My DLP set has developed blooming/halos. When viewing white text on a black background the letters are surrounded by a glow. This happens with any bright object on a dark field.

I called the service company and they took the set. They refused to simply order the engine (as I suspect it needs). I just got off the phone with them and they say they are going to replace the bulb and ballast. (the bulb is less than a year old and the set is plenty bright....)

Is there any way a new bulb and ballast can fix a bloom problem? Or are they barking up the wrong tree?

How can a bloom problem happen before the light even hits the light tunnel? What am I missing?

If it matters, the set is a Mitsubishi WD-57831.
