I've had my KDS-R60XBR1 since early 2007. Changed the bulb once already about a year ago. A couple days ago the screen slowly started to go green on me. It is now completely covered by a "green haze", very annoying.

Researched online and found about all the problems everyone has had, the class action law suit, the warranty extension...

Called Sony today and since the warranty extension expired in June 2009, I'm screwed. They offered me:

KDL52XBR9 for $1325
KDL52V5100 for $800

Also found out about Tr State Modules, a company which repairs the optical blocks for $300.

I took the optical block out today using the service manual as a guide and cleaned the outside lens as well as using compressed air as best I could. Put it back together, tv fired up, but the image had the same "green haze".

So the million dollar question is, should I send the optical block to TSM or take Sony up on their offer?

Been doing some reading on the official threads for these two televisions and some are having major issues with "flashlighting", "auto-dimming", etc. Not too thrilled about Sony in general right now...

u could do both... Sony only asks for the serial number sticker when buying the replacement. Never heard about Tri State, is this via warrantee or just a general repair?

I don't really need a 52" LCD for $800 but I might get it. The work through TSM would be just general repair.

Thinking more about it, I wonder if there is any chance the bulb might be causing the problem as the screen is very dim as well...

I've already sent the OB to Tri State and should be receiving it within the next couple days.

Yes let us know how it looks.

How difficult was it to remove. I want to fix mine if needed in the future.

I did my best at making a walkthrough when I took it out; a little less than half the way down the page:

Wow. Good job. Looks pretty straight forward. No special tools required. Just a little know how and patience.

I hope the repaired block is good. Keep usupdated. And let us know if the repaired block has different parts installed like uv filters etc.

Sub'ed for results of ob repair.

Took Sony up on a 55V5100 as replacement for my 60A2000 ($600 out of pocket but oh well.....better than the nothing I was expecting ) but they are leaving the SXRD with me - even Sony wants nothing to do with them anymore

There are no stupid questions. Stupid answers are a whole other story...........

I am very interested in how this works out for you. I am looking to rebuild these myself. Thanks, John

I'm sure it's possible to take the thing apart, the problem is where do you find the replacement parts. Assuming the problem are the glass filters, where do you get them? AFAIK, Sony doesn't sell them seperately...

Update: The OB will be here Monday, I plan on installing it right away and will let everyone know my observations...

Alright, put the repaired OB back in, and turned the television on.

It is flawless, all problems have been fixed. I must have been getting used to the color defects because the picture quality is outstanding.

I will no longer post in this thread as my problems have been fixed, if anyone has any questions please post on the "Official 2005 Sony KDSR-50/60XBR1 SXRD Owner's Thread" located here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=584936

Thanks.

I had the same experience that so many other Sony TV owners have had. The picture turned green I called Sony, just for the hell of it and they made me this offer.

A new Sony KDL-60EX500 for $150 or a KDL46Ex500 for free. I took the 60" for $150, delivered to the house! I know Sony had a bad design but to me they more than made up for their poor engineering!

Tri-State module is not someone I can recommend to do business with. When my optical block went out, I scrapped my TV out and contacted TSM to see if they were interested in buying the optical block so they could rebuild it and resell it. They replied yes and that they would give me $50 for it. I spent a good hour removing it from my TV, carefully packaging it, and mailing it to them. That was 5 months ago and I have still not received my money. I contacted them numerous times and would never get a reply back from them. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and TSM keeps promising to pay me (only to satisfy the BBB), although they never have to date. I know its only $50, but is the principle that you should be able to trust a business such as this. Bad and unethical of them to treat a customer like this.
