Does anyone even have a vague idea when the LG DU TVs might come out?

The DU-52SZ61D is due to ship anytime now. As for the 56" and 62" sets, I have no realistic idea.

This is a terrific summary.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working.

How many segments will the DU-52SZ61D's color wheel have?

So from reading this summary, it is apparent that LG has no plans for a 40-something inch with the HD2+ chip. I guess that leaves me with a Sammy or the new RCA for my 43" width space.

I'm not positive, but I believe this will use a 7 segment color wheel.

Edit: This set does use a 7 segment color wheel.

LG has not released any info on a 44" HD2+ DLP. However, I would not be surprised to see one next year.

Now where can I find one? I have looked on their site and there is nowhere close to me that sells them :-((... I was looking forward to getting a LG DU-52SZ61D for xmas, but it's not looking promising. I need a good reliable dealer, either online or close by that I can go to purchase one. Neither of these have I found to this point.

Release of the DU-52SZ61D appears to be delayed. They are now saying December.

FYI,

BestBuy is currently having a one day online only sale today for the 44" Zenith E44W46LCD. The price is very good.

The price was $[MSRP Only] and it came with a free 'cheap' Koss home theatre system. I ordered it and picked it up last night. The picture looks very good and doesn't have the dreaded vertical lines or green tint (or not enough to bother me...I did try some tweaks I read in these posts and then noticed a green tint so I went back to the default settings). The SD TV from my Comcast digital box does not look good, but it should improve if and when I get an HD box and don't have to use the composite video feed. I did notice the Comcast channels over 200 looked much better.

The main complaint I have now is that the silver case looks horrible in my Cherry wood entertainment center so I plan on taking it back next weekend and look longer for a more suitable black-cased TV. I live in Massachusetts, so if anyone is interested in buying it off me at my cost and picking it up before next weekend, let me know (including un-opened Koss system).

Robert I read that thread that you started.. a while back. There was also discussion about why the canadian models had the HD2+ while the U.S. model has the older HD2 chip.

Was just wondering if/when the DU model that has the HD2+ will be available...etc.
Thanks

I wish some local big chains would carry the RU-44SZ80L LCD. I like LG and can't get a DLP, so this looks like a nice option. If I can find one locally.

Do they have this model? I know they have the DLP. My biggest concern is that I won't be able to return it easily like at CC, BB or Sears. I've bought my entire Paradigm speaker set and AV receiver from Absolute Sound. Great guys there.

A question for those who have seen the RU-52SZ61D with the HD2 chip.

I went to BB and saw this set playing "finding nemo" as well as the 44". they both exhibit really bright pictures..much more so than the samsung 5063 set sitting right next to it. I mean the brightness of the LG allows it to show more details than the other sets sitting next to them.

I tried to adjust other sets (samsung, mits etc) but couldn't... the LG control was much simpler to make adjustments.

Question is.. I know that LG marketing dept. has been promoting the so call 600 cd/m2 Brightness...whatever it is... is this for real? are the LG sets brighter than most other manufacturers? or is this just a marketing ploy and at the same time I just didn't know how to adjust other sets.

Robert, don't mean any disrespect here but...where did you get all this info about the sets? because the DU - 51" model is still listed as using HD2 chip on their website.

Thanks

I do not know specifically what they carry, just that they are an LG dealer. Best Buy does carry the Zenith E44W46LCD that is the same base set but the cabinet is silver and there may be feature differences.

I have noticed that the LG sets seem to be a little brighter as well. I do not know why this is, but technical specs on the LG put the peak brightness (max contrast & brightness) at 500 and 550 cd/m2 for the 52" and 44" sets, respectively. Average brightness (VESA 9-point) is given as 450 and 500 cd/m2, respectively. Note this applies to the RU-**SZ51D and RU-**SZ61D models only.

The DU-52SZ61D was first announced at CES last January as an HD2+ set. I have not seen anything besides what was recently added to the website to think that this has changed. We will have to wait for more information to be 100% certain, but I doubt that they would release a premium set using the HD2 chip. The marketing department maintains the website and does not always get everything correct the first time.

