What you like is the most important thing, but you might want to check out the audio section of the forum before going with Bose. Axiom, Klipsch, others, have a better rep with the audio crowd and there is a bit of a feeling that Bose is oversold...

Hi all,
Just got a HLT6187S delivered today from the "river". So far it looks great. I am just in the process of setting it up and have a quick question. Does anyone know the correct code for a Moxi DVR (form Charter cable) for this unit?
Thanks in advance and thanks for all of the great contributions on this thread!

I will try and get the Kit Number. Sammy does NOT list it as a part number, because it is just 'an adjustment' or 'a modification'.

This is what the Sammy repair-fella told me.

I will pay close attention when he brings it for the 'modification'.

same thing here, my tech called me today saying that there is no part # for this so he can't order it directly, he has to open a ticket with samsung first so they will send him the part, he can't order it in without a ticket it seems.

I just replaced an older Samsung DLP with the 5089S, I also just purchased a Panasonic BD30 and have this set with HD Cable and a Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH. My question is, should I set my Panny BD30 to 1080P/24 with this tv or should I just leave it set to "Auto". Also, keep in mind I have 2 small kids who watch a lot of standard Dvd's on this tv as well. This tv is used more for Standard dvds more so than Blu-Ray.
Also, is there anything I need to change on the tv itself re: any of this Thanks in advance

I don't believe that TV will show 24p. Very few TVs actually do. I have a 6189S and was disappointed when I set up my Panny BD30 only to find out that 24p wasn't supported by my TV.

I think you are right, so then what should I set the Panny BD30 to then....Auto?
thanks

I have been reading quite a bit about ppl upgrading there firmware to correct issues with their sets. I have a HLT6187SAX/XAA Version REO1 Manufactured in Mexico NOV 2007 (Purchased TV 1 week ago) and my firmware version MODULE T-LAUIVAUSC-1008 Date 2007-09-19. Version 1008 seems pretty low when I have reading about versions1025 and 1026. Is this maybe because it is a SAX model? I have no HALO issues and the picture is beautiful. The TV speakers are very good and had no issues from what I have read of others. I have DirecTV HD reciever, XBOX Elite and Samsung 1080p upconvert DVD all using HDMI. I use the Fiber Optic out of the TV for surround sound for the Sat reciever and XBOX, the DVD player would not pass through so I use fiber directly from that. If anyone has recently manufactured TV let me know your firmware version or let me know of any issues to look for.

are you sure? I seem to recall plenty of pages back posters being able to use 24p with their PS3 in blueray movies.

I think this depends on your firmware level. I believe 24p support was added in the latest version of the firmware on the xx87S models. I have seen reports of people being able to do this after firmware upgrades.

Hello, Just read the first 50 pages! I picking up a refurbished 6189s next week, and was wondering if there was anything specific I should be looking at to ensure that i get a good one. I will be using this primarily as an HTPC. Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Well first off make sure you turn anynet+ off if you are connecting anything via HDMI that is not a samsung product if you do not have the latest firmware as this can cause problems with your tv menu controls taking on a life of their own.

Second HTPC controls work over the VGA input for the most part if you do not have horizontal and vertical image controls embedded in your video card software.

third inspect that you do not have any bowing at the top of your screen if you do you have one of two options. call a tech to fix the problem or adjust it yourself by firmly holding onto the top corners of the set and apply a little back and forth torque to the chassis as needed to correct the problem.

If you are not going to ISF calibrate your set and want good viewing without a whole lot of effort check these basic tweaks out. ISF can cost 250 or more depending on who does it and how many inputs you are adjusting.

Mode Standard
set your brightness control down to between 25 and 35 if it is in a darker room.
Contrast to 100
Sharpness to 75 seems to work best for HD and SD viewing
Color 55
Color Tone Normal
set your Color Gamut to sRGB
set your Size to Just for pixel for pixel mapping
Digital NR to High takes care of ALOT of image artifacts
I have Black Adjust and Dynamic Contrast set to high with Edge Enhancement in the Detailed Settings

I have had this matched up agasint the LNT5265 at my store and the overall image settings are not that far off from the best that the LCD can put out which is what attracted me to the Samsung in the first place. That and the fact that is makes the A2020 form sony look dull in comparison.

Congrats on the new TV im sure you will enjoy it immensely

I called up Samsung support a week ago to get the fix for the Halo problem and get the screen replaced(I had a few scratches, and what seemed like a mosquito stuck between the 2 screens). I live in NJ.

Save for a few snafus with scheduling their support knew exactly what the problem was and came up with the fix. I had to do no major explanation, just a simple phone call and the fix was in.

Supposedly they got a few thousand of those black washer like items. This fixed the problem and everything looks good. The tech was a good guy to talk to also.

I got the screen swaped, but the new screen had another scratch it. So I am going to get another replacement swap.

I just bought an A30 HD-DVD that does 1080p/24, and my xx87 firmware is 1026. I'm still seeing @60Hz with INFO.

