OFF TOPIC!

Could you just start another thread if you want to discuss other issues. This thread is for breaking news about availability of the XBR910.

It's not a big deal, but kind of annoying to be subscribed to a thread and get emails about updates to the thread that have nothing to do with the thread you originally subscribed to.

I'm not trying to flame anyone, but there could be other people that might take interest in your topic that are missing it because it's not in an appropriate thread.

Thank you.

Hi Def did they have any date? and I am wondering if anyone has heard
any info on the "30. I don't think it is even available in the HS line yet.
I do not think anyone has really seen the XBR910 (at least no credible
post here) as far as imperfections sure everything has some sort of glitch
what I find most interesting is how tight Sony is keeping any info from
getting out good or bad- no pre sales hype whatsoever.

I don't think asking why an expensive crt doesn't have 720p is "off topic". I suggest you turn off email notification if you don't want to be bothered.

I think this thread is just naturally turning into a thread that discusses the actual TV itself. Would be kind of boring to read only 'is it out yet?' all the time.

Could the rumors about the aperture grill lines being more visible possibly be attributed to the reason grey bars are being used instead of black? That the set is needed to be turned brighter due to the vertical slits? I know I have always been able to see the aperture grill lines better when the brightness is cranked up.

What lines? That's just fuel for the rumor mill. The Moderator shut down that thread because it's bunk. There's been absolutely no creditable demo of the 910's.

Well the 910 uses a Trinitron (aperture grill) CRT ... and all aperture grill CRTs are going to have visible support wires ... no rumor there ... that's fact.

Now, the suggestion that those support wires are MORE visible then on previous sets ... that hasn't been shown and that was why the thread was shut down.

Unlikely. My current set, a Hitachi RPTV 43", has the option to view black or gray bars, with the recommendation to use gray bars as they result in less burn in.

It's probable they want to limit the # of burn in problems/returns by only allowing the option that's least likely to burn in.

Yes ... it would all be consistent. All things being equal, increasing resolution capabilities of a CRT reduces light output. To compensate certain settings could be tweaked to give the same amount of light output ... but with the side-affect of increasing burn-in risk and making the support wires more noticeable. To compensate again, the default for the side-bars could be changed from dark gray to a more neutral gray (they were adjustable via service menu in the XBR800).

There were a few posts discussing this here (before things degraded into a my set / your set p*ssing contest):
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...76#post2418076

Note, I haven't seen the set and don't claim to know if it has thin wires, thick wires, black bars, gray bars, purple polka dot bars or 2 ft. thick support cables protruding from the screen. Just saying all the above is consistent with CRT technology, aperture grills, and increasing the number of slits on an aperture grill.

Also note the 'all things being equal'. I'm sure Sony continues to evolve its CRTs in many ways.

I stopped by my local Sony Store after work today, and inquired about the 910, as i have been doing every few weeks fdor the last while now.

Today they had some news for me, and that was the listing price. The guy looked it up on the system and told me it would be $3999 here in Canada.

I'm sure most Canadians here already had an idea that this would be the cost, but what i noticed most about this is that the TV is in their system now, meaning they can acknowledge that they sell the 910.

It's getting closer...

Well, I did my weekly Sony chat and got this response from Dan at SonyStyle:
David: Thanks. Do you know when it will be available for purchase?
Dan: Very soon in about 4 days time

Let's hope he's correct!

Is this the 34", or the 30" (30XBR910)?

Here is the latest online chat with a rep on the Sony Style site...

Discussion Thread
---------------------------------------------------------------
Chat Transcript - 08/03/2003 12:32 PM
User Name: Ben Friedman
E-mail: ben@ben.org
=======================
Ben: Hi Daniel. Question about availability for a tv.
Ben: KV-34XBR910
Daniel: This Television would be available later this month.
Ben: how certain are you of this?
Ben: I spoke with a rep two weeks ago (online) that said it would be available by end off July.
Ben: And the press release that Sony issued for the TV said it would be available in July.
Daniel: Yes, we just received an update..
Daniel: Yes, I understand..
Daniel: There has been a delay..
Ben: do you know what caused the delay? (curious)
Daniel: Ben, I have no information regarding this online..
Daniel: I appreciate your interest.
Daniel: I suggest you check back later..
Ben: ok. I understand...anything else you can share?
Ben: when you say later this month, does that mean the END of the month?
Daniel: I am afraid a specific date has not been released..
Ben: But the update definitely says THIS month?
Ben: sorry so full of doubt, but I Sony has already changed their minds once on this date and trying to ascertain if it is likely to happen again.
Daniel: Yes, it would be available this month.
Ben: ok, I will let you off the hook for now
Ben: (and take what you say with a grain of salt) :-)
Ben: should I check back in a week? or would that be too soon?
Daniel: Yes, that would be a good time..
Ben: one last question...have you been able to see this set yourself or talk to anyone that has?
Daniel: I am afraid not.
Daniel: We have seen only the online images.
Ben: ok
Ben: thanks Daniel
Ben: disconnected
Daniel: disconnected

I think the one in Fairfax, VA is. The salesperson told me that they have several pre-orders for the 30XBR910, and the price is $2000. I didn't order one because I'm still deciding between the 30XBR910 and the 32HV600.

This was meant to be a reply to Scott G.'s post.

Better question is how good satellite or digital cable looks on this TV. Presumably, it'll have the same adjustable DRC or the ability to turn off the DRC like the XBR800s.

Also would be curious if the stretch modes are any different than last year.

Not sure if this has been posted before, but just saw that Crutchfield has the 34XBR910 loaded on their site. Great close-up pictures. Expected in-stock date is 8/22.

The August date seems to fall in line with what they did with the KD-34XBR2 two years ago. It was slated for a July release, but I wasn't able to actually purchase one until 20 Aug.

Not entirely correct about the KD-34XBR2. It was scheduled for Fall, 2001. It came out in late July/Early August. I bought one on August 5.
