I was referring to the lamp setting, not the picture...

Its in the menu settings, you can set it to standard or bright I have 1995 hours on my 73738 and after the light engine was replaced I saw a little flicker a last week and called Mits and they called the service company and they recommended to Mits to replace the bulb and it should be here on Monday under warranty, however I must say after checking brightness levels in the standard mode I use my advanced calibration settings are dead on I just may leave the original bulb in awhile longer as the flickering was only the one day last week which still puzzles me a bit

I didn't bother to check the service menu display, but I would estimate about 5800 hours. The dimming was only very slight but I was getting an occasional but annoying flickering in the top left corner of the screen when I had it in PC monitor mode and that also motivated me to change that lamp. I have a feeling that the original OEM bulb was defective. I did a lot of online reading around the time I first bought the MITS and opinions on lamp life of anywhere from 4000-8000 hours were based on 2009 models since the 2010 xx738 models had just hit the stores. My only partially educated guess is that environment may affect lamp life. Things like heat buildup and dust and foreign objects getting in the vents and collecting on the lamp. There are some very technically oriented forum members. Perhaps one of them is more knowledgeable about it.

My advice would be to buy one while they still have them at that price since the price seems to fluctuate between $53 and $99. I don't know how long you've had your set but the bulb is warrantied for a year.

My factory lamp on my 82738 is at 5476 as of today. It is 13 months old. I just took it out to clean the housing and it was still relatively dust free. The 65" in my other room gets really dusty and I have to constantly clean it.

We just need to keep watching the price of those lamps. $52 was a great deal if they are quality. I'd buy a couple more to have on hand if they are that cheap again. I'll keep watching Amazon and post if they are cheap again. Hopefully others here can do the same.

I toggled the standard/bright setting for my lamp(on a dark image), and there was just the slightest difference. I thought it would be more pronounced than that. I think I'll keep it on standard and get longer life out of my lamp...

Also, for those of you who have more in-depth technical knowledge(I've asked this b4 w/ no real substantive answer), does the "game" picture setting actually process the picture differently, or is it just a bunch of presets Mits believed would be better for consoles?

I'm having the same problem of flickering intermittantly as TatorTot on my 73838 bought in Jan/Feb 2011. This has been going on for about 4 mos. Have an extended warranty trhough the "warranty group" Had the technician out and luckily he saw it also. To do anything even under warranty he has to call Mits. 1st tech said to try reset and new bulb. Had replaced bulb about 2 mos ago and the flickering continues. The tech called them back and said I still have the problem. He said Mits told him this flickering was within "normal " and they wouldn't authorize anything further.

Have now called Mits back to tell them this is unacceptable esp since other people on the forum have had the same problem. What did I spend $450 for an extened warranty for with 2 free bulb replacements?

Does the problem seem to be fixed with a new light engine like TatorTot?

Can't believe Mits would say this is normal. Then last week in the mail got mailing on a big class action lawsuit agianst Mits. Unfortunately doesn't cover the 73838.

The light engine seems to have fixed it is been a few weeks
But is hit or miss
For others the flickering continuous after a new light engine

Call Mitsubishi and ask to speak to the higher ups or fine the number online I think it was posted in this forum . There located in California

The flickering is not normal

Edit

I see your warranty expired with Mitsubishi

Did you get a 2 year extension with dell ?

Hi thanks for the reply. Have a 4 year with the Warranty Group. Talked to them yesterday and since Mits won't attempt to fix the problem they offered to refund the original price that I paid for the TV. Wow! And I keep the TV! I didn't hesitate to take the deal.

So now I am looking for a new TV and will attempt to sell this one. Any suggestions on what to get that won't have these kind of problems? Are the 740/840's any better?

For reference: 65838. 2866 hours on OEM bulb on bright setting then it blew.

On a side note: Ordered a new bulb from DiscountTVLamps.com. Not the best experience. They advertise same day shipping on orders before 2pm. It took them 3 days to ship, and only after I contacted them on status. I paid for 2 day shipping. They credited back the shipping difference since it took so long. I finally received 5 days later. I ordered the more expensive "Osram" OEM replacement bulb for 84.99. They sent me the cheaper "NEOLUX" bulb. I complained that they sent me the cheaper 54.99 "OEM Compatible" bulb. They were only willing to credit me $20.00 difference instead of $30.00. They stated the "Neolux" was only $20.00 cheaper, even though it is not listed on their website that way. They gave me a 6 month extended warranty on the Neolux bulb. My other option offered was to just send the bulb back, at my expense, for a refund or exchange. Reading other reviews about this company on line, this seems to also turn into a disaster at times with this company.

Not a great experience. They did not live up to their shipping claims and it feels like they pulled the "bait and switch" on me. I wonder how many people would even notice they sent them the cheaper bulb.

Unfortunately, that experience is to be expected from knock-off sites, and you never know how long the lamp will last, or if it is even compatible. That's why I buy direct from Mitsubishi, Only $99 including the cartridge, a full year warranty, and you know it's gonna work. No surprises. No stress. No worries.

I had the same bad experience with "bait and switch" with a company called "A Matter of Fax". Stay away from them as well.

What's this about a class action suit? A Google search turned up one from 4 or 5 years ago but nothing recent. If you could post info about the mailing you received I would greatly appreciate it.

I posted something similar in the Panasonic thread, but figured I might as well share here too:

A few months ago I was in the market for a new TV, and did nothing but research for hours and hours. I decided to go with the Panasonic ST30 after reading nothing but great reviews about it. However, I have very recently been hit with this desire to own a Mitsubishi DLP - and have specifically been looking at the wd-73738 and wd-73740. When I was originally doing my research, I got hooked in to all the "PQ" hype and that was the only thing I paid attention to. I did not think about having a larger screen size, or the differences between the plasma and DLP picture themselves.

(May be playing with fire here, but) while I do believe that the actual picture quality of the ST30 is superior to that of the DLP, there are other reasons for me wanting to change; realistically, I will not own a projector anytime in the near future (within 5 years). Because of that fact, I feel like the DLP will deliver a more of a "theater" experience than my Panny will. The size is obviously bigger, and I have an appreciation for that "soft" look that DLPs are known for.

I am sharing this nonsense because I was wondering if anybody in this thread has an opinions of how to go about making the change, or any general opinions at all. Specifically, I was wondering if anybody can point me in the direction of somewhere to offer my ST30 as trade for the Mitsubishi...or if anyone that currently owns a DLP, feel free to PM me! (FWIW, I am located in South Florida).

wd-65738 tv screen goes black for a second or two several times a day. It started a month after I got it. At first, it happened a couple times a day, now several times. Does anyone else have the same problem? Should I be concerned? Only Dish HD Dvr is connected. The tv is 9 months old and I brought it brand new. Not refurbished or open box. Thanks!

Mine only does that when first turned on and I'm attributing it to finding the video source so I think my situation is different.