I'm using HDMI and have the HD-DVD set to 1080p/24, so I don't know what else I can do.

I have to force 24hz playback to on in the ps3 settings to get it to work. The info on the TV shows just like the picture someone posted further back, shows 24hz. Just doesn't seem to work worth a crap. So for those where it does work, is 24hz noticably better than 60hz? I see judder in 60 hz sources during the pans, but honestly, your going to see jumps even in 24hz material too. 24hz is easily detectable by eye, I can even see 60hz such as when you have a crt set at too low refresh rate. ...

Are you sure you don't have your A30 set to "up tp 1080p/24" To my knoledge there is no way to force 24fps in the A30 (I have one too) or A35.

HD-DVD - 15
BluRay - 30

There was a format war...Best Buy won, I lost.

It does say "up to 1080p/24." But under the PICTURE MODE option you can change the default from AUTO to FILM. The manual says "pictures recorded from films at 24 frames per second." Unless I'm misunderstanding this, it seems to me that would mean to force 24fps.

Hello, I'm a new member at AVS and also a proud new owner of a Samsung HLT5687S. In my first few weeks of owning this TV, it has been great. HDTV and video games all look great. However, I am encountering problems when trying to use the TV as a PC monitor.

I am trying to output my Dell Inspiron 700m laptop to the Samsung TV using a standard VGA cable. The laptop has no problems outputting to any regular computer monitor and the VGA cable is new and in working condition. Whenever I connect the laptop and TV together using the VGA cable, the TV still does not recognize the PC as being a valid input source. Instead, the "PC" stays greyed out among my input options.

I have tried everything, including outputting the laptop at different resolutions (as low as 1024x768 and as high as 1920x1200) and at different frequencies. Unfortunately, my laptop does not support 1920x1080 resolution, but it does support a lot of other resolutions below that and I am fine with outputting *any* resolution to the TV at this point.

What could be wrong? Why isn't my TV recognizing a signal from the PC?

For the other inputs, such as HDMI, S-Video, Component, the devices hooked up to those jacks don't even have to be turned on for the TV to recognize that there is a possible input from those sources (and thus, those sources are selectable under my input options). The PC input still being greyed out and skipped over as I toggled through the inputs perturbs me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I will be able to figure this out on my own before resorting to calling a Samsung service tech to come to my home. Thanks!

As a follow-up to my original post from yesterday, I was able to successfully output my laptop with no problems to a 50" plasma display manufactured by Dell. It was just plug and play. Plugged one end of the VGA cable into my laptop and the other into the VGA port on the plasma. Selected "VGA" as source for the plasma, toggled the display setting on my laptop, and wallah, 1024x768 showed up on the display. From there, I could change to various resolutions.

Shouldn't the Samsung HLT5687S work the same way?

Does anyone know of the PC input port having problems and needing to be replaced?

Can someone call Samsung and see if the HLT6187 supports 24fps and what firmware do you need to have. I know under the setup menu on the tv there is a FILM MODE option. Does anybody know what this is?

Congrats on finally getting your replacement set and for getting rid of the halo.

Here are the differences (that I can remember) that I have read about in this thread between new hlt-XX87SAX and older hlt-XX87SX/XXA:

SAX:
1) Made in U.S.A.
2) Major component in back rear relocated for easier service access.
3) New firmware series ?? I think someone reported version 1008 ??

I'm sure we will learn more as more new SAX owners post.

I just bought the SAX one yesterday on amazon. It should get here next week, so let me know what I can do to help you guys with your research. I'm a tv nub so you'll have to explain for me what to do in detail.

Long time reader of this thread, first time poster. Lots of great information here, this website is wonderful.

I took delivery of a HLT5687SX/XAA mid October. I immediately noticed the halo prism with dark scenes, espeicially watching DVD with letterbox. It looks like the issue has been solved by others with having the "diffuser kit" installed, by replacing the shiny ring with a black one.

Samsung tech just left, and he is going to actually replace the whole light engine assembly. I told him about just getting the "diffuser kit" and to just replace the ring, but he is insistant on getting a new assembly and just replacing it as a whole unit. Supposedly the new light engine will already have the black ring installed. He said we could just take a black marker tonight and paint it, but it would eventually have the same issue as he said the light assembly gets very hot.

So, they will be calling me once they get the new light engine. If I can get this fixed, I will be very happy with the set. I do have the latest firmware, as the TV shipped with it.

Also, 2 Samsung techs were over. one of them had to go to the bathroom, but I only have one bathroom. My wife was in the shower, he went outside for about 3 minutes and came back inside. My wife was out of the shower and I asked him if he needed to use the restroom, and he said no with a smirk on his face??? Did he piss in a bottle in the Samsung van or on my flowers? You make the decision LOL

I certainly don't believe that the HLT sets work for 1080p/24hz, no matter what the firmware is including 1026 when attempted with Toshiba HD players that output 1080p/24hz.

I know because I tried it with my set and only speaking when used with Toshiba HD player A30.
