I need to mount this projector as close to the ceiling as possible. What are the recommendations? How far down is the image on the screen from the projector?

I used the Chief RPAU for the HD20, since I also wanted it to hug the ceiling tight. The lens centerline is 5" from the ceiling. There might be other mounts that get it closer, but not much. The distance from lens centerline to the top of the screen depends on your throw distance. Check here:

I used the Peerless PRG-UNV-W, White Precision Gear Universal Projector Mount. It's easily available if you google it. It's much more expensive directly from Peerless, so don't get it directly from them.

If you read the manual for the HD20 it says the projector needs to be mounted at least 4" from the ceiling, and if you flush mount this it will be 3.81"

Specs:

I really, really like the geared adjustment.

Can you flush mount the hd20 without a separate mount? IE Is the projector itself mountable?

No, all projectors need a mount to hang them upside down. They all have 3 or 4 locations on the bottom to secure the mount. Plus, the mount gives you adjustability to center and align the image to screen.

If you MUST have it flush with the ceiling (and you haven't told us why), then the only option is open the ceiling and install a recess. As far as how down...you should consult the manual for that information. Every projector is just a bit different, if not more.
