I just called buydig, described the problem and checked for the option of exchange. Got a quick NO. They claimed they don't exchange TV, period. All problem should go to manufactor. When I asked that some internet users did have the experience of replacing a defective DLP set with BD, I was told that truth wasn't be told by "those users" because BD never did that.

Well, I guess that's how internet shopping works, saved me a couple of hundred bucks but no service afterwards. Will wait for the tech guy.

If the tech guy does something to the light engine, either fix or replace, that shouldn't have some extra impact on other aspects of the TV, right?

If it is a fan, that should be an easy change. If it is the color wheel, you might want to have them send another TV out and take that one back. You could have the Light Engine changed, but you are in the period that you can send it back. I had a cosmetic issue with my TV from Buydig and they were great at sending out another no charge.

I currently have the TV Guide auto-on feature turned off. This is my second TV in basement, which I use to watch some weekend sports and late night movie, so I can't care less about the TV Guide feature. Can I turn the whole feature off? I mean not only the auto-on thing, but also don't have it run at the background to update the list. Not sure whether this will eliminate the offline noise.

The fan has no way of shutting it off that I know of. I don't recall BD having that policy of no returns on TVs. I thought they give you a certain time period where you could exchange or return and pay a stocking fee, but their site does say no returns. You may just want to wait and see what the service tech can do.

I had a 62HM95 and now I'm replacing with a 62HM196 due to various problems.

Toshiba has apparently removed IEEE 1394 ports from the new 62HM196 models. Therefore, I have no idea how I'm going to use my RCA Audio/Video Hard-drive for recording shows using TVGOS.

The TV is currently in route and I may have to refuse delivery if all I can do is use a VCR for recording.

Does anyone know if the new 62HM196 can be used with a AVHD? Can I use my existing RCA AVHD that has only IEEE1394?

I need to know quickly so I know whether to accept delivery of this TV. PANIC!!

Thanks.

Neil

My 46HM95 started making a buzzing sound about a month before the warranty was up. Sounded like a bad fan. I get with Toshiba to have someone sent to look at my TV. An authorized shop calls and wants me to bring in the TV(45 minutes away). I told them the warranty was in home. They tell me they need to get authorization from Toshiba to get paid to drive to my home. These dudes call back a couple of days later and tell me that they haven't heard back from Toshiba yet on paying them mileage and that it would be much better if I bring the unit in and they would get to it as soon as it comes through the door. So, I decided to take the unit in.

After about 3 weeks they said it is fixed. I pick it up on a Friday night and the buzz is gone. Saturday morning, the buzz is back to stay again. So, I called the repair shop and told them they didn't fix it. They told me to bring it back in and I said no way. They are coming to my house this time. They said again that they had to contact Toshiba and get authorization to drive. I called Toshiba myself to see what the hold up was. Come to find out, Toshiba had already paid this place to make the trip to my house before I brought the unit in to them. Toshiba said they would have their legal department contact them.

A week later(today) Toshiba called and told me to contact the repair center to make arrangements to pick my set up. I called and the repairman was pretty pissed at me. He told me that TV's are supposed to make a little noise. I told him not like this they aren't. He then told me that I need to go home, turn the TV on, call him back and hold the phone to the back of the TV so he can hear the problem himself. I laughed at the guy and told him that may be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. So, I called Toshiba again. What a bunch of goof balls.

I spoke with Toshiba and learned...... since the IEEE1394 port has been removed, it's now impossible to record in High-definition if using a 62HM196 (not possible USING ANY AVHD). Only standard def. can be recorded.

This is unacceptable (to me) and I will therefore refuse delivery of the TV.

I must say that Toshiba Customer Service is great. They are working with me to find a solution. The sets have a beautiful picture.

I should add that the fan/color wheel are very quiet even during use.

The model does have a fan running to keep the cable card slot cool.
This is normal.

Is it possible to fix this yourself by using a compressed gas duster, or does it require a technician? The set is still under warranty, and I also have an extended warranty with Best Buy.

Are you sure that's dust and not a part of the light engine drooping into the light path as documented in the 50HM66 thread? Your description fit the symptoms perfectly.

