So a couple weeks ago my monitor started having periodic flashes where it seems to lose its sync for an instant. Today it started doing this thing where the picture shakes and shrinks while losing focus for a moment. It will go through a spell where it does it for about 5 minutes and then it stops, then again sometime later. It seems like it's dying.

The thing that bugs me though, is that otherwise the picture looks great. Colors are still great, and sharpness is till perfect (besides when it is acting up). Does anybody know what exactly is failing? Are there any adjustments I could make to the flyback to get a few more months out of this thing?

I even read somewhere that stuff like this can be caused by bad solder joints. Should I go in and look around for some bad solder spots?

if few months is all u need, am sure u can find a monitor nearby for almost nothing. I mean I gave mine to recycling 'cause I couldn't get anybody to take it away for $10!

The reason I want to fix this monitor is because it's so nice. It's a photo-quality trinitron, no generic monitor is going to look as good. That said I have been keeping an eye on craigslist, but nothing is popping up.

If it's intermittent, you probably have bad solders or some bad connection. If you are not a tech or don't know how to solder, a tech should be able to repair it for less than 50$. Possible causes are bad solders on horizontal output transformer or on power supply. Could also be the flyback going bad, but that is very rare.
