I really have no idea if I will even be able to get the HDTV in April as I am hearing its being discontinued. Its going to be either the HL-S5687W or the HL-5688W I hope, and thats what BrandsMart says is being discontinued!!

Anyways if I am able to afford anything else besides my TV and my Stand its going to be in the price range of 400-600, and thats only if I can find the 687w or the 688w for 15 or 1600!

So what would you suggest?

I have never had a home theater system.

I also have never had a HD DVD player, much less a Blu-ray player, but the blu-ray player costs like 1000 bucks or so right? So I was thinking why not just get the PS3 that has the bluray in it for 600?

Suggestions?

EDIT: the HTIB and Blu ray player were just two of my ideas. I would really like to know of other things that I might not know of to go with my DLP.

First, the new Samsung models (HLTs) are coming out in April, which is why the HLS models will be discontinued then. You will probably be able to get a great price on an HLS at that time (if there are any left), or see how the HLTs compare at that time. Second, the least expensive high def players are the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player (you can get one for <$400) and the PS3 you mention that plays BDs for $600. I went with the A2 myself (IMO, both high def formats are here for many years to come).

You can get:
* PS3 w/ BluRay player: $620;
* XBOX 360 + HD-DVD add-on: $299 + $199;
* Oppo Unconverting DVD player: $199;
* Basic surround sound system: ($600? ask in the sound forums);
* Professional calibration of your set: $400 - $500;
* An HDMI cord if you have HD cable: $60.

That would cover your basic options.

$60 would get you about 8 six-foot HDMI cables at monoprice.com

Monoprice.com is the place to get HDMI Cables. IMO better quality than the monster cables. I am also wandering what type of surge protector/conditioner I should get to go with my DLP 50"

Which would be 100% as good performance-wise.

Joey, I'm in the same boat.

I currently have a 360 and an older progressive scan DVD player. I want to see how well the TV can make my old DVD player look before I think about jumping into a new one (since the TV is the only thing the wife'll let me get!). I'm picking up my new TV Stand / entainment center on Friday so I should be all set up by Saturday after I pick up the TV.

monoprice is the place to go for your cable needs. Excellent prices and many on these forums will vouch for their quality.

Eventually, I'm going to get a HT system, but that's for another day with some more dollars.

Maybe you can. The price I quoted was Amazon's for the cheaper 20 gig (which is actually saying $680 today).

Another alternative is the upcoming, second-generation Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray player with Silicon Optix HQV processing. That would give you an excellent picture on DVDs, something you may not get with the PS3. It's expected to cost around $650 online.

True.

However, Samsung has yet to not *uck up a DVD or Blu-ray player somehow. I'm very skeptical it will produce Blu-ray quality to that of the PS3, but we should find out soon enough.
