I just purchased a 51s500 and have two problems, ( green tint in black areas of movies such as space or nite shots). I would like to know how to acess the service menu and correct this problem, but not sure of the correct procedure. The other problem is a squuishing or wharping effect on the left side of the screen about an inch from the edge. This is most noticeable on news stations with the ticker tapes at bottom of screen. It shows up on all aspect modes including 16.9 standard. Any ideas ?

The left side warping (or speed bump) is very common on Hitachi sets. My father's 61SWX10b has it, my 43FWX20b has it (although I have made it less noticeable buy adjusting the green convergence grid), and my friends new S500 has it (he hasn't noticed it so I have left it alone...hopefully he doesn't read this thread;)).

Bill Gambrel...can you post the info on purchasing the convergence overlay grids? Does using these eliminate the left side speed bump?

The templates are plotted on a high quality 4 mil clear Mylar material using a HP plotter that is accurate to 0.2% over that total plot area. The templates have dashed trim lines that are offset outward from the alignment pattern boarder in 1/16" increments. You can trim the template to be the exact size of the screen, or include "mounting tabs" by using the dashed trim lines.

In addition to the geometry alignment grid, the templates also contain markings for adjusting the Raster Tilt, Raster Position, Vertical Size and Horizontal Size. Please refer to the respective Hitachi Service Manual and the Hitachi Tweaks section for information on using the various features of the template.

The following Hitachi templates are available for order:

10B/12B Series 16:9 Templates:
43UWX10B - Order template 43WX10B @ $42 each
53SWX10B or 53SWX12B or 53UWX10B - Order template 53WX10B @ $48 each
61SWX10B or 61SWX12B or 61UWX10B - Order template 61WX10B @ $55 each

20B Series 16:9 Templates:
43FWX20B - Order template 43WX20B @ $42 each
51GWX20B or 51SWX20B or 51UWX20B or 51XWX20B - Order template 51WX20B @ $46 each
57GWX20B or 57SWX20B or 57TWX20B or 57UWX20B or 57XWX20B - Order template 57WX20B @ $51 each
65SWX20B or 65TWX20B or 65XWX20B - Order template 65WX20B @ $60 each

10B/11B Series 4:3 Templates:
43FDX10B or 43FDX11B - Order template 43DX10B @ $32 each
53UDX10B - Order template 53DX10B @ $48 each
61UDX10B - Order template 61DX10B @ $51 each ***

*** The 36.6" screen height of the 61UDX10B exceeds the 35.6" printable area of the 36" wide media. The 61DX10B template contains all of the grid lines, but does not extend fully to the top and bottom of the screen.

The templates are available from:

These templates will also work for the S500 model. I have used my templates which are based on the same dimensions as the ones above. I have not noticed any distortion on the S500 after using them.

Thanks for the replies,it looks like my warping problem isn't unique to only my set after all. I also own a43uwx, & a 65swx that doesn't have either problem so I thought I had got a lemon. I had considered exchanging it for another, but I quess I could have the same problems with another set. I will try the adjustments on Saturday night, my Mother recently had a stroke so I have been staying with her after work at night. Also the only computer access I have is at work so I cant reply to any posts till Tuesday. Thank's again. Billy

The problem is amplified when using L-R overscan less than 5% (I run 4%). It is not very apparent at 5-6%. Most Hitachi sets are at 5-6% horizontal and 4% vertical from the factory (I don't like that since I am a purist who likes it even all the way around).

TY for the template ordering info............My question is this...when using this grid does it have even grid lines from each side......?on my set when in user convergence , i notice that the first lines from each side are a different distance...left side first line is 2 1/2 inches away and the right side first line is 1 1/2 inches away...is this normal? Also, when using grid would i first just use green conv lines in dcam to set geometry and grid and then do red and blue to green???also can someone post how to adjust raster tilt and pincushion???

thanks

Yes, first do green.

Unfortunately, Hitachi's biggest flaw is no digital geometry controls (so no raster tilt and pincushion adjustments). If they would just add this (and get rid of the analog overscan pots) and track grayscale a bit better, they would have the perfect RPTV.

Not on the template. The template should have equal distance on both sides to the first line. I build my own CAD file and get it plotted locally. I have never heard of any problems from AEC templates. If you do see different distances on left and right, I would contact them.
