

So, my first choice would be the 3806, but since that's out of the question, I would get the 2807.

All of what Sanjay posted above is true.Facts, like he has stated, are very important to keep in mind when making an informed consumer purchase.Buying equipment that is as future proof as possible and includes all the features you want leads to a satisfied consumer.

Also keep in mind the "you" factor. While vanillla ice cream may be as good as chocolate,if "you" dont like vanilla, why purchase something you wont eat.

Certains brands of audio gear or a certain look, may be what "floats your boat".Blue lights,or read outs on audio gear sets my eyes to twirling(I love it). You may like piano black or wood grain on speakers.
Making a wise consumer purchase based on features and your own tastes, will lead you to a piece of equipment that stays in your system much longer.

I just got back from Tweeter and here is what I found:

Denon 3806 is still hold the price around $900 and the 2807 is only $50 less. IMO, it is crazy that they still hold them with such high price.

They have a 3805 (Customer return) that been sitting there for a couple months now for $500. Please let me know if the 3805 would do well with my speakers and sub.
Thanks guys!!!

Kev,

The 3805 doesn't have HDMI and Audyssey room correction, like the 3806 and 2807 do. If it turns out you can't find the 2807 at a price within your budget, then you may want to consider one of the newer Onkyo models (604 or 674).

tigerkn,
From what I have seen the Cam audio unit will retail for $1399....so how it this in your price range and the Denon 2807 retail $1099 not?
I would say...decide how much you have to spend on a unit, and buy the best unit for your money and use. Sanjay gives great advice, I would listen.

Which brings up a good point: Kevin, what is your budget?

P.S. Ray, you have to update the link in your signature (you have the wrong pre-pro listed).

I put in 10% deposit to hold the $500 Denon 3805 (customer return) at Tweeter (for price drop purpose since it's a discontinued model) on Saturday.
I plan to do the same with the $900 Denon 3806 (displace model) for the same purpose.

I could order the Cambridge 640R for about $700 as friend & family price which I cann't return (unless there is problem with it) or sale it until after one year, the bigger headache is I never get to listen to the CA to know how it sounds.

I like the sound from Denon a whole lot, especially 3806 and 2807 (both around $900 or more) I DO NOT think I could pass the Audyssey MultEqxt Room Eq . I might have to hang around for a while until it drop to the $700 range..

I am pushing my pocket for $700 max.

I am going to get my money back from the 3805 unless it is going to be $400 a month from now.

You guys are awesome. Hope to hang out with you guys sometime at one of the GTG to say thanks in person.

Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can wait till after CES (early January), then the announcement of new receivers could cause current models to drop. After Christmas might be a better time to get something like the 2807.

BTW, I have nothing against the CA stuff; I just don't see what it offers for the money. Even the HDMI connections on the 640R are for switching only, no input of audio.

I just swap the deposit for the 3805 to hold the 3806, it is now $888 + tax.
Hopefully the price will drop,,,,,,,,,

May be we can get together at the event, always fun to hang out with fellow LA Area AVSers.
