It is almost certainly a failing lamp. If you have clocked that many hours than it should not be a surprise. Epson's 4000 hour claim is possible but unlikely. 2000 is standard for competitive brands. If you have not changed any settings or altered any input sources than it is a pretty sure possibility that you need a new lamp. If your projector is still under warranty there is a good chance Epson will replace your bulb for free if you talk the right talk to tech support. Otherwise it is about 300 bucks. If you do elect to purchase a new bulb I would suggest trying to purchase it from Epson if possible. Even if you do get a bad bulb they will replace it without question. Good Luck!

How so?

Many people don't want to deal with the aggravation of having to change their bulb frequently, regardless of who pays for it.

I usually keep my electronics well beyond their warranty period. I've had my current projector for 5 year, and over 5000 hours with plenty of life left on my 3rd bulb.

It would be nice if I didn't have to change the bulb twice as often with the Epson.

I have too many hobbies.

I didn't intend to sound ungrateful.

I don't own an Epson; I am here as a potential buyer. My point is just that bulb reliability is still a factor for me even though Epson is offering to replace them for the first 2 years.

I have too many hobbies.

I called Epson tech support (here in the US) today.

They confirmed that the article that Projector Central posted is in fact true.

During the projector's warranty period, if the lamp fails, call Epson, and they will replace the lamp.

To get a replacement lamp, you will be asked to send the lamp to them. They will send you a pre-paid shipping label so that you won't have to pay for the shipping.

This new lamp policy is in effect for ANY Epson 1080p projector that is still under warranty. I asked if this would include the new 8350, and the three upcoming 1080p 3LCD Reflective models, and he said yes.

The lamp went out in my 8500UB in June of this year. While I didn't have the old lamp to send to Epson (he asked for it), he (Milton) was able to confirm that I had in fact purchased a replacement lamp from the Epson store, on June 28th of this year.

So, he's sending me a new lamp. I'll get it next week.

We'll this is good information so far. Hopefully epson decided to stop selling the Chinese lamps and get better quality since they kept having issues. I guess this would explain alot, most people probably got a replacement china lamp as over stock and now that the new 8350 and 8700's are out they needed to have a better reliable lamp so they are now only producing the japanese lamps. Which also explains why epson's new lamp warranty is effective since they are awear of this problem, but i guess only a small % of the Chinese lamps actually fail so they didnt see the need for a recall.

only time will tell if this issue is fixed.

I haven't seen definitive data showing it was japanese vs chinese lamp issue though, have you all seen definitive info?

About 600-700 hrs first bulb (can't check until new bulb comes) died in 8500 UB. Called tech support and they will ship me a new bulb, no charge. Saw that original bulb was from China. Are the replacements of the same quality (or lack of)? Not saying a free replacement bulb is bad, just curious what people are seeing?

First issue I've had with my first projector (purchased in 6/10) and while I wasn't happy about the initial bulb life, I was very pleased with Epson support.

Ok, so, was whistling past the graveyard of this issue when, at 850 hours, my original bulb dimmed by about 80% today - finished watching the game, but by the end the whites were yellow on dynamic mode. Seems like I shouldn't push it until the bulb explodes - couldn't that cause problems for the unit? Will Epson replace at this point or does it have to break?

It's not clear from this thread or the projector central posting exactly how to contact epson to get the folks who know about the warranty - any advice? Also, what should I have in my hands when I call them?

For the good of the order:


1) What is the temperature of the room on average? 70, very little variation.

2) what size room do you have, is the room big or small, is it near a window or AC unit?
18x30 room, 12 foot flat ceiling. pj is ceiling hung, 2 ft down from ceiling, halfway down 30 ft wall (ie. 15ft from any windows) with a foot clearance from the wall. No AC unit, no possibility of window light hitting it.

3) Did you make custom fans to point at the projector to help flow? No need, wide open mounting in a cool room. Ceiling temp is within two degrees of floor temp.

4) Do you use high alt mode?
No.

