I just accepted delivery of my HL-T6189S about 5 minutes ago.

Once my wife gets home (she has my digital camera right now), I'll unbox it and try to post some pics.

I'll run it through Avia and DVE tonight and see how it looks. I'll report my findings and opinions.

I just ordered my HL-T5089 TV. I have one question, it has the HDMI 1.3, so can I connect my regular HDMI DVD player that isnt 1.3 to this tv with the same cable or does it require a different cable and/or connector ??

I heard they have the same pin settings, I wasnt sure.

(Note: I screwed up earlier and posted my initial impressions in the wrong thread. I cut and pasted it here again).

I find myself in the strange position of being one of the few members that actually has an HL-T6189S model in front of them. I just got it this morning.

I have a 9" CRT projector in my basement, and that's my main hobby focus (no pun intended). We got the Samsung for everyday TV viewing in the upstairs family room.

I ordered it 5 days ago thru that "large river" site that was linked to one of it's partners. The price was too good to pass up because it was less than "87S" models I had seen. I figured I would order it and maybe get a raincheck for the great price, because I didn't believe they would actually have it in stock. Well it arrived 2 days ago (Texas to Ohio) when I wasn't here. Next, I figured it would be the wrong model, but no - this is a real HL-T6189S.

Without going into a lot of detail (because I haven't played with it a lot yet), my initial reaction is that I'm really blown away with this thing. I find the picture to be drop dead beautiful. I seem to have plently of brightness and contrast range. Right now it is set to movie mode with brightness at 45% and contrast at 85%. It is setting in a room with tons of anbient light and it is plenty bright enough. The image is smooth, with no visible pixels.

It is so much nicer than I expected it to be. So far I am a happy camper.

Here's a screenshot from a 1080i DVHS tape of Starship Troopers using the HDMI 1.3 connection:

The older cables should work. There is a new connector defined in the specs for HDMI 1.3, but I haven't read anything about it being used yet. When it is used in the future, you will be able to use an adaptor with old HDMI cables or buy a cable with the old connector on one end and the new connector on the other end.

When the new HDMI 1.3 bandwidth demands starts being used (far in the future) then a cable certified for HDMI 1.3 might be needed.

There is a company selling HDMI 1.3 cable now for $159.00 a meter.

Do you have the means to output that overscan pattern as a 1080i or 1080p signal?

If so, could you possibly take a shot of the overscan present with 1080i/1080p input in "Just Scan" and "16:9" modes so we can compare the differences between the two?

If you have a DVR and access to Hdnet, you may also want to record their Sunday 6:50am EST test signal, which includes several high-definition test patterns, including one for resolution and overscan. Of course, the actual resolution you get will depend on your cable / satellite provider.

The 4:3 pic doesn't seem to be bowing much. It's going to be very difficult for me not order this set now. I need to wait until after the current TV season is over, then I can sell my HLR and get the HLT then hopefully schedule a calibration of the HLT set for later in the Summer.

What do you mean Gurn? Do you plan on buying the hls anyway? I just got my hls61 a couple of days ago, but I'm still awaiting thoughts on the new led sets. But I can imagine that you may get even greater deals on the s-series now.

Someone wanted help today concerning a set at Costco. It was a HL-R model from 2005. The selection will not be very good but there should still be some available for some time.

God you know i really want the 89S, but i dont think i can make the purchase knowing that its still stuck at 60hz while the new SXRDs coming this summer are 120hz. Just watching the judder on the opening scene of ice age on the samsungs drives me crazy, it looks like a stop motion gag.

According to the specifications the LED "87" and "89" models have a 120Hz refresh rate (Video Display Rate 120Hz). That doesn't mean Samsung or Sony will solve the judder issue this year.

There are links to the spec sheets in the first post of this thread. The refresh rate is shown under "Specifications" in the fourth page of the documents at Samsung's web site.

went to the local BB and they had no idea. Gave them the model number for both the 87 and 89 and nothing came up in their computer system.

wow really? if you go to samsungs website and look at the specs of the TV it says 1080P@60hz while the Sony will do 1080p@120hz. but if the samsung does do 1080p@120hz i think i might get it.

Refresh rate alone will not get rid of judder.

Among other things the TV must accept a 1080p@24Hz input signal. Then it must multiply by five instead of converting the signal to 60Hz. Of course there must also be a 1080p@24Hz source.

As far as I know, these are all still unknowns as far as the Sony and Samsung 2007 models are concerned.

Wooo HOOOO!

Thanks for the pictures, guys. Looks nice...much better than the 5679 cabinet shape of last year.

Now we need overscan shots with the "Just" setting enabled. A pc hooked up at 1080 or 720 just to check overscan....360 hooked up just to drool over...and ps3 blu ray shots. =)

gimme gimme gimme...I have been waiting to check this set out for months. I am losing control. lol

hubbabubba,

I'm considering getting the HL-S6767W if Costco continues to sell it for a while, but I would really like to see the price drop back to $2499. I really like the 67" size, and the new LEDs won't be available in larger than 61" for some time. I would have pulled the trigger already, but I got hit with some unexpected home repair bills, so I may find myself waiting to see how the HLT fares.

htwaits, are you saying that you think that Costco will continue to sell this model for a while to come? I hope so: everyone raves about it's picture quality.

I may be the only one, but having a light like that is a little distracting. I know it is for some of the plasmas that i have seen in the store.

I'm probably just trying to find any reasons to justify keeping me 3 day old 6187!
