I went to Ant Man with my 16 year old daughter up at the "Ultrascreen" in Waterloo (nice 50 minute drive). I was excited to try out their setup, but boy was I disappointed. Yes, the screen is decently big, but it wasn't "holy cow that is huge". The audio was OK. No bleeding ears like Draden1 had, and there was bass, but it seemed like it was just 5.1 as I get better surround effects at home with a 7.1 setup. But the worst part was the screen image itself. They boast "Ultrascreen" and it was a 4K projection setup which had the obligatory "concessions stand" animation is super crisp form, but the image was horribly (REALLY BADLY) washed out. There were no blacks to the image. Heck, there wasn't even "dark grey." It was really disappointing for a place the is bragging about their screen to have it be that bad. Not only didn't it have any black to the image, it also wasn't very bright, especially for showing 3D flicks. So there was no "pop" to the image either as it was dim and yet lacked a good black level.

My daughter is now wanting to go see Mission Impossible this weekend, but the best that we have here is Wehrenberg, and it is very "hit or miss" depending on which actual theater they put you in to. That is why I love checking out other theaters when traveling for work. I have some really amazing ones under my belt (Like Cinemark's theater in West Plano, TX. It shares the parking lot with their corporate offices and their XD theater there is TOP notch.)

So, I am traveling in a week to Atlanta and Little Rock. I have a couple of pretty good choices there to see it instead. She will have to wait until we get it to watch at home.

Last action type movie I saw in theaters was Interstellar. Saw it at Jordan Creek in xD. I thought they did a pretty good job. The audio track in that movie has some crazy bass and the theater produced them quiet well I thought.

I went and saw Entourage at flix in Merle Hay because I love beer. The screen was really disappointing, the audio was just adequate, but it was a fun experience and time (kind of a date night with the wife with no kids). They had pretty decent food and their brewery puts out decent beer.

The last remaining theater in Ames has been pretty dreadful. I read the manager the riot act a couple years ago - spitballs on the screen (the same ones for weeks), squeaky chairs, some chairs not even connected to the floor anymore, annoying audience members not being dealt with, slow concessions, the list goes on. I didn't go for quite awhile, then decided to give it another shot for Avengers...and have since been back for Mad Max, Ted 2, Terminator and Trainwreck.

They've done quite a bit of work since I had last been. All new seats in each house, spaced with more legroom. All new Barco projectors. New screens. Not sure about the sound systems, but they've always sounded pretty decent, and not exceedingly loud.

The thing I found most interesting, though, is that they put up 16x9 screens in every house, with no masking systems in place. So there's black bars for most films. I guess I'm hoping they are still coming...

But the new projectors look great, and the screens aren't trashed. Hopefully they can keep it that way. I didn't notice any annoying patrons, but it's also summer and the college students are mostly gone.

Concessions are still molasses.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable.

Altoona is putting in a new theater, I heard rumor that it would have the latest technology, and if so, does that mean it will have Atmos sound. does any one have the scoop on this?

I heard the same...Des Moines Register had this to say...

A 10-screen movie theater is headed to Altoona.

Cinemark Holdings of Plano, Texas, said Wednesday it plans to build an all-digital movie theater that will feature luxury reclining chairs and enhanced surround sound on Adventureland Drive across from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

The theater is expected to open in the fall of 2015.

The theater will have electric-powered recliners with foot rests and cup holders and wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screens in the 10 auditoriums. Five of the screens will have what Cinemark called immersive 3D capability.

Nice, I hope it has Atmos as this would be the first theater in Des Moines to get it.....to my knowledge.

As stated in my last post, Cinemark is my current favorite theater chain for quality image and sound. The seats will just be a bonus. Too bad I no longer live in Pleasant Hill. The 5 minute drive would have been sweet.

FYI, I heard that Copper Creek has Atmos... I have not verified this myself though.

I live in Altoona and am from Pleasant Hill. The Copper Creek Cinemas did receive an upgrade they have one Atmos and 4K Theater. The one other theater than this in Des Moines is the BrewHouse Flix.

Travis (Thrillcat) and I went to Mission Impossible at the Brewhouse Flix last night, in an "MX" room. While the audio was a tad hot, it's the best audio I've heard in an Iowa theater. I couldn't tell if the mix was Atmos or not. We were about 3/4 back and our seats had heavy ambient channels and room acoustics. The image was ok. It's my new destination-theater in state.

If the brew house is the place at Merle Hay I called them and they only had 1 Atmos theater from what the guy on the phone said, and sadly MadMax didnt play in the Atmos theater.

Only thing better than Davids theater are the old River Hills. =)

That is until he figures out how to fit a 200' screen downstairs!

Well when the Merle Hay Cinema had a projectionist paying attention (sometimes they didn't always get things in focus) I would say it was right up there. Haven't checked out Flix, but if it follows the Alamo Drafthouse it's probably a CIW setup which is very disappointing in a "premium" theater.

So I don't want to jinx anything but as of right now, any host visit to my place is on indefinite hold.

Sufficed to say, if things work out the way we hope, this time next year will be a whole different animal for me to show off...

Sorry to be so cryptic but I have this phobia of saying things before they are finalized and jinxing them but I have been antsy to say SOMETHING. Hehe.

