I am on the market for a used Mitsubishi DLP set, and have been focusing on the 73 and 82 inch -738, -740, -742 sets around my greater area via Craigslist and such....
I really like the price on one I just went and looked at, and tested out with an Avia II disc.
However, there's one tidbit that's keeping me from pulling the trigger.
There's a small 'smudge' right in the middle of the screen, that's about 1cm by 3mm, and is dark.
If it was near the edge, I might not care, but right in the heart of the middle of the set.
Inspecting the front screen, it does not appear to be a scratch or ding from the outside/front of the set (as if something had hit it).
I would guess, that it's something behind this front protective screen.
When I gently press on the front screen, the 'smudge' does not move when the dlp 'pixels' move up and down slightly due to the bowing of the front screen.
(therefore, I also guess that the 'smudge' is not down at the projection source...bulb, color wheel, etc)
How are these constructed? Are there only 2 'screens' that the image projects onto? (the protective screen and the 'projection screen' immediately behind it?)
If there are 2 'layers' on the fronts of these sets...(please enlighten me if not)
The smudge could be either between these layers or behind the 2nd 'projection' layer (aka inside the set)?
However, I don't have much knowledge of taking one of these modern Mits DLP sets apart.
(I personally am coming from an older 2004 awesomely cal'd Hitachi rear projection set, which I"ve opened and dusted out/cleaned every year to get rid of this potentially 'same' issue?)
On my Hitachi, it was just a dust glob or two.
Have Mits DLP owners experienced something like this?
I theoretically imagine, looking at the screw mounts/casing, that I could either
1) remove the front protection screen? (if the smudge is directly on the back side of the protection screen)
or
2) remove the upper, rear, back casing? (if it's a 'dust glob' issue and is just sitting there on the back of the projection image without having to remove the front protection screen)
Are both possible? Is only 1) possible?
Can I get some Mits owners to chime in here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I know there's a good chance that I can remove this smudge, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Thanks for any feedback, gang.
