I plan on testing monsters vs aliens bridge scene today and the intro to the resident evil evil as it usually displays severe flickering in the lobby scene on most units. Even on my Sony HW30 it drove me nuts until I made a couple tweaks to make it tolerable.

Watch out for non-Epson 3D glasses, either they don't work or way too much crosstalk....

Anybody found 3rd party glasses that work well? Bought a pair of EXPAND x103's yesterday, but I don't feel like they're syncing exactly right. The Epson's feel like they have a slightly crisper image.
I'd really like to find some good ones so I can have a few extra pairs for company.

That's great m8 I can't wait to hear what you say still trying to get a definitive unbiased opinion on how the Epson handles 3D,and just how bad the crosstalk is if any

Unit has arrived and I got it hooked up. I won't say it is any easier to get going then the HD33 because both required me to put something under it to tilt it forward enough due to my shelf placement. The biggest difference thus far with setup is the 3010 has more keystone features and enough zoom to fill my 140" screen which is a plus because the HD33 did not.

I will post some impressions later tonight. If anyone wants pics let me know.

Why is that? Probably not the best way to purchase a PJ but hey what do I know? You could always waffle along like a lot of folks waiting for the next best thing and end up with nothing. Me, I have a PJ, just not a 3d unit, and now the game has changed with affordable 1080p units. I do not regret my 2d unit purchase because I have truly enjoyed it and learned a lot about LCD units. ( I have had a 3d RP TV watching 3d for about a year now though so no big deal)

MR 2 cents it because i ordered an optoma hd33 but the shop had no stock, meanwhile arts review arrived with glowing praise for the epson and high praise for the brightness so i decided to change my order for an epson.
Anyway a 2nd review of the epson seemed to think there was crosstalk and flickering in 3D mode so this put me off.
Now the hd33 is in stock on Monday and the retailer is going to call me to see if i want to continue with my order, at which point it would be nice to know if im going to go with the epson or the optoma!!! hence the rush lol

Well MR. Herb, , I see your point but you cannot expect folks to hurry up because there is much to do. Like I said in my other post, you made a decision which is more than a lot of folks do. Either will be a good unit though I lean towards DLP for 3D until I find a reason not to. I am almost ready to order a 3300 and keep my 8350 for 2d because of both reviews although that may require several nights on the sofa in the man cave due to WAF. Oh the price we pay. I suppose I could suffer through that. After all, that is where all the toys are.

Small update:

I spent a little time doing the usual preliminary calibrations because the skin tone colors are a tad on the red side for my liking. Without doing a full-blown gama adjustment I have them looking better using a combo of Art's settings and my own.

Overall this projector is really bright in ECO mode and throws an above-average 2D image. Compared to the HD33 it is a tad softer looking but the colors look closer to that of my old Sony LcoS which I prefer. I will do a good bit of 2D viewing tonight and have a better impressions update.

The only 3D material I have watched was Monsters vs. Aliens the bridge scene and towards the end when there is a lot of motion to see if it produced artifacts. The good news I saw no ghosting at all on the bridge scene and there were no noticeable artifacts on any of the other scenes. Still too early to say if the unit does or doesn't have 3D issues but I haven't seen any yet so that is a good sign.

thanks for the comparison

can you compare the two in terms of contrast ? I am hearing that Optoma has pitch blacks in 3D mode owing to its higher ANSI and Epson looks washed out as Dynamic IRIS is deisabled and it has lower ANSI.

I am watching boxing on ESPN3D and the entire background is pitch black where the crowd is and there are no lights. Also towards the end of monsers vs. aliens there are a lot of dark scenes and it did not looked washed out. You have the options of 3D Dynamic and 3D cinema when 3D is enabled and the iris and grayed out in both modes.

I will look for washout in some of the material I demo later.

Just for those wondering all DirecTV channels work flawlessly when the projector is set in auto mode and it picks up and turns off 3D/2D almost instantly when switching channels.

Thanks jmalto for your initial impressions but to be honest im just more conflicted then ever if i read the optoma hd33 thread i lean that way, now after reading no crosstalk from you i lean epsons way at this rate i could end up tossing a coin.

I never said it didn't have none just keep that in mind, I am just saying I haven't seen any yet

Honestly I think the Epson throws a better 2D image from what I've seen already and 3D has not been a disappointment for me yet. Give me until Sunday and I should be able to make a recommendation for you. Keep in mind that people want to defend their purchase so you will see a lot of varying opinions. Since this is a secondary projector for me I am going to keep the best one overall for 2D and 3D since I plan on using it for games, tv, and maybe some movies.

Resident Evil is loaded and ready to go

Well jmalto i am glad that i am getting an unbiased opinion from you as people me included tend to look more favourably on there purchased projector which is understandable cause even though termed budget £1350 purchase is rather significant for most people.
I am by no means a perfectionist but having previously owned an acer h5360 i would want the 3d crosstalk to be less then my previous PJ.

Then you better choose carefully. Once you have seen DLP 3d, well you know what I mean.

