First-time poster, hope that this question doesn't sound too ridiculous, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

I have a Sony FD Trinitron Wega, Model Number KV-34HS42ON.

There are four screen modes that can be set: Wide Zoom, Normal, Full and Zoom.

I have tried watching movies, regular TV shows and sports on all of the settings and none of them seem 100% correct.

The Normal setting puts black bars on the left and right sides. The Full setting very visibly elongates everything, especially the people. Both the Wide Zoom and the Zoom seem to "leave out" part of the picture.

Is there a "correct" setting for various situations? TIA

What is your source for video (DVD, antenna, cable box, etc.)?
How are the external sources connected... cable types (component, HDMI, composite, etc.)?

Video source is cable box.

Uh...I'm not sure what kind of cables they are. How can that be related to the choice of which screen mode to use?

It makes a difference depending upon whether your video source is 16:9 or 4:3.

HTH.

1) cable box needs to be "HD" capable for correct aspect ratios.
2) you need to use component cables (red/green/blue) or HDMI for HD and 16:9 aspect ratio.

Note: if the "programming" is not HD, then 4:3 is what it is (black bars)...
What is the make/model of the cable box?
