I would also like a PM on the DIY painted screen. I have an old 106 pulldown that has a nasty scratch and I have been watching my HD20 on my light brown wall. I am seriously considering sanding and painting it but have NO idea where to start.

Try getting a block of black felt and mounting it to the ceiling above the projector. It is great for absorbing light. I have my ceiling painted black so the felt blends in nicely and you don't even notice it. I did it primarily because it bugged me seeing the light bouncing off the ceiling. I don't think it really caused any contract issues, it was just me being OCD I guess.

FYI - paint I'm using now is CIL ultra matte colour code 00/NN 53/000

Before that I used a lighter shade 00/NN 62/000

I've used eggshell successfully too. No magical additives either.

Good info here minus the added poly

Woot has their deal going on for the projector again. I wonder if we will get any new people in the thread today.

OK got to ask this, cause I want to get the best and keep the best going out of the HD20.
Do I need to clean it on a regular basis? ...and if so how?

I have mine ceiling mounted, so I don't have the cap on the lens (at all) now is this good or bad? and should the lens be cleaned at times? worried about smugging it...

Wow, that was quick. Were they selling both, or just selling you whatever they had since they're the same projector? When I bought mine from Woot, it came in the HD180 box.

I also need to paint my wall. And the rest of the room. And the rest of the house. I've lived in my house for two years and have yet to paint anything (except for the walls I put holes through when running cables).

How is this projector for gaming? The HD66 is describes as "for gaming" and it brighter but not 1080p. I was going to get a hmz-t1 but I just roughly measured what a 100" screen would look like in my room and I think i know what I want.

I used mine mostly for gaming and movies....hockey of course...and I have absolutely no complaints....I have mine set on the lower brightness setting cause at times it's actually to bright!!

I too use mine for a lot of gaming. I currently have the 360 and PS3 on the HD20. Often a projector with high lumens will say "gaming" in marketing because they assume it will be used in a living room setup with a lot of uncontrollable ambient light.

If you have total light control and don't mind playing games in the dark, then you will love the HD20 for gaming and movies.

For people wanting it brighter...

As long as you have dark walls, a Da-Lite High Power screen would give quite a bit of gain with this projector and not hurt the image, since this projector only has a 7.8% offset of the 16:9 diagonal. HP screens are very low in price for pulldowns for smaller ones (sub 120").

Floor mounted with an HP, you could get 1.8 to 2.0 gain. Ceiling mounted, probably around 1.5 gain, depending on how high you have your screen and what not.

Same here. Multi use for this bad boy. Lighting is no problem as long as It's behind the projector ie. Pot lights vs regular ceiling light.

Because pot light cast light down, we can have then on full output without any real problem. Great for gaming and sports.

At no time can I have my other ceiling light on without washing out the picture.

I have pot lights in basements...with the exception of one....with two switches...front and back. I will only turn on the back one when we play cards and have the HD20 on a hockey/football game with no issues....

Picked up a HD20 over the weekend from Bestbuy for 800 bucks opened box. Got it home and it only had 1 hour on it. Heck of a deal. I am using it on a gray wall for the time being in a detectaed room. I am really happy with it so far. Every one that has seen it thinks it looks great. I can't wait to get my screen with built in masking to see how this thing really looks. The gray wall is just primer at the moment and just one coat lol Really can see how bad your wall and paint job is. Screen is going to end up being as much as the projector. So far watched some tv, blu-rays and played some xbox on it. Motion is great, didn't notice and input lag. I was going to pick up a beng w6000 or hc4000. But good deal on this and I'm happy with it. Looks alot better then what the reviews seam to make it. Now I got my friend on the preorder list for the JVC RS45 and I'm sure once I see the blacks on that I'm going to cry. But I think I'll like the shaper picture of the DLP better but we will see. The only thing I really don't like about it is how loud it is. Even my wife was like if this thing gets and louder like an xbox 360 were getting a difrent one lol. Once the movie starts I don't notice it any more even in quite sceens.

Has anyone here ever sent their HD20 in for an out of warranty repair for the flashing issue? I am getting ready to send mine off. It requires $110 up front, I was just wondering if I can expect to have to pay more or if $110 would cover it. I know their is no way to tell until I send it off, just trying to hear from others first.

I have a question about component cables used with the HD20.. I am needing a 50 ft component cable and was seeing if anyone could suggest a quality one. I just bought one off of amazon and it ended up being horrible in quality.

Monoprice. Good quality, great price, you can buy in bulk. I use all monoprice cables in my setup.

Cost. I hate to say it... but $800 isn't really a great deal. I bought my HD20 almost 2 years ago from Costco for only $850 new with the extended Costco warranty. Costco currently sells the HD180 for $899.

As for the "noise". I am shocked. The HD20 is one of the quietest projectors around. Even with my sound system off, my xbox 360 is louder by far. So is my PS3. And both are newer gens. Is your HD20 ceiling mounted? And do you have the bulb setting on low? Having the bulb on high makes the fan way louder. And not ceiling mounted makes it closer to you. If you hate the HD20 fan noise, be glad you didn't get many other projectors.

Even if my HD20 is the only thing on in the entire room and I am sitting near it, it's barely audible and I have excellent hearing in case you think I am going deft. And of course if a movie or game is on, I don't hear it at all with any volume level.

But my PS3 and xbox 360 are louder. Again, they are not the oldest or newest gen units. So it's possible the latest gen 360 and PS3 are quieter. Check your bulb setting. Turn AI off and set bulb to low.

So cleaning is mainly to keep the bulb exterior clear to keep it cooling correctly. Though if you are not overzealous, basic cleaning doesn't really hurt. In Oregon dust is low. And I never cleaned my constantly open air HD70 for the 3 years I had it. And zero issues. I now live in dusty Arizona and I still haven't cleaned my HD20 which is almost 2 years old now. And I don't plan on cleaning it. If you are not a smoker, I would say you will be fine. And if you are a smoker, basic air cleaning won't really do you any good anyways as the film created would need more than air.

It's ceiling mounted. I have the bulb on low with AI turned off. It's still pretty loud to me. It's at the top of a 8 foot ceiling. Like I said once the movie is going it doesn't bother me really. Can't wait to get my screen to go with this. Even though the screen will be as much as I paid for the projector lol
