I hear Samsung has done a good job replacing a "chip" to fix the white dots.

I hope my service company that handles Circuit City warranties will fix mine...put in a service call today. Thankfully, I have a 4 year warranty because I have a Mitsubishi and I haven't read anything about Mit's having the white dot issues - only Samsung!

I have a Mitsubishi WD 73734 purchased in August of 2007 with 4 year warranty!

See the pics!!!!!

You may want to check this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1279379

The owners have Mits with white dot issues and are having nightmares getting Mits to resolve them. Hopefully the service company that honors your warranty are more professional.

btw, thanks for posting the pics! I've been considering DLPs and I have been trying to see what issues I may run into. I was almost sure I'll be purchasing a 2010 Mits 2 months from now but after seeing the thread I mentioned, I may have to re-consider.

That's many hours! I'm sure mine doesn't have half that.

I now have a dozen white dots and a few black ones. I also have a red dot and one that sparkles...

The Creator likes all color dots, or he wouldn't have made them!

Anyway, I posted a lonely thread last night with this link:
http://www.dlptvreview.com/dlptv/dlptv-warranty.html

It's probably stuck micromirrors, so you'll need a new DMD.

Dots all for now.

Thanks...We've already determined that its the DMD, but Mitsubishi is different than Samsungs in that warranty companies, and even Mit. themselves, will not replace the DMD board. They just replace the entire light engine. I am not sure why, but that is the way I would like it to be anyways. Just replace the whole thing!

So...Mitsubishi is refusing or dragging their feet with regard to replacing light engines?

No its my warranty company from Circuit City. I am not dealing with Mitsubishi at all as the set is going on 4 years old. Thankfully I purchased a 4 year warranty.

As I'm poised to buy a Mits DLP soon the whole question of warranties becomes important. Do you have any experience with SquareTrade, which is highly rated?

I hope the CC warranty takes care of your problem.

Because of this thread I've been searching for similar problems with other DLPs, and it's apparently common enough to inspire comments on various forums.

It's impossible to assess percentages, but the whole issue makes me wonder about failure rate on DMDs.

Some years ago when I was assessing what kind of display to buy I was attracted to LCOS because of the absence of movable mirrors with that technology. DLPs made me a little nervous because I reasoned that extremely tiny moving parts, moving continuously, might experience some failure.

So is this an endemic problem with DLP?

I also hope the warranty company for CC - "Assurant Solutions" - covers my issue.

I am very nervous though - I am sure they'll try and rip me off. I would be more than happy if they would just cut me a check, but its all about the amount of that check of course.

I would be very nervous to purchase a DLP set. But then again, there are problems with LCD's and Plasmas. With that said, its all about the percentages of issues and from what I am reading and seeing, DLP's are reporting MORE issues.

I actually had a Samsung DLP before my Mit. and it gave way to the infamous shadowing issue where half my screen had a dark shadow on it. So Circuit City was nice enough to take it back about 6 months after I purchased it as long as I upgraded (spent more $) on the Mit.. Now the Mit. has gone to the shidder.

That sounds worrisome. The only other display that interested me, besides the 73 and 82 Mitsus, was the here again gone again Vizio 72 inch LCD.

I want a big display for movies!

Nuts.

As much as possible ask for supervisors. I once had to call Investor Relations to get help for bad customer support, and a bureaucratic nightmare.

Good luck.

Oh I would love a 72" LCD, but I think my warranty company is probably just going to replace my DLP.

My advice to you is not to purchase a DLP. Even if you have to give a little on size and pay more - I would go LCD.

This is still not resolved. Assurant is giving me the run around. Its been over a month and they now have a new company coming out to look at the set tomorrow. They turned down Precision TV to replace light engine, probably because they wanted too much.

Now they've got a "Audio/Video Repair" out of Kernersville coming tomorrow.

I will post a new pic at some point. The dots have taken over - throusands of them.

The problem is still not resolved. Assurant FINALLY found a company and has given the green light after a month and a half. Audio/Video placed an order for a new light engine and Mitsubishi will take at least 30 days to get Audio/Video a new light engine! This is after a month and a half of hagling with Assurant who mostly have their heads up their butts. They have been dreadful to work with.

There are thousands upon thousands of white dots - the T.V. is not even viewable anymore.

I have told them that this time frame is simply not acceptable and to send me a new T.V. in a week. It should not take 3 months to get something fixed, given the amount of money I paid for the warranty.

I just wonder why Mitsubishi would take 30 (or more) days to be able to get a hold of a new light engine.

This is the same problem on my Mits WD65833. It is out of Warranty. Any ideas on getting a DMD board and doing it myself? ANy instructions online anywhere?

Thanks in advance,

They are somewhere. Do a search for them - I think they are found among threads dedicated to Samsung DLP's as they are having the same issues. I know changing out the DMD board is more complicated than just changing out the whole light engine which is the fix Mit. recommends for their sets. Samsung recommends just changing the DMD boards, but that is more work and still fairly expensive.

Hopes this helps and happy searching!

Problem finally resolved after about 3 months of haggling. Assurant solutions is sending me a WD 73738 3D set.

This was only after opening a Better Business Bureau complaint about 3 to 4 weeks ago!

After Assurant received notice from BBB, they took care of me promptly, with few questions asked.

THANKS BBB!

I have a issue with white and black spots that started after I changed the bulb. The bulb finally went out after four years. the tv was manufactured in December of 2007. It first started out with two white spots in the top left hand corner in March of 2012. Then every time I turned the tv on more would appear. I found this and other forums and found out this was occuring to other DLP owners also. Some said it was real expensive to fix. some had called Mitsubishi with no luck. I am going to make short and cut to the chase. I called Mitsubishi knowing my warranty had expired years ago,but I said what is it going to hurt. I explained my situation to the customer service rep and she asked if the spots were coming from any of the other devices that were hooked up to my tv, I stated no. She then stated that my DLP (DMD) chip was bad and that Mitsubishi was going to pay for the replacement chip if I agreed to pay for the $200.00 labor charge. I said I would be glad to pay the labor. I really did'nt want to get rid my DLP because when I changed the bulb the picture was like a new tv. Just as clear as a LCD. Mitsubishi set up everything and the tech is coming out on May 17 2012 to replace the chip. Well we will see what happens. Like the old saying goes "A closed mouth never gets fed". I will update this post on Friday.

So did replacing the DLP chip get rid of all the black and white dots? You're holding us in suspense, I am having the same problem. :-)

Thanks for letting me (and everyone else) know ASAP!

Thanks so much jejjden. I called Mitsubishi and said "I have a WD-65833 and have a bad DLP chip. I understand that you will provide a new chip and we have to pay $200 for the service call to put it in the TV". They said that is correct and scheduled for someone to come out in 5 days (12/24/2012).

I'll update after they come out.
