My projector was flawless for 9 months.I fired up the projector last night and the lumens were probably less than half than the day before.I was using theater mode 2 before.I bumped it up to Dynamic and raised contrast to the max and I still get a very dark picture. If it is a bad bulb would it drop dramatically like this overnight? If not,What is the cause?I will call Customer Service on Monday.I know they will not cover the bulb.It has 1000 hours in 9 months.Hopefully,It is something else and the warranty will cover it.If anybody else has had this expereience,Let Me know how it ended up. Thanks

The bulb on my 6100 fried last night, only had 753 hours. Epson is sending a new one tomorrow and I will have on Wednesday. Great customer service.

Does anyone know if the firmware on the HC6100 can be updated by the consumer?

I can get this 6100 unit from a forum sponsor for the same price as the optoma hd20 or 300 more than the 705hd. The 6100 is better for me in every way, but could some of you actual owners give me a vote of confidence considering I would get the 2 year warranty on the pj and, I assume, the same lamp support you guys are getting. I just don't want to purchase a pj for which I have to replace the lamp out of pocket without getting around 3000 hours out of the lamp if I treat it right.

just bought a refurbed 6100 and i cant decide on a screen material. Because my room is small ~10 throw at best, the largest screen i can comfortably go with is 90" but i will probably go with 80". Ive already done the measurements so this aspect is set. My room has beige walls and white celing, though i can pain the wall the screen will be attached to black. viewing distance will be about 10.5-11 feet. Im not sure what determines ambient light? I only plan on using it for movies, at night. There is a window in my room facing the street. There are no street lights outside so the only light entering the room would come from my neighbors houses across the street. I have blinds which I can close too. Its pretty much pitch black at night with all lights off and blinds closed.

Im debating a matte white or high contrast gray? I have small budget for screen, im looking at either the 85" focupix screens and maybe the 95" versions...though im afraid that will be too big considering im only sitting ~10.5 feet away.

http://www.htdepot.com/category_s/91.htm

main thing for me is NOT noticing the black bars for 2.35:1 movies. If this will be a problem I might just go with a 2.35:1 screen where I can make it so the black bars on blu-rays will project on bars of velvet above and below the screen.

oh and the screen will be directly across from the window, so the back of my head would be facing the window...if it matters.

The HDMI 1 and Trigger output on my 6100 projector is not working. Epson is sending me a replacement projector but it is the 8100 model because they have no more 6100 projectors in stock. I am debating whether or not to get the 6100 fixed by sending it to the Epson repair center or keep the 8100 projector. My 6100 is in pristine condition and only about 200 hours on the lamp bulb. The HDMI 2 output is working fine. On the other hand, I will be receiving a refurbish 8100 projector. So, this is an upgrade from the 6100, and will have a new bulb and comes with a 2 yr warranty. But I have heard horrible stories about these refurbish units. I requested a pristine, like new 8100 projector. So, if you were in my position, what would you do? Please advise.

from what ive read the 8100 is not really THAT big an upgrade. If your 6100 is in fact in otherwise pristine condition I would opt to get the 6100 fixed. But, who knows, maybe it will get damaged during shipping back to you? Your choice. Do what your gut tells you to.

My 6100 is back to losing focus so I'll have to give them a call tomorrow for replacement 3. Hopefully they will offer a 8100 since I see they fixed that problem.

No luck - the guy went and checked and said they had four left in stock. Warranty until May and I'm pretty sure the next one will lose focus before then... Love this thing, but getting tired of going 10' in the air twice each time I use it.

Here's my experience with the HC6100..

1. Purchased from BB on 2/8/09
2. 6/1/10 HDMI1 stops working
3. 8/1/10 HDMI2 stops working
4. 9/1/10 Call Epson and they send a refurb unit to replace my unit.
5. They forgot to include shipping labels with the refurb..So I have to pay shipping costs.. To compensate me, they send me an extra bulb. **
6. Warranty expires a few months later
7. Refurb unit has de-focusing issue.
8. Refurb unit develops a red band across the top of the image.
9. Refurb unit develops a blue tint across the bottom of image.
10. Refurb unit bulb melts at 1500 hours.
11. Find out that the "extra" bulb they sent me (in #5) was for a 6100i not hc6100.
12. Have to call Epson for the correct replacement bulb.
13. Replacement bulb arrives. The added brightness make the red/blue bands even more annoying.
14. Call Epson a few days later and seriously complain about the poor quality of these projectors.
15. Epson agrees to send 1 more replacement unit (a refurb hc6100) and mentions that this is a one time favor that they're doing me since I'm 4 months out of warranty.
16. Got the refurb.. Seems to be in great condition.. Sharp picture and so far it maintains focus....Though, that's how my original unit began it's short life.

After all this I can say that I am NOT impressed with the quality of the HC6100. On the other hand, their customer service is TOP NOTCH. They went above and beyond to correct the issues....even after my warranty had expired. So it has been a good and a bad experience.

You are lucky - at least they sent you a replacement unit for your out-of-warranty projector. My HC6100 also developed a banding issue across the top after it was about 4 months out of warranty (and only 6 months old, since it was a replacement for another issue I had with my original 6100). Espon Customer Service told me I had to take it to a service center and pay for the repairs myself. The estimate to fix it was an insane $2100 (to replace the "optical engine"), so I bought a new 8700UB instead (it was the same price).

I'm going after Epson for this. Same issue, green banding at the top, red at the bottom. There's only 1366 hours on the pj, I'm the original owner and had the unit for 30 months (6 months out of the warranty. Epson is reviewing my case right now. Here's what I sent them:

Model: PowerLite Home Cinema 6100

Original owner, only 30 months of troublefree operation in a dedicated room, T stable at 20C / 68F, filter cleaned regularly, well ventilated (hanging from the ceiling).

That's exactly what happened to mine at 800 hours. Those panels and polarizers just aren't meant to last. Epson always exchanged mine, but still - it's a defect and it's going to happen anyway. My conditions were ideal, too... still happened.

Go after them - it's not fair.

Thanks Tommy.

So what exactly is the part causing problem? Panels and polarizers? Is this something you have changed yourself?

You say Epson always exchanged yours. Is that so even after warranty expired? Do you still own the pj?

To make a long story short - I've had so many problems with Epson's tragic QC that they actually paid me off and took the projector back after almost 2 years. The less said about my experience, the better.

That being said, don't forget that if you buy your PJ new, most major credit cards add another year of warranty. That's 3 years total in the case of an Epson - pretty comfortable length of time, I'd say. I wouldn't buy one of these things used. Don't laugh, but in the span of 13 months I got and returned 16(!) Epson PJs all due to awful convergence, panel defects, noisy fans, etc.

So question---does projector bulb "wear" out over time. I got this projector from my brother in law. It was in his bar for about a year and has over 4000 hours on the bulb. I think the picture is pretty good through HDMI, but not sure if it can get better. Like many, if it is good now---will be a new bulb make it great? Thanks!

Long time lurker but finally just registered.
