With this much more cooling room inside the larger chassis I would say they should be able to PWM the PT-54 chipset much higher

I think the point is that there ARE issues. Even if they are separate, it has both issues . I guess no chance of eliminating RBE THIS time around....every 'lower' end LED projector has had easily spottable rainbows for those who are sensitive. I myself have seen them, even saw them on a Mitsubishi laservue tv.

No color wheel isn't the answer to no rainbows. It has the POTENTIAL for no rainbows, but it sure as heck hasn't been implemented in these lower end projectors. Very annoying, but it never gets 'fixed', because it's not seen as a problem (low percentage of RBE seeing people).

Although it still needs official "end user" confirmation, a Viewsonic tech rep that I just got off the phone with, told me that the PLED-W500 is indeed capable of 1280x720P@120Hz over HDMI. Making it compatible with the Viewsonic VP3D1 and possibly the Optoma 3D-XL 3D converters.

Due to the increased lumens from using the PT-54 LED chipset compared to the PT-39 used in the Qumi, the PLED-W500 may be the better choice for 3D gaming and movies out of the current DMD .45 chip PJs.

So far in the US, both Officemax and JR.com have the best prices, but are still awaiting shipment.

Customer Service & Technical Support
From United States and Canada
Electronic Contact
T: (800) 688-6688

Sales Information
T: (888) 881-8781
Salesinfo@viewsonic.com

I specifically asked technical support if the PLED-W500 would output 1280x720P@120Hz via the HDMI connection. The answer was "yes". I then asked, that since it was able to output at that resolution over HDMI, if that would make it compatible with the VP3D1, the answer was "yes". But by all means, call the numbers listed above and ask for yourself.

And yes, Amazon's price is outrageous, compared to the offerings from other reputable vendors. I called Amazon customer service 1-800-201-7575 and asked about a possible price match, to no avail.

Now while the answers from Viewsonic are encouraging, "the proof is in the pudding" so to say. So I'm awaiting confirmation from an "end user" as well as for a few user reviews.

As much as I want to believe the reps, it's kinda hard seeing as how they had HDMI 1.4 plastered all over the product pages I previously linked, which only recently were changed to show HDMI 1.3. So it is kind of hard to take them at their word, especially when it's not listed that it supports 1280x720P@120Hz in the user's manual or on the product page.

Anyhow, I again called both the sales# and the technical#, spoke to 2 different reps confirming compatbility with the VP3D1 and 1280x720P@120Hz output. I also mentioned that it seemed to be a significant oversight on their part not to list the 120Hz supported resolutions anywhere.

I just sent my ML-500 back and pre-ordered the W500 at J&R. Even if it turns out that it is not better than the Optoma performance wise, at least I will have a lens cover and 2 extra years of warranty. Good enough upgrade for me.

Not to mention my Optoma developed a nasty habit of shutting off randomly and refusing to turn back on until I unplugged it and plugged it back in.

Awesome, I hope it turns out to be a better PJ for you. If you would, please post pics as well as mention any type of focus or CA (chromatic aberration) issues that you encounter.

Also, do you plan on using the 3D feature at all? If so could you varify that 1280x720P@120Hz is supported? If not could you use Monitor Asset Manager to retreive the EDID information and list the 120Hz supported timings?

I wouldn't worry about the flashing colours, this often happens when you try to record a projected image on a video camera.

I would be more concerned at the fan noise. Jump through the video to a quieter part of the film and you will hear what I mean.

Hi andysm

I see what you mean about the sound of the fan, maybe its not the fan and something else ? really difficult to tell from this video. Lets hope we get a review soon...acutally i watched it a few times , its possible that the sound is the Air con in operation. The video in origin appears to be from far east , air con is common in work places there.

greatrandhawa...please keep us informed about the projector when you get it, it will be pricelss to get first hand information from a fellow forum memeber.

Very quiet? Noticably quieter than the ML500 in the same mode and environment?

The W500 sounds about the same to me on normal lamp mode as the ML-500, but here is the weird thing; when I turn the lamp to eco mode, the brightness does not change at all, but the fan does get a lot quieter. Upon further investigation, it seems to be a firmware bug, which only happens in "user" color mode. In the default color modes, eco does lower the brightness and fan speed as expected.

The CA, or whatever you want to call it, looks the same to me as the ML-500, as many expected. Focus seems more even than the Optoma. Overall the picture seems slightly darker than the ML-500 but its hard to say for sure without comparing side to side. The colors at factory settings looked awful whereas the ML-500 looked great out of the box, but I was able to make the picture look good to me after manually the color and contrast settings.

The remote is much better than the Optoma, and it even has a built in laser pointer!

Hi Greatrandhawa...

Is it possible to see some alot demos ie games , action flicks, marital arts movies, HD footage ?

About the fan, is it distracting in anyway, very noticeable ?

also whats the inbuilt speakers like ?

Lastly ..does this suffer from the 16:10 ration problem that the LG HW300G does ? dont know if your aware of this but when the HDMI port is used on the LG model it stretches the image to 16:10, does the Viewsonic have this problem ?

oh i forget ..does this have a firmware option for updates ?

The HDMI support for 1280x720P@120Hz, may be hidden in the raw data of the CEA Extension block. That's why I asked if a .inf file could be posted as well. I'm still kinda new to deciphering EDID information, but 3 seperate reps said it can do it over HDMI. Who knows, they could be completely clueless as well and giving wrong information.

If there is one thing that sets it apart, it's the remote.

Hello.
Does it have an audio out?
Could you please check it with MKV files?

Thanks

This is part of the chat transcript from today -

12:46:46 PM [Teresa] I understand that you have inquiry if PLED-W500 projector will work with VP3D1. I will be glad to assist you with your concern.
12:46:56 PM [Teresa] Please hold while I check on my resources.
12:49:25 PM [Teresa] Thank you for waiting.
12:49:45 PM [Teresa] It will work since this projector has 3D capability with HDMI port.

Ordered a PLED-W500 off Amazon today, will return my Optoma ML-500. Don't know how different the performance will be - both units are identical in appearance, and the Menus are exactly the same. The one major difference in the specs is the contrast ratio: 2000:1 on the Optoma vs 6000:1 on the PLED.
