Well, it was actually 5 years, but yeah, you're right ;-) I realized that the people who received better offers had the newer A2020 or A3000 and/or larger screen, so that accounts for the better offers I'm sure. Talked it over with the wife and we are going to take the deal for 55 inch.

I'd ask what you would have to pay for a LED model. Like a NX720, and see some options.

I just replaced the lamp in my KDS-R50XBR1. The last lamp went out with a spectacular explosion! Now I have a beautiful crisp image with no red channel. I've skewed the menu setting to tint the image as red as possible, and still nothing.

Could the lamp exploding have damaged the OB? The picture is uniform - no splotches, green blobs, etc. Just no red. Any ideas, anyone?

Sounds like one of your component cables is loose.

Seems I am a year-and-a-half out of luck My 60A2020 purchased 3 July 2007 is on its third bulb & last leg. The old girl has developed a reddish-orangish-brownish tint. The whilte levels are way off, the blacks are tuning gray & Standard mode gives me the best picture now. She had a good run, but now I think I have to let her go. If the 929's were made in sizes larger than 65 inches I would probable go that route. As it is, that 3D 70 inch Sharp (735 series, I think) is looking good. C'est la vie!

It's a bad light engine. If you are still under warranty, call & complain, and keep complaining until you get a tech sent out that will give you a replacement light engine. The second tech did it for me. Of course at this point I think all of the replacement engines are refurb's of questionable quality and durability. You might want to go to Sarah Kepler on Facebook and see what thy will offer you as a replacement.

I just bought a used 60" unit. It will be used as the rec room TV. Mostly for kids vid games, some sports, maybe movies and such. So far I am really quite impressed with it. Sure, it does not do 1080p24, but it has everything else I want/need. I still love my main GT30, but this one is quite nice.

According to docs I received from the guy, a new bulb was ordered 2/11. He assumes, but does not know if it would put in. (He said he bought the TV from the original owner 3 - 4 months ago. His wife decided to rearrange/redecorate the room it was going to go in to and there is no longer room for it.) I figure that even if I need to buy a new bulb soon, it is still a steal at $325 + bulb.

Without combing through 100 pages of posts, what are some of the things I should be aware of, look for, do, not do, etc? Just want to make sure I am informed.

Even if your extended warranty says Sony on it, it's not Sony, they sell it to an insurance company, who hires various electronics servicing firms to do the actual work. But your point is correct, Sony should not lend their name and reputation to such dishonest companies.

This does give you a rather tasty option, though. Before they fix your block, contact sonylistens on facebook, or sarah kepler on fb, and see what they will offer you for a replacement TV. I say before they fix it, because you will have to submit a picture of the defect to Sony to get a replacement. You will then have a new LCD flat screen at a good discount, and your rear pro fixed for free by the warranty company. The warranty companies don't talk to Sony, and Sony doesn't ask for your set back.

Keep in mind your replacement optical block may not be perfect out of the box, and it is likely to fail one way or the other in a year or so. I am on my third OB. They never fixed the root cause.

For anyone getting an exchange TV, the EX line IMHO is vastly inferior to the NX line. I went to a local store and looked at them side by side. The EX had the worst contrast of any sets in the store including Samsung, Sharp etc. The NX is however slightly inferior to the the HX line. But not so much as the difference between the EX and NX. I have the NX and very happy with it. Would not be happy with the EX and would be happier with the HX. There... Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it! ;-)

My lemon of a KDS-60A2020 had the ballast replaced 2 years ago, the main board replaced last year and now the green blob is getting bad enough that I decided to contact Sontylistens today. They offered me two replacement tvs; the kdl55bx520 for $575 and the kbl60ex720 for $1375. That seems crazy that I have to pay 2/3 the price of a new tv to replace a tv that is still under warranty. For those of you who had the optical block issue on a tv that is still under warranty did they give you a better replacement offer than those who didn't have a warranty? My warranty is still valid for 5 months so what are my options? Sony used to be such a great name in electronics but I have lost a lot of faith in this company.

It doesn't sound like you have much choice if your bulb went out last week.

Just make sure that the wire leads on the new bulb are tight sothey won't heat up or arc. You should also make sure you clean out any dust or dirt in the bulb compartment....and anywhere else you can get to.

