If you're just looking for the basics, the cheap models do a pretty good job. I'm using an inexpensive Sony (~$80) since my old one broke and the Oppo UHD player wasn't out yet. Picture is fine, bitstreams audio fine. My next step is a UHD Oppo (which will also replace my DVDA/SACD player). Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, the player ZTFUL is referencing is a 4K UHD player. And that's a very good price for one.

When comparing the Oppo UDP-203 to the "equivalent" Sony UBP-X800 (they are technically meant to compete for marketshare):

The Oppo has a heavier, more rigid chassis which will do better at damping vibrations that make it to the player. The Oppo has a better transport than the Sony. The Oppo has better DACs than the Sony. Video processing is pretty on par between the two.
The Sony offers streaming apps which the Oppo doesn't.

Ultimately, none of the differences are truly earth shattering. They will both produce a very high quality picture and sound great doing it. But the level of diminishing returns for the price gap rapidly diminishes as the model levels go up. To the point where the only *real* advantage that the Oppo 205 offers over the Sony UBP-X1000ES is better analog audio performance which means nothing to 98% of the people shopping for a UHD player.

I keep confusing my intentions with my abilities.

Haha yes! I have been slacking! Plus there are a few odds and ends that need finished up in there...but I suppose since that hasn't stopped me from watching movies, then I should get something setup. I'll try to figure out a date.
