Read the thread at the link that I posted. They tried everything they could, including a new light engine (which also had another new chip).

More mirrors? Hard to believe, since mirror count is related to pixel count, which would mean that your TV now has a higher resolution than 1080.

Ok, TV got fixed today. Repair guy said that the replacement DLP chip is labeled as a "High Contrast" chip and was originally from the 800/Diamond series. Everything looks beautiful, but I need to clean the screen.

My next problem to tackle is after about 30m the lamp starts flickering and then the set shuts off. Brand new bulb, but generic. Is that a bad bulb or a bad ballast?

I have read numerous posts of people having trouble with generic or "OEM compatible" lamps. They can even damage your electronics.

The lamps are specifically designed for each series of TVs. I would only recommend buying direct from Mitsubishi. Saving $20-$80 is no good if it ruins your TV or otherwise causes problems.

Only reason I went generic, is that I wasn't sure the TV was going to work anyway and didn't want to spend that kind of money on a tv that might be dead

I understand completely. Thankfully, I learned the easy way (here on AVS) before needing my first lamp.

I'm ready to order a philips lamp from shopjimmy, but I'm just wondering if that flickering & shut off is just a lamp issue, or the ballast. The ballast is only $25, so I might just get it anyway.

I also noticed that since the repair was done, I can't scan for any OTA channels. The scan section on the set up menu is grayed out and gets jumped over.

Don't over think it. It's most likely the lamp. Some people claim to have done well buying their lamp at ShopJimmy, but again, I only recommend Mitsubishi, and wouldn't take the chance with anywhere else. At best, it's a crap shoot vs a known entity.

As for the scan issue, have you double checked that the antenna was reconnected, and if so, that it was reconnected to the same input as before?

Hmmm. Ant 1 Air, or Ant 1 Cable? Try both? I'm stumped on that one.

Phillips? Really?

All my lamps from Mitsubishi have been Osram: Click image for larger version

When I did my first Lamp it said Phillips. Right on the bulb. They probably use the lowest bidder.

That is my point. It is not the brand, so much as the design and construction of the lamp that is key. "A lamp is a lamp, is a lamp" does not apply here. Like I stated before, I have read where people are happy with lamps from Shopjimmy. I have also read many horror stories. I personally would only go through Mitsubishi. To me, the lamps are still reasonable at $142, and I enjoy the piece of mind.

Oh, and there is this, from the Owner's Manual:

Quote:
Lamp-Substitution Alert
MEVSA recommends that you use only genuine Replacement Lamp Assemblies purchased directly from Mitsubishi or a
Mitsubishi Authorized Dealer or Mitsubishi Authorized Service Center. MEVSA advises that replacement lamps obtained
separately from the Lamp Cartridge and/or Lamp Assemblies obtained from unauthorized sellers may be incorrect for
your television, may not fit or perform properly and may even damage your television. MEVSA can not be responsible
for the performance, reliability or safety of any replacement lamps that are obtained from unauthorized sources.
YMMV

Well, good news. My $25 el-cheapo lamp is now working fine, since i changed it from bright to standard. Still ordering a philips or two from shop jimmy for when this one dies.

I would call back the company who put in your DLP Chip. They might of forgot to plug something in.

Well, my set has been repaired for 2 weeks, and all of my friends and family who have seen it are absolutely floored with how great it looks. The antenna problem fixed itself after unplugging the set for a while. Now I just need to clean the screen.

I just called Mits on my 73736 (May 2008 mfg date) and it's low level of white dots (stuck pixels) and the more noticeable graininess that has developed.

My experience with their CSR was less than stellar. Nearly impossible to understand her. She couldn't grasp what grain in the image meant. The only thing she would offer "since my set is so far out of warranty" was the DMD chip for free but still charge the $200 labor (plus mileage) fee. No room at all with this one. I politely declined the offer as she had no clue if it would affect the graininess I'm currently seeing.

keep pushing. don't settle for anything less than full coverage of parts and labor. (still pay the trip fee for the service guys, they don't work for mitsu)

WOOHOO! Got them to agree to pay for the labor and parts! thanks for the encouragement. Took about 15 minutes and many suggestions as to what it would take to satisfy me. Came back with the bulb offer counter first then finally gave in to the full parts and labor for the repair.