Alright guys, I've thrown a lot of material at this thing tonight and already have 5 hours logged on it just demoing stuff. I have yet to see a single instance of ghosting or flickering on this unit and took some screen shots to show scenes that I typically saw ghosting on my LG plasma or on previous 3D projectors. I would really like to know what materials PC used to review this unit and what was the input source. I am using the highest end Samsung 3D bluray player out right now running through a Denon 4311CI.

Resident Evil was a mixed bag for me. It is an MKV file that is half-sbs (which I might add this projector does a great job with MKV files) and I am not sure if it is a messed up rip that I did but the Epson displayed similar traits that my HW30 did. The opening lobby scene did not have near as much flickering but there are fast-paced scenes where the camera is constantly panning back and forth and it was almost like the glasses were having a hard time keeping up with the 3D and the panning. Very hard to explain but it was the only thing that has done it thus far.

Whoever said this unit has extreme white wash in 3D Dynamic is wrong IMO. The blacks look just as good as 2D with the IRIS going and I watched all material tonight in Dynamic mode instead of Cinema to verify this (screenshots also taken in Dynamic 3D mode.)

I will keep throwing what I can, next up is some 3D gaming tonight and college football tomorrow. Pics coming soon..

And time for some pics.. Don't expect magazine quality shots here folks, this was a quick and dirty to get you some content.

All pictures were taken in Dynamic mode, no tweaking to the 3D modes so these are out of the box. I did best I could to snap shots but this is more reference to show 3D capabilities as far as ghosting and crosstalk and not quality. I used my IPHONE4 (non-S) and it added a large amount of grain to the shots. They are also seen through the right eye of the glasses to give a true perspective of what you will see. In-person the images the Epson throws are crystal clear and quite amazing for the price tag of this unit.

Also keep in mind the brightness level you see here is on a 140" screen with about a 17-18" throw.

*No this is not ghosting on the waterfall, it is how they rendered the water.*

Hey don't know if this was covered yet but has there been any reception problems with the wireless video receiver on the 3010e, or is it pretty much plug-n-play with good quality results? also, any motion blur during sporting events? Thanks

Very interested by your postings...It seems that PC's review doesn't square with anything else that I have read...I just wonder if some of the disagreement is that some people like dlp and some like lcd.

Can I ask how brightness compares with other projectors when in 3d...for me brighness is very important for 3d...maybe the most important...and also...does the 1080p make the pic in 3d look clearly better. I dont want to upgrade if there isn't much of a diffrence in brightness or pic clarity....also are you noticing the lack of smoothness that the pc review stated...thanks

This projector is the brightest I've seen yet in 3D. If you used it on a smaller screen I can't imagine how bright it would be. Again, these shots were on a 140" screen and most people average 100-120".

I have not had any issues with motion or smoothness, it is as good or better than Sony HW30 and JVC HD250 I had before it. There is no jerkiness in 3D and I just played Batman for almost 2 hrs on the Xbox and it was was like butter with no stuttering (in 3D.)

So I just noticed two things wrong with my unit and I'm not sure if one of them is by design or what.

#1 - It is not logging hours on the unit AT ALL. The bulb is still showing 0 hours and I've had it on since I got it earlier this afternoon. I tried multiple sources and even just running the projector to see if it would change and it has not. If anything is different tomorrow I will update this.

#2 - I have a small squarish neon blue dot that shows up when the projector is on by itself and no input source (meaning the receiver isn't on.) It does not appear to show up in anything that has color in that spot or if the projector has some form of a signal (even the Denon screensaver makes it go away.) No matter how hard I try to make it show up I cannot, but when the receiver is off it is there every single time. Before people start throwing around it is a dust blob it did this out of the box and I am pretty sure dust blobs are always there no matter the content. It doesn't show up regular viewing (not even on pure white or black backgrounds) so I don't think it is a panel misalignment either. The below pictures illustrate it best as possible but I might try getting out my Canon camera tomorrow to take a picture because the Iphone had a hard time capturing this obviously.

See, no blue square/dot

is it just there when theres no signal? if so who cares, if it shows up during black scenes or better yet, open up paint on your pc and paint a black image, save it and open it full screen slideshow style. only way you'll be able to check it out. glad to hear you can see any ghosting so far, i know alot of people including my self were very pissed off when projector central dropped that bomb. good scenes that would show ghosting are black backgrounds with only white letters.

oh ya.. if it does show up, what i was told by epson to do was put my hand over the exhaust and put a vacuum cleaner up to the spot where the air filter goes.. at least that was with my 8350.. i dont think it was an epson recommended procedure, but thats what the guy in customer service told me lol

@jmalto
Epson shows the hours after 10 hours so you can test it without it showing.
After 11 hours you will have 11 hours on the counter.
As for the fine tuning especially shadow areas, you might find my blog useful
look for: Epson EH-TW3200 - the right adjustment
http://tw3200.blogspot.com/

to check for flaws of the panels, create a black and a white 1920x1080 gif picture (no compression artifacts) and go in front of the screen and look.

If you want to take a good picture of the screen, freeze the frame, put the camera on a stand if possible in center of the picture and use the 2 sec self timer, measure the brightness only on the screen, you might need to use exposure compensation for fine tuning.
Crop of the non screen parts and resize to 1920 or 1280 wide.

thanks for sharing your finding especially the ghosting - or non ghosting thingy.
