Same for me with my 82738. It's been mentioned elsewhere in this thread. No real known cause. It's happened no more than a few times per year for me, and mine is about 3 years old.

My 82838 does that about every once every 12-18mo or so, no explanation. Had the main board replaced, that reduced it from happening once every 6-8wks.

Well I don't have the audio return channel on. I did before and the TV did the same thing with cutting off in the middle of watching something. I cut the ARC off like a year ago and had no problems until yesterday.
Kinda embarrassing with company over watching some movies !!! mad.gif

Yeah, it's a protection mechanism that protects the set from power surges.  If you aren't plugged into a surge protector, I would do so.  If you are, I would check to see if the surge protector is still active.  I had the same problem.  I noticed by surge protector was no longer protecting.  Since I switched surge protectors, I haven't had any problems.

You are correct as I did come home last Thursday and we had a power outage. However I have 2 of these to plug all of my gear into http://www.rakuten.com/prod/belkin-pureav-pf30-home-theater-power-console/q/loc/101/207514354.html and they were re-set to on Saturday well before I turned on all of the components.

This seems to occur whether or not you have it plugged into a surge suppressor or not because I have mine plugged into a UPS/Suppressor and it still happens.

I took a look at the service manual again, and it said that fast green blinking for 80 seconds after a shut off is lamp cooling.  I hope you get it figured out man.  I know it can be embarrassing.  Here is a link to the service manual.  http://www.avsforum.com/t/1448842/download-free-service-repair-manual-wd-65738

Thanks for the info on the service manual. However I have it already. This issue has only happened twice since purchasing this TV new.
Right in the middle of a action movie and the set turns off. Needless to say I was indeed upset as my friends were looking at me like W.T.H !!
The below info is from the OM.

Symptom
3. TV turned itself off and the light on the front panel started to flash.

Remarks
• Momentary power fluctuation can cause the TV to turn off
to prevent damage. Wait for the green light to stop flashing
and turn the TV on again.
• If the TV does not stay on, press the POWER button on the
control panel for ten seconds to perform System Reset. If
this happens frequently, obtain an AC line power conditioner/
surge protector.
• An unusual digital signal may have been received, triggering a
protection circuit. Wait for the light to stop flashing and turn TV
on.

Same here. I thinks it's just the rare, random power/signal fluctuations previously mentioned that occur.

Just press the MENU button...If I recall correctly, the current firmware version number should appear in the lower left corner.

I have a WD-73738 - it is about 4 years old. Last night the TV went into this "checkerboard mode." At first I thought it may be the signal, but after trying various inputs, I realized it was the set. I turned the set off for a while, and eventually after an hour or so the picture started to come back. This morning it was crystal clear.

This evening, it did it again, but this time it has not made it back to normal. I have attached a picture of the issue. Any ideas what may be going on?

Thanks all!!

I noticed you posted in the 2009 thread your set is a 2010 model. Need a little more info, how and what is connected? AVR involved? Tried switching cables?

Colour - my AVR is a Denon AVR-2312CI. I use HDMI connections only. I swapped out the WD-73738 with another TV, and the other TV worked fine. I also tried switching the cables (from all sources - BluRay, Sat box, etc) - all produced the same results as in the linked picture.

Nope, overscan is one of the downsides of rear projection displays - AFAIK, they all have at least some.

TV Shutting Off... Is it the Bulb or something else?

I have a Mitsubishi WD-73738. The TV has started shutting off after it is has been turned on for a few minutes. I've gone into the service menu and there are two error codes showing up. Error 34, Lamp Cartridge Failure, and Error 48, PWB-Main Failure. Most of the time I'm getting and error 34, and probably one out of 5 times I'm getting an error 48.

When the issue happens, I hear what sounds like a relay, switching off then on then off, maybe 3 or 4 times in a row, then the TV shuts off. The LED on the front of the TV stays solid RED most of the time this happens. Sometimes though, it flashes the error code 48 (Red blinks 4 times, Yellow blinks 8 times).

I've taken out the Lamp, and it looks ok. Do you think this is a Lamp issue or something else?

Most likely the main board(I think). My bro-in-law bought my 2008 65833 w/ and had a problem like that, he called Mitsu n raised hell. He got them to pay most of it(he paid roughly $250).

1st lamp? 2nd lamp?

How many hours on the lamp?
Replace the lamp.

Well, for anyone with the same issue... Replaced the Lamp, TV still shut on and off. Replaced the PWB-Main and Power Supply ($135 with 2 day shipping), and finally, we can watch TV again without it shutting off every 5 minutes

Ordered the parts from ShopJimmy.com. They have a deal in August for $15 off $100 or more. I ordered around 11pm on Wednesday and received the part on Friday with 2 day shipping.

Maintenance on DLP TV

Well I have had my TV for a little over 4 years now and I'm thinking it is about time to do maintenance on it. I was planning on replacing the bulb since I'm not sure how much longer it will last. Is there anything else that should be done. I think I heard about cleaning the "big" mirror and cleaning the "tiny" mirrors. Also blowing out the fans as they collect dust over the years. I now hear the fans ramping up than down as the TV is on so I think it may be getting a little warm inside the TV. Not sure if cleaning the fans would help this. Anyway I wanted to get your thoughts on what should be done and hopefully a scale of difficulty and directions on how to do it of course.

Good questions about the maintenance. Mine still shows a great picture and I'm paranoid about doing anything to it. I did change the lamp once and that's it.