So I've been thinking of getting a sharp 735u but the wife says theirs nothing wrong with the set we have . So while doing research for the 735 I come on here because there was always great info for 2020 on this thread , I read about the green tint problem and low and behold I see my set has it , I guess our eyes had gotten used to it and never really noticed it . So now I'm confused on what to do , do I pay a premium for a set I really want ( sharp 735 ) or do I Go the Sony route and try to get a deal for one of their 60" LCD's ? And then theirs always the re- built OB , which after looking at the pics just plain scares me , lol ... I've always been good at taking things apart , it's the putting it back together part I'm afraid of ..... I have a 32 inch Sony in the bed room I believe it's a Ex500 1080p 120hz , the picture on there is nice and from what I've read there offering the 60ex720 which is basically the same except with 3d ( which I'm reading isn't all that great ) .... What have you guys thought of your replacement sets ??? Thanks in advance for your replys !

I have the 60A2020. I noticed yesterday that I'm getting a lot of fluctuation in the brightness. Almost like a flickering, but obviously not going completely black. It is very noticeable difference in brightness though and continuous. Last night it started as soon as I turned the TV on. Today it was ok for a little bit and then started doing it after maybe 15 minutes.

Could this be my bulb? Part of me hopes so because that's a simple fix, it on the other hand this bulb is maybe a year old and have very low hours on it. I would be a little upset if it was going out this early.

When they are about to go sometimes there is a flicker. Make sure Power Saving is off, in Setup. That may help.

Is it a good OEM lamp? The Chinese knock-off lamps will last a year if you are very lucky.

It was a warranty replacement from the extended warranty, so honestly I don't really know what they gave me. I mean I would assume that its an OEM one. It hasn't done it last night or today so I don't know.

Would like a little help please. I have a KDS-A2020 (55 inch) purchased in April 2007. We started getting the lamp replacement message about 2 years ago and so we picked up a replacement lamp, but we didn't put it in the TV. We figured we'd wait for the original to completely go before replacing. So that happened about a month ago; just complete yellow mush.

I popped out the old lamp, cleaned out the lamp area, and popped the "new" lamp in (which had been sitting it its packaging for 2 years). Originally things looked pretty good, but now we've got some of worst green hue going on. I've messed with the settings but it's either too green or too red. It looks pretty bad.

Bottom line: is this just the lamp? or is the TV at its end and I should be looking at a replacement? Is it worth contacting Sony about?

Ok, my cable was connected using component cables, so I yanked them and put in an HDMI connection. I needed to install the HDMI switchbox I bought 3 months ago to connect the DVD, cable, 360 and PS3, but hey, the wife has been after me to do that for awhile now.

I will say the cable looks better in HDMI, but it's still yellow. People look slightly jaundiced, but they don't look like they're gonna barf. So I guess that's an improvement, but it ain't exactly beautiful yet.

I wrote down my video settings:
Picture Mode = Vivid
Advanced Iris = Auto 1
Picture = Max
Brightness = 55
Color = 55
Hue = R5 (this is the one I've tried to slide back and forth. The green gets really bad faster than the red does)
Color Temp = Cool
Sharpness = 65
Noise Reduction = High

Any other suggestions? Thanks!!

I second that , OB failure . Just to let you know the only 60" they'll offer you is EX720 , you can get an offer for pretty much any 55" set , I received the 55 HX750 for a little over 900 . I've read that there now offering the HX850 ( which I would've got instead , kick rocks Sony lol ) . Either way happy Sony had this program in place , loving my new tv . It's a fairly easy process , I'd say go the Facebook route and contact either Sarah Kepler or Amanda Maffei to help you through it all . Best of luck to you !!

Bummer. Just had to replace a vacuum and have a kid with a broken collar bone that required surgery earlier this year. 2012 is shaping up into a big pile of suck.

So by "go the Facebook" route do you mean that I should just send Sarah Kepler a message? Looks like Amanda has a "worked at Sony" status message so not sure she'd still be able to help.

Hi,

My stepdad got a very late a2020 and recently had its bulb replaced.

I want to calibrate it for him but it's very blue. The normal white balance controls don't have much range to get blue right.

I've seen lots of people mention heavy green or yellow but overstated blue seems odd.

Hi,

I had read about the failures and recalls and checked for distortions last time I was visiting here. Is it possible to still seek a claim for these sets now? I know my stepdad purchased very late and he may still have relevant paperwork.

Thanks, I emailed Sarah Kepler and got an event number. I told my dad about this sets problem last year but last year it was fine.

Again, thanks.

You can contact either one , Sarah is Amanda's supervisor I believe . Her status said that when I contacted her also .

Thanks for the pointer. I chatted with Sarah earlier today via FB. Haven't gotten an event number yet but hoping I get some kind of response from customer support today (I sent an email last night).

Update: Went through the process on the replacement models. I'm going for the KDL55EX720. Appears to be a decent LCD TV. Has some 3D issues, but I'm not getting it for the 3D. Hopefully this will be a good games TV in addition to a solid HDTV.

Thanks to all for the help/pointers!!!

NX is a much better set unless you have glare problems.