Thanks Robert,
I just got back from another BB and saw the LG RU-52SZ61D right next to teh samsung 5085, Kirk model sporting an HD2+ chip.
No contest, the Sammy's HD2+ chip gives it a definite ad in sharpness and contrast. However, the LG's brightness is quite evident. Giving me the impression that if LG does it right with the HD2+ chip, the set's PQ should be very good indeed, coupling with the more attractive LG's cabinet.

I'm torn right now...since a 46" set may be more aesthetically appealling in my room than a 52". A 50" would be perfect but LG makes no such size. Sammy has a 46" HD2+ table top set coming out ...hhmmm..

Here in Vancouver we have the Future Shop store chain....

I have compared the 52" LG with HD2+ side by side with 50" Samsung HD3 and Samsung Captain Kirk models with HD2+....Future Shop runs a closed circuit HD demo feed through all their TV's continuously for direct comparisons....lots of aerial fly-bys of scenery across Canada, fantastic variety and PQ.

The LG was a clear winner to me. I didn't see any false contouring or 'mosquito noise', instead a fantastic razor sharp picture with excellent color I could step right into. Too bad it's not yet available in the states. I plan to buy the 44" version in a few months, unless JVC comes out with a smaller model in their new HD-ILA series.

The Samsung HD3 set came close in color balance, contrast and dark area detail, but had a visibly softer image and artifacts when it had to display fine detail such as the rigging on a sailing ship. This must be due to the lower 640H x 720V resolution of the HD3 chip, which uses 'wobulation' to double the apparent resolution.

Trailing a distant third was the Samsung Capt. Kirk pedestal model...sorry, but I saw a lot of false contouring, especially on darker scenes. Also, noticeable mosquito noise and a constant shifting and shimmering appearance to the pixels, as though there was an underlying video noise riding along with the main signal. I've noticed this on two occasions in two different stores

There's my 2 cents!

Have been lurking for a while, but it's time to spend some $$$.
I've pretty well decided on the RU-48SZ40 , for multiple reasons.

1. Size - I do not want to reorganize my family room, so the size, 127 cm, is almost perfect (max 130 cm on my stand between two book shelves)

2. Esthetics - the gloss black finish goes well with my decor, my Encore "Take 5" speakers, my HTPC in a Sonata case... you get the picture.

3. Price - it's onsale (20% off) until next Friday at Future Shop.

4. I/O features - note the comment about HTPC above.

I've looked at the PQ and to my eye, it's awfully good, but before I plunk down any money, is there anyone with any real world comments to make?

Good or bad, I'm interested. I've searched and searched and so far haven't heard anything negative about this unit, but then again, I haven't really heard much at all.

The only negative in my mind is the speakers that come with it - I really don't want them, so would prefer to not have their cost included.

Any and all opinions would be welcomed.

Wow!!! I can't wait to see the new LG with the HD2+ chip.

your comments regarding the samsung was interesting. I had a chance to see a 5063 and a Kirk model side by side. And I thought the Kirk was the clear winner. The color was more realistic while the 5063 was leaning too much toward the orange. The kirk was also much sharper and more contrasty as well.

BTW, what's the LG's contrast ratio? they're awefully low on most of their models..

I’m in Canada and on a recent visit to Future Shop I noticed the LG DLP (RU-52SZ61D). I had been anxiously waiting for the Sammy 74 series to be announced in Canada and was actually looking to see if Future Shop had any information (we still have no idea when it will be or what the price point will be).

I was impressed by the LG. The picture was bright, sharp and detailed, looking better than all of the large screen CRT sets alongside. The Sammys (63 and 85 series) were scattered elsewhere around the store and the LG picture seemed as good, if not better (at least, than the Sammy 63 series). The price on it was $400 more than the 50†Sammy 63 series ($Cdn).

The details I’ve been able to get on the LG’s specs are limited and it seems that they're different if you look at the same model number for Canada vs the U.S. Supposedly, the Cdn version is a HD2+ with a 1500:1 contrast ratio and a 6 segment color wheel. Except for the 2000:1 contrast ratio on the Sammy 74 series, some of the other specs seem pretty similar (HD2+ and 6 segment wheel). There's no mention of the DU series being available for Canada.

What gives with the same model number being detailed with different specs depending on whether you look at the Cdn vs US site? Has anyone else had viewing experience with the Cdn LG RU-52SZ61D (there's no real mention/review of them in this forum)? And how, exactly, does contrast ratio translate into viewing experience, because this set’s picture did look very good?