Don5328: your problem has nothing to do with dust. It's a manuf. defect. From what I remember, Toshiba "forgot" to add locking washers on a certain part of the tv, which sometimes comes loose with shipping. It ends up obstructing some of the light and you get the shadow

Enmoco: since you seem to be very knowledgeable about dlp bulbs, I have a question for you ( or for anyone else that would know). My tv uses the toshiba d95-lmp bulb. How long can I expect this bulb to be available for purchase? Several years? Since our tvs are now discontinued and the new series uses a different bulb, should we be stocking up while they are available? Have any rp dlp/lcd users gotten screwed over by not being able to get their hands on a bulb, permanently? Doesn't the 42hm85 have that problem? I'm just afraid that several years down the road, I won't be able to get a replacement...

As the technology is not that old and is evolving rapidly, there is no hard data to go on. I can say major mfgs. will not leave the record numbers of buyers of these displays hanging.I would say you won't have to worry about not being able to find a new lamp for a great many years.

Wow, that light engine has really came down in price. It was close to $800 in January. Same goes for the lamps. They were over $300 early in the year.

Received my 62hm195 Thursday. Connected it to Comcast HDMI. Worked perfectly. Friday night get home from work and when I turn it on it makes like a turnsignal clicking sound from the back left side of TV and the pic changes brightness levels back and forth. Still getting cable signal. Thought it might be lamp not seated properly but it was. Even removing cable didn't help and no cs for the weekend! Any help would be appreciated.

Thursday - failed by Friday? Take it back to the store you got it from, there really isnt much else you can try except for unplugging it from the wall and trying again. Sounds like it could be the light engine.

Greetings!

I've been planning to buy a RP set for a year now and after reading AVS for two months I've managed to turn my brain to jelly and still, I think, converge on a decision. The 62MX196 looks like a great price/performance option and the right choice for me. I am not, however, as confident as I would like to be about this. The substance of my reservations lies in what appears to me to be the disappearance of Toshiba DLPs from the AV landscape. Toshiba's dealer locator for Austin brought up a screen that said, "20 dealers found" and actually contained 15. I called all of them. Not one had an MX. In fact, I couldn't find a single 196 series Toshiba DLP. Sam's Club had a 56HM16, which I'm guessing is a 66. Of course Costco has the HM116. But Sears doesn't have them, even on their website. BB has some online, but not in stores or in their system, nor do Fry's or Conn's. Online options for the MX with any discount are two of the usual suspects or some Fly By Night. Are retailers backing off because they lack 1080p input?

Where are they? People have been lining up to buy Sammys and Sonys and Mits by the truckload as soon as they're available and their forums are buzzing. This place is dead. Even Toshiba's website has this year's 1080 sets buried at the bottom of their product list under the 720s and last year's entire line. These sets have been shipping for a couple months right? What am I missing here?

I'm not sure you are missing anything, Plasmarc. I got one of those 116's at Costco and it is an outstanding TV. Furthermore, no one stands behind a product better than Costco. I understand your confusion because making the plunge into HD is a confusing decison to make with all of the competing technologies and companies. If it helps, no matter what you buy rest assured that it will be out dated in a few years, so a right decision is not all that much better than a wrong one.

Argh. Ok, I just got off the phone with Lee at notOne notCall and what was certainly one of the most pleasant online ordering experiences I can recall. I'm now a member of what appears to be a woefully diminutive brotherhood of Toshiba DLP owners. I can only assume the small number of Tosh purchasers is due to the extraordinarily high level of intelligence, insight, and discernment necessary to recognize that Tosh rools. I also understand that people who own Toshiba products are better looking than people who choose other brands.

Even Toshiba's website has this year's 1080 sets buried at the bottom of their product list under the 720s and last year's entire line. These sets have been shipping for a couple months right? What am I missing here?

Welcome mate!

Also remember that you ordered, and were looking for, a Cinema Series, which is in limited distribution, so you won't find it at every mom and pop Toshiba shop, or Sears or Best Buy...