5) what settings do you use? Generally living room mode. settings posted on avs re. calibration

Hi,

I just wanted to say "thanks" to everyone who added to this thread. The bulb in my 6500 failed after 13 months and 1220 hours. I was disappointed, but as part of the rebate I got when purchasing, I received a free bulb, put that in and was back in business.

After seeing this thread, I called Epson. A nice support person asked a couple questions and fedex'd me a replacement bulb. They did not ask for the old bulb back. I don't know if it means anything, but the original bulb was Chinese, the rebate bulb I'm currently using is Chinese, but the new bulb is Japanese.

I also want to give Epson credit for stepping up and extending the warranty on bulbs.

Second projector - first bulb died after 550 hours (from china)
Second bulb - died after 570 hours (from china also)
Third bulb - installing today (from Japan, will report when I get over 600 hours.. hopefully.)

Both bulbs that blew were at around the 90 day mark...

Good luck everyone.

PS... I Clean the filter every Saturday morning, and the projector is mounted on the ceiling in a very open, cool, space in our basement.

Same here, my room is open, no sunlight in the room, and is usually about 70-76 degrees. During the Summer it may get to 80 degrees at the hottest. The conditions in my last room with my Infocus IN72 were a lot more extreme, and my original bulb had 3,800 hours on it when I sold it (rated at 2,000 hours).

Less than 500 hours and CRAAACK out it goes with no dimming. Chinese lamp. High Altitude fan mode. ECO, Living Room level (usually on Theater Black. Cool ceiling mount.

Wonderful customer support makes up for any inconvenience. Report that lamp rework underway.

Epson 8100 bulb failure @ 550 hours around 90 days.

Outstanding customer service from Epson. The customer service rep that I talked to stated that they are working to discover/resolve the problem in the manufacturing process that is leading to the early failure of some of the bulbs. Thus they want the failed bulbs back.

I'm expecting a new bulb via Fedx tomorrow :-) While its a bummer it failed so early we are very happy with the projector and Epson's response.

After reading this thread i called epson and told them that the bulb had died on my epson 8100 (it hadn't yet) but all the warning signs were present. It was getting extremely dim. I got the bulb in today (less than 24 hours to get the bulb which is fantastic). I just turned on my projector and the bulb died. First bulb made it to 257 hours. They also mentioned that the warranty for the bulb had been extended to 2 years. Kind of scared might have to stock up on free bulbs if i am only going to get 250 hours out of them.

Well, two days ago I noticed my 8100 was dimmer and adjusting the brightness level did nothing. Came on here saw the issues, got home to check the bulb hours and it was dead. Guessing I had 400-500 hrs on it maybe. I had to put a couple calls in to their tech group, one guy wanted to trouble shoot it a while but I didn't have time for that so I called back and got a guy that transferred me to an engineer and right away said "We're sending you a new bulb, it will be there in two days." No hassel, and he also said they are covering the bulbs for the warranty of the PJ. He said they switched vendors for the bulbs and they seem to be better but they won't know for sure until people get more hours on them.

My 2 year old was the most upset because he couldn't watch his balloon movie (Up) on the big screen. "Movie time movie time!" "It's broke buddy" "Broke? Why?" "The bulb died." "Why?" "Because there are issues with them." "Why?"..........

Just finished my first bulb at 1100hrs. It was half expected brightness 50hrs ago, now its 10% expected brightness.

Hasnt popped, but i'd rather it didn't release mercury into my room thank you!

9500ub.

Also had an 8100 and 8350. sold them before bulb blew. one was 400hrs one was 100hrs. no dimming at the time of sale.

BBQ7, they all are made in china. Only the box says japan, the lamp still says made in china.

Edit: just took the lamp out. The bulb is bent! i hope that doesn't mean cooling in my pj is defective. hope its bent just because dying already and generating more heat than normal.

My 8100 started getting very dim last night so I called Epson. They had me pull the lamp and check it for cracks. No cracks but the bulb is bent and a very darkish brown color. I was told to put the bulb back in and it's OK that it's brown and bent (really???). Now the lamp light just flashes red. I was then told that I would be transferred to next level support but they are closed for the day (what???).

So it looks like I will be back on the phone with Epson as soon as I get home from work.
