Ken,

The Fry's up the steet has a 50" and 56" on the show floor. Unfortunatley for the 56" they only have the store video stream showing and it looks very compressed, plus that set looked very green. The 50" had something hooked up to an HDMI input as I was able to swicth to a discovery HD source.

If I went by what the TVs on most showrooms have shown me (including the high end stores), I'd still have a 5" black and white tube.

Another thing about the 89 that kinda irks me is that you when you hit the 'still' button a window pops up asking if you want to print it via bluetooth, but it doesn't let you save it to a connected USB stick. That would have been nice. Not sure why they didn't allow that either.

Most likely it's because of copyright issues. My guess would be the networks don't want digital copies, even if they're stills, floating around. Just a guess though.

Thanks Jeff. Thanks Phil.

Hey Phil? You still have your HLM-507W? I just had a new colorwheel and lamp put in just before my 4 yr. warranty dried up. Still a nice picture!

That and my Krell amp are the best AV buys I've ever made.

I considered the 5679 but found the blacks lacking and the center stripe too pronounced. The non-LED models won't do because I've developed a sensitivity to RBE.

I'll have to check out this new model. I'm leaning toward plasma though for an upgrade if I get the chance.

I just got my HLT5689s today. It replaces my HLP4663. Wow what a difference hehe. So i put it on movie mode with warm1, turned off DNIe, and put it on sRGB. Any other suggestions? Do people turn on the dynamic contrast ratio? My PS3 works great at 1080p. But when I set up my 360 to 1080p i get these little white dots all over the screen. At 1080i is works fine though. Is this a problem with the component cables?

Maybe a nice 65" 1080p Panasonic plasma with it's "special" stand.

Yep. After 4 1/2 years it's getting a little long in the tooth, though.

For those of you who think the current RPTVs look washed out with poor contrast and gray blacks you ought to try to find one of the HLM or HLN models. Mine measured 1000:1 (that's correct one thousand to one) CR after it was calibrated. Still, it was good in it's day plus I had lots of fun figuring out how to tweak it for optimum performance. Learned a lot about video and color from it.

I'm starting to get the itch for an upgrade and I'm expecting big things from the HLT LEDs. I also think that Samsung's industrial designers are getting better at creating nice cabinets. Thank God they got rid of the silver cabinet.

I believe that white little dots all over is that some of the bits (0 or 1) being sent digitally acroos your cable are getting lost and digital doesn't have any error correction so it won't compensate.

Most likely try another set of cables to see if yours is damaged or has a bent pin or something. Also can the 360 even do 1080P? if not that could be a problem. I thought it did 1080i but i might be wrong.

I'm also thinking if your cable isn't capable of handling the badnwith of the data being pushed through it, then you might loose some bits and might get white dots. Reason why I went with 1.3 HDMI cables to ensure in the future that the cables can handle the full bandwith of whatever the PS3 pushes through.

I know the 360 doesn't use HDMI but perhaps the cable isn't able to handle the bandwith if its not broken.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't plunk down cash for my 507W's black level today - not to mention banding on pans, etc...

I'm going to go to Fry's today after work and check them out. I do like the fast startup of the LED sets.

You know Phil, if you jumped on a HLT fast enough, then Jeff would have to come calibrate it for free.

HT,

What's the "special" stand? I'm watching the 65" Panny and the Pio FHD1,the upcoming super contrast Pio as well as the upcoming Sammy 63".

Ken

In these parts they want $1,299 (MSRP) for the attached table top stand, and they are asking the full MSRP ($9,999.99 ) for the set.

Way back when you first got your HLM, I was shopping between the HLM and the 52" Panasonic DLP. At that time the Panasonic DLP was designed to look very strange if you didn't get the matching stand. I understood that there was almost no mark up on the $500 stand so it was really a "special" stand to increase the Panasonic price. That's how the stand for the 65" 1080p Panasonic strikes me.

Give yourself two hours and a tape measure and go around to some of the big box electronics stores. Those places are often willing to part with nice stands on display that have the barest of sratches or are going out of stock.

'These displays' meaning both the 87S and 89S series? Your unclear antecedent is going to send me into premature happy mode if the 87S doesn't have 1.3 as well.

I think the "special stand" he's talking about is the "bargain priced" pedestal stand for the Panny 65" itself not a regular stand like a Bello, Tech Craft, BDI, Salamander etc. Since both the industrial and consumer model Panny 65" do not come with speakers or stand.

That comment was based on a drawing for the 89 series. The 87 series uses a MST3369M. This appears to be an older Samsung part. It may not support 1.3.

I just recieved my 5689S and they took away my 5679W. The size difference in the housing is incredible. much happier w/ the housing of this one. I set the settings to Studio's settings per Eliab. picture is significantly brighter then my old set. I see more"noise" i guess, assuming this is from lack of calibration. Its the only thing that bothers me so far. Blacks are definitely better as the colors are definitely sharper and more fine. If anyone in orlando wants to run me as a guinea pig for calibration by all means.... I am a little worried that it may not be able to be calibrated as well as the last set from what i'm reading about the service menu.

That puts me at ease a bit thank you! I'm going to have to find a copy of DVE(HD-DVD). get the picutre tuned in a little... I've used AVIA in the past and the want you to use Colored lens. are these lenses anything like the red and blue film from "3d" glasses that we used to pull from childrens books? or will i not have to use them for DVE?

Can you confirm what versions of HDMI the MST3369M DOES support? There is still some confusion as to whether it is 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2...

The color filters are generally useless with this type of technology. It only works well when the primaries are the actual primaries being displayed. These sets have a natural gamut way outside of what is normal. More complex instrumentation is required. I am looking at a $20,000 instrument next week that can probably deal with this.

Meaning calibration won't be a problem, or holding the calibrated settings won't be a problem? I'm much more concerned about the latter (I have no doubt that the pros here including yourself will not have issue making these sets look 'right'). I suspect you aren't worried as much either way. I'll be willing to sign up for 'regular tuneups', as long as I get a special little card that you hole punch each time so the fifth one is free.

I have no idea if these units will hold a calibration. If you go back in the thread quoted I was the one who provided the data and discussed possible problems with this technology. I am not personally rushing out to buy one at this point when UHP lamps work just fine except for some RBE.

from what i understand your not supposed to see RBE w/ these LED sets. I think i am seeing them. I have a scene paused on Smallville in HD where theres a dark setting w/ light peering through the window and i had to go back cause i moved my eyes away for a sec because i thought i saw Red green and blue where the windows are, sure enough went back paused any quick eye movement on these windows and really bright red green and blue.... i NEVER saw this on the 5679 EVER. Not sure if this qualifies as rainbow effect, but its definitely not something i welcome....

Well, I received my HL-T5689S yesterday. I spent the next few hours setting up and was very happy with the picture until I noticed something on the bottom of the screen. It looks like streaking and it goes across the bottom of the screen on the inside. I only noticed it when I put up a light colored image that took up the entire screen. Here it is.

So i hooked up my PS3 with some component cables and set it 1080p, got white dots on it as well. So neither my PS3 or Xbox 360 will work at 1080p with Component on this set so far. The PS3 works fine with HDMI at 1080P though. Anyone else using a 360 at 1080p on this set (360 at 1080i is fine)?

That's right.

I miss remembered the price of the attached table top stand. It's a cool $1,299 right down town.

What a deal.

With the Panasonic 1080p 65" plasma that would be something else you would need in addition to the flat panel and it's "special" table top stand.