Keep your fingers crossed folks!

Fine...the ball is rolling now so the momentum will be hard to stop.
After finally finishing up all of our remodeling projects this past weekend, we will be putting our place on the market this Thursday.

That is because we found a place we both absolutely love and put an offer in on it.
It is another townhouse but this one is a duplex with 1700+sf finished on the main level with a 1760sq unfinished basement that is stubbed in for another bathroom already.
The true bonus/kicker is the basement has 9ft+ ceilings with no potential bulkheads on the side of the basement where I will be doing the theater.
Essentially, all finished out, we are looking at around 3200sf with a 3 car garage and a pond in our back yard. With a theater and very likely my very own dedicated 2 channel room too.

The realtor has already **** a brick checking out how different our place is now to the other units she has sold in this development and even suggested we ask $10k more than the average which is good for us (we are OK with walking away from this place not owing anything and have more than 20% to put down on the new place with money left over to begin the finish out of the basement).

Anyway, things are sort of going crazy around here...spent the entire weekend filling up a 10x10 storage unit from floor to ceiling. We have one last trip to storage to make and then we work on cleaning this place as spotless as we can possibly make it.
Hoping that we sell as quickly as most go around here so that we don't have to risk carrying 2 mortgages for any amount of time.

ZLTFUL CONGRATS! Exciting times are ahead for you. I experienced your system on the last crawl. I can only imagine what you have in store for the new place. The market seems good to sell now. I'm sure you'll get some decent pocket money and a good upgraded place to boot. We just dug the foundation for our new place so I can share in your excitement. Wishing you the best.

3. Klipsch Reference Premiere Series

4. Definitive Technology Procinema 2000.
In the next couple of years I want to

Welcome aboard! Sounds like you have some serious upgrades ahead. Speakers are always the toughest to choose. What are your listening tastes? What speakers have you heard that you like? There are a lot of folks in this thread who can give you a demo of options you may not have even considered. For example if you like the horn sound of the Klipsch's you may want to consider JTR speakers. Anyway welcome aboard and feel free to ask questions.

Thank you for welcoming me aboard Jeahrens.
I have listen to the MMGs at my local dealer fell in love them when I heard them. I thought they were so clear life like vocals, but don't the MMGS take some serious power to make shine and don't they have to be positioned a certain way to enjoy them?

I've listen to Definitive Technology also very good but didn't really care for the speaker enclosure.

I've listen to the new Klipsch reference premiere line at best buy, their is a local independent dealer that sells these also, thinking about shooting them an email to see if I can audition them on a personal level.

I haven't heard the SVS speakers yet.
The reviews are amazing on them.

My listening tastes vary day by day depending on my mood, but my wife listens Whitney Houston, The Carpenters, country music.

My plans are to upgrade to Dolby Atmos in the next year. Well I hope this helps. Thank you and have a good day.

Welcome AdamsEllis. I'm sure you already know this but, always, ALWAYS make sure you buy speakers that you enjoy listening too. Not what looks good on paper or what other people say are the best. From reading your posts it seems you prefer detailed sound and a good sound stage like the MMG's. While a perfectly setup room and listening environment will factor into those two things, here are some speakers that I have found (to my ears) been VERY good with detail and sound stage.

Paradigm Prestige
Monitor Audio - The silver range is great, if you have the budget the Gold range steps it up another level.
Legacy Expression

All of these are fairly up there when it comes to price. Which brings you to another option, depending on your excitement for DIY. Again, MY personal tastes have shown me that for the money I can get that $10k sound for a fraction of the cost if I put some sweat equity into my speakers. I was on the verge of buying the Monitor Audio PL300, but thought I'd first try to build the same sound. For roughly 18% of the retail cost of the Monitor Audio PL300, I have my latest speakers. When it comes to sound, the small differences between my speakers and the PL300 were so small during A/B testing, I knew I would not hear them without the speakers being side-by-side.

One last thing. The owner of Hawkeye Audio in Cedar Falls has been very gracious to help support our Iowa thread and often gives members of this thread some nice sale prices. The sale prices are normally good enough that they allow you to make an upgrade to the next level for no additional money. If you happen to find a pair of speakers you like, you may save yourself a good chunk of change if you give him a call and see what he has. He also normally has some nice gear for audition in his store if you ever find yourself up that way.

I think most of the stuff you have listed won't sound as good as the MMG's. I am really a fan of the magnapan sound.
Also, if you havent you should listen to the B&W's at audio video logic, they have a very good sound too.

Your welcome to listen to my JTR setup if you are so inclined, and if you don't get to hear dlbeck's 1st =)
His room is far better than most can hope for, its an experience!

Yeah too true on the Merle Hay cinema being pretty good.

I am swaying towards the MMGs, but I do have some of questions. I plan to getting a Dolby Atmos receiver next year . I was just wondering what would be a good a match for my height, width and rears speakers and Atmos speakers. I plan to use SVS for my subs, also using Emotiva amps. Also would it be an overkill to use 2 mid bass panels for the MMGs, one per speaker?

If you are really serious about the MMG's I would ask for an in-home demo 1st anyway, that way you will know how they sound in your room on your equipment vs what they have at the shop. The room is a huge factor in how your setup will sound.
