Yeah, originally I thought the phosphors on CRT faces were plenty dense enough and there would not be much difference between a 7" gun and a 9" gun on the same size screen. At first I noticed that Mit uses a 9" gun on its 73" and 7" guns on everything else and figured that because of the increased size of the 73" the 2 pix would look basically the same.
I was wrong. There is a noticeable difference between the performance of the 7" vs. the 9" - it appears optically, esp. on ID sized screens. This came out on the Zenith and Philips 9" gun 65"ers, and then on the Mit 9" gun 65", which came later.
It also shows its ugly head when ceiling pj owners try to get the nth degree of performance out of a 7" gun thrown onto a 10' screen. Only a 9" gun will perform adequately there. (And you still need a double stack to retain the light level on that big a screen, which is another discussion...)
That's why I am so behind this mod, and so grateful to Owen, the remarkable Aussie with the primo super deluxe fully tricked out 57" Hitachi - all tricked out by
him, and him alone - who discovered it!
Thanks again Owen! I will continue your tradition -
