Seeking suggestions for a projector, used, under $1000.
for 80" Wide screen. 1.3 gain. LIght controlled room with light walls (yes, I know.. they should be dark for good contrast).
Currently using sony hs 51 - 1200 lumens and 6000:1 contrast.. Its old.. Its too dark (old bulb?).
I think I would prefer a brighter projector. I don't mind 720p also but with high brightness and decent contrast..
I am considering the optoma hd20 (new at under $1k).
Any alternate suggestions, in used values?
thanks.

I also sold a Mitsu hc3800 recently for under $1k. It's brighter than your Sony but noisier, more light leakage. However, it has the DLP "pop". Don't remember how the contrast stacked up with the Sony but w/ 1080p, it has a bit more depth than the Sony. Hope you're not RBE sensitive. The 4x wheel is not fast enough for me. Color is definitely more vibrant than the Sony. The zoom is on par. BTW, I never like the Sony's vertical/horizontal adjustment wheel/mechanism, sort of cheap.

Make sure you get one with warranty though.

Good luck.

Epson V11H373120 PowerLite 8350 Projector - 2000 Lumens, 1920 x 1080, 50,000:1,
Thus far, it seems the best option..

X2 for the 8350. see the official thread for more info, I am extremely happy with the picture. will put you a couple hundred bucks over your price range but well worth it. epson has also extend bulb warranty on these units to 2 yrs as well
