Got my 'refurbished' EX700 yesterday. The tv doesn't look like refurbished - all packaging was still original with all protective films. The picture is on par with XBR2 but Bluray picture is sharper with more details. I find the picture to be warmer on normal setting (which I normally use) than on XBR2.

Is there a way to check the hours on these refurbished sets? If so, are they set back to zero or do they show the previous hours?

Also, is there some kind of indicator that it is a refurbished set?

If Sony offered you a new set how would you know it's not a refurbished set, if it is packaged just like a new set?

There was no indication of prior settings or use on mine. The unit was in "pristine" condition as was the packaging...inside and outside. The unit does all it's supposed to as far as I can tell with no audio or video related problems.

If they didn't tell me it was refurbed I would not know and it could pass as a new set.

That's exactly my observation.

fpconvert, where did you get you unit shipped from? My came from Chicago (O'hare airport was the first tracking location).

That's where my set came from as well, I believe that is a Sony distribution warehouse. My set is Supposably New as that was my offer from Sony but, I'm curious to know how anyone would know the difference, if the refurbished sets are not marked in some way and the packaging is just like a new set.

My set was delivered yesterday and is still in the box and I'm more than likely going to sell it, therefore I'm not going to unbox it completely; I did remove the top portion of the box to check for any damage.

I just wouldn't want to sell it as new if Sony has pulled some kind of fast one, know what mean?

I haven't fired mine up yet but i also removed the top portion to see the TV condition and it looks brand new to me. They said refurbished but cosmetically it really does look brand new. No one could tell the difference with the naked eye.

Sent my letter in today via certified mail, figured I had nothing to lose since I live in CA. Hopefully the litigation here will yield better results.

you know, after spending a few hours adjusting the color, white bal, etc, i got to say i'm much more impressed then i was a few days ago. BD looks better on this set then the XBR2 IMO.

the off angle viewing isn't really and issue, and even from my kitchen bar it's watchable.
that said, while setting the brightness if i wasn't directly centered on the TV, the right side bars were one to two numbers lower the left (depends on your angle).

i'm happy with my deal.

later,
JJ

I received a 46XBR9 from Sony some months ago for a different issue with a LCD projection and the refurb they sent me said REFRUBISHED on the actual box. And if I remember correctly the TV itself has a sticker saying refurbished on it also. Months later I got a 46XBR9 new one sent to me and I saw no markings of the word REFURBISHED any where. Also it was packaged slightly different. The refurb had clear stickers along the bezel of the tv while the NEW tv did not. And yes I did not confuse the two, New tv no stickers around bezel, Refurb had stickers around bezel.

That's actually a bit scary. A refurb should be marked as such.

Isn't it illegal, in some states, to sell a refurb as new? Selling new PCs that had refurb parts and /or selling customer returns as new is what Packard Bell got reamed for. Anyone remember that? Maybe 10 years ago??

Check on the serial number sticker on the back of the set for the word "Refurbished".

You also need to remember that refurbs have a limited supply & they may have ran out & had to send a new one.
I know when Sony replaced my XBR1 I got a new set not a refurb.

Nice mr. Wally. Same situation here. Now to find someone who wants to buy a beautiful XBR2 with a slight tint issue Unfortunately my place is too small for two 60" TVs or i'd gladly keep them both.

I'm on my third OB replacement and I was denied a replacement from Sony. How can I get in touch with Sarah? Anyway, congrat.

Are you planning to pay for the OB repair yourself?

I too was offered a replacement...however isn't a 55inch offer (plus some money) to replace a 70 XBR2 rather insulting???

I wish they had a true 70 incher in their line we could push for...

I note that back in May you said that you felt that your optical block had problems. Is that the original optical block, or have you already had a replacement? Have you replaced the OB since you mentioned the problem in May?

Anyone knows how much it would cost to have the optical block replaced yourself? If I were to accept a replacement TV, wouldn't it be a good idea to have the OB replace? I would hate to see a non-functional big TV just sitting in a room collecting dusts.

The retail price for a rebuilt OB from Sony for the XBR2 SXR's in the US is $1619.99, if you return the old OB in exchange. (Or you can purchase an OB outright for $3010.00 and keep the old OB!) If you're not experienced with working on electronics, you'd probably also have to pay labor for someone to install the new OB. I've had OB's fail at about 5 months and 3 months of use. It would not be a good idea for me to pay to have the OB replaced 2-4 times/year ($3240-6480+labor/year). YMMV.

You might be able to find a third party rebuilder of OB's that sells them for less, but since it seems to be the SXRD chips themselves that fail in the yellow staining, I'd question where they got their replacement chips.

IMHO, the dump would be a better place than my room for a non-functional big TV, if I couldn't sell it or give it away for parts.

Here's a sticker from one of my OB replacememts with the prices:

If you accept a replacement and you bought an extended warranty back when you purchased the set, how does that work?

Does the release clause also void the extended portion of the warranty?

Don't know for a fact, but since you have to send in the sticker with the serial number from the back of the set when you apply for a replacement, I doubt that any company that services extended warranties would work on a display that they couldn't identify- whether you bought the extended warranty through Sony or a third party.

Tri-State Module rebuilds XBR1s for around $300. You also have to remove it yourself, pay for two-way shipping, then re-install it. I think it carries a 6-month warranty. For some, this is worthwhile, if it ends up lasting a few years.

You'd also have to have an XBR1 instead of an XBR2

Tri-State Module might offer replacement OB's for the XBR2 SXRD's at some point, but they don't seem to mention them now. For the sake of those that can't participate in the exchange program for the XBR2's and have OB failures out of warranty, I sure hope that Tri-State Module or some other rebuilder steps up to help with cost-effective repairs. It's crazy to have to trash an expensive display like these after a short time.
