I just picked this up from best buy last week. I was looking fo the HD65 or 66 and this is all they had. it appears to be a variation of the HD66 with 3D.

I just realized there isnt a zoom on this projector but the throw ratio is crazy. I could get a 54x96 image from only 6 feet away.

I will post pics and screenshots later.

It's primarily geared towards gamers. It's a short focus DLP with a built in speaker. The short focus is important because for a game like the Wii, you're in front of most projectors and you'd be blocking the image. With this projector, you can still stand behind it and get a decent sized image.

If you got it at a good price, I'd be happy with it.

Found this interesting:

Display Technology: 0.65” DC3 DMD DLP® Technology by Texas Instruments

DC3 720p projectors are hard to come by these days.

I had the GT700 delivered the other day and I'm loving it. I ordered before I realized the GT720 was being released as well, but I'm good with this one. The specs aren't that different and this was cheaper. I can use the extra cash toward a new receiver and DLP Link glasses. Anyway, congrats on the projector!

I havent actually set it up yet but i did put it on a table and play MLB the show. 54" high from only 5.5 feet away. I just hope the short throw wont be a problem for my anamorphic lens.

This thing is light years better than my X1, whish only has like 500 hours.

That's interesting. I'm getting a 94" picture at 4-1/2 feet with the GT700.

remember I said 54 high, that's 106 diag. And now the sad news .. it appears the lens can not work with a short throw projector.

I missed that. I'm used to people stating diagonal sizes. Sorry to hear that the anamorphic lens won't work for you.

It's at the top of my wish list, but I cannot find any hands-on reviews.

Just picked up three of these at an awesome price to use in a curved 180 degree flight sim setup. Need to get the screen set up and test them with NTHUSIM software. This is going to be great!

I purchased this projector the other week from best buy, and i'm very impressed. It's my first projector so i dont know too much about projectors, but personally think the quailty is amazing for the size of the screen. The main reason i picked this projector was because it is 3d ready. I havent tried the 3d out yet becuase i havent been able to figure it out lol. PS3 just came out with their 3d firmware update. I downloaded the 3d demos n i turned on the 3d on the projector but still nothing. Can anyone else who has this projector help me out???

I was about to pick this one up at Best Buy (the lamp from my NEC LT170 just burned out...$350 to replace so considering future-proofing with 3D ready projector). However, Optoma has this disclaimer on their website on the GT720 product page...

"Optoma projectors cannot be used to display 3D TV broadcasts or 3D Blu-ray discs. Optoma projectors may support these applications in the future but will require additional hardware at extra cost."

I'm going to be hooking this up to a PS3, understanding that I'll max out at 720p with the HDMI 1.3 connection. Anyway, I want to be able to watch movies and broadcasts with the projector...can the GT720 support this? I don't get why it would support 3D for games but not movies/broadcasts.

Any help on this is appreciated or recommendations on another projector for 3D movies/broadcasts/gaming. I'm projecting to a 109" diag. screen from 13-15' away.

Thanks,
Carl

The PS3 sends frame packed 3d. The 3d projectors (pretty much all of them that I'm aware of) are unable to read this format, they want 120hz frame sequential 3d.

This projector is not available in the UK, so I thought of importing it.

I'm interested in this machine due to its short throw.

However, one thing bothers me: there is no mention anywhere of the type of colorwheel used and its speed.

With such high brightness, I would think it's either a RGBWRGB 4x or a RGBW 2x colorwheel.

If it's the latter, I know I would experience a very bothersome rainbow artifact from it.

Could anyone provide more insight regarding the colorwheel of the GT720 or GT700 or the relative prevalence of the rainbow artifact?

Thanks.

Mikey: I have not heard that there will be an update for the PS3 for projectors. My guess would be only if Sony releases a Bravia 3D projector would they look to put an update out for projectors.

I wound up purchasing a Samsung 46" 3D LCD package thru Dell (included Blu-ray 3D player, starter kit and even an XBox 360 Elite). I'll still keep an eye on the 3D projector space but considering the companies driving 3D (Sony, Samsung and Panasonic) get the majority of their revenue from flat screen LCD and plasma I think we may have some wait.

You can do this if you have a properly equipped and software installed PC.
I'm installing mine very soon.

Can someone test to see if there is any lag on this with gaming on Consoles.

Also, what is the difference between this (GT720) and GT700?

The deal on Best Buy is very tempting ...

kenshin, ya theres no lag, i have the gt720 hooked up to my ps3 n wii, and its great, the only thing id let u kno, is that when a game is made for 720p it auto detects it and puts it in that resolution, even newer games such as tiger 2011 and transformers, it auto detects that they were made for 720p n puts it in taht resolution.
Denver: let me kno ur setup, because ive been dying to try out the 3d on this thing and havent been able to yet.

I am getting there. This has been a frustrating endevour. It doesn't work for the Play Station though. You have to run games from the PC.

I can't get the capture card working, so right now it will only work for Blu-ray 3D and with some recent reports of issues with it, I am crossing my fingers there. With an EDID pirate device I should be able to get it working with DirectTV 3D. The last time I got the card to plug and play Device Manager reported that it installed the driver but had no resources to use it or some such crud, so I think I need to trim down the devices somewhat on the PC.

Keep in mind I did buy the model down from this one. GT700 and I have not had time to get it going. I need content too, if I am to screen a 3D Blu-ray.

The 3D is only via a pc for now. I think companies will make an adapter for our devices and it will output the appropriate signal for our tv and projectors. I might try to see if i can find a capture card with hdmi. it might be cheaper than whatever component they making.

Hello I am a newbie to these forums, but have always loved reading them. Anyway I bought the Optoma GT720 a few weeks ago and love it. It is my first projector. I was worried about going the cheap route and shining it on a wall with Behr Silver Screen paint, but the picture looks great. I am very impressed with everything so far.

In addition to projector I also got a deal on the Klipsch 500 speakers with a free Yamaha 567 receiver. I just upgraded the firmware via my PS3 so the 3D capabilities are already to go. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed that the GT720 will someday be able to process the 3D signal from my Directv receiver and PS3.

Hey are there any color/calibration settings posted anywhere? Finding the perfect picture settings for my last HDTV was super easy. I've been having a really difficult time finding them for this projector though. If anyone could help it would be greatly appeciated.

From projectorcentral:

2x-speed color wheel. The GT720 has a 2x-speed color wheel, with five segments: red, green, blue, yellow, and white. If you see rainbow artifacts when using a DLP projector with a two-speed wheel, you'll see them on the GT720. This is not much of a problem for games, since the player's eye generally stays fixed on the center of the screen. But during movies, when the eye is free to roam, rainbows may become a factor. The solution is twofold: one, find out if you or anyone in your intended audience is sensitive to rainbows. Two, use the GT720 for games, not movies.

It might work for you if you're not rainbow sensitive

Interesting.

HD67 is DC3 as well, is the 66?

Shouldn't the contrast ratios be much better?
