Received my 5010 from Projector People last night.

I had a 8350 and the 5010 beats it hands down in black levels & sharpness. No contest.
*I still have the 8350 so I was able to do an A/B comparison. The 8350 does output a great picture for its price range.

Pixel Alignment:
*This is located under the Extended menu & not mentioned in the current manual.

**It appears that the European model may have the LCD pixel alignment hidden.
Here are the steps to access it.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=297

I played with the pixel alignment and here's how it works.
*My red was off about 1/2 pixel to the left. Other 2 panels where aligned with each other.

1. You first choose a panel color.
Either Red or Blue. Green can not be adjusted but it doesn't matter as it's used at the center point to move the other 2 panels.

2. You then adjust the panel in each of the four corners Vertically and Horizontally.
I believe the panel movement is in 1/20 of a pixel movement. It's definitely fine movement and a lot less than 1 pixel.

3. Then you will be prompted to select a section on the grid to finish the alignment.
I picked the worst red offset which was near the middle.
A "+" will be displayed at the grid allowing you to see the panel movement.
You can then select another location and align.
You can keep repeating this as needed.
Once done, I had virtually perfect convergence.

*Other view points at pixel alignment.

Focusing:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=670

Keystone:
I played with the keystone and it does seem to work well but you will lose a bit of sharpness/focus. Probably not noticeable in normal viewing. I recommend not using keystone and using the lens shift.

Iris:
I can't hear it 5-6 feet above my head but from 3-4 feet, you can hear a slight rumbling sound when it makes adjustments.
*This is during quiet passages and scenes change from light to dark or vise versa.
Otherwise, you won't hear it over normal audio.
It's not bothersome like the high pitch tone the Benq W6000 I had for a few weeks but seems to be a bit louder than my 8350.
If off though, the blacks look great. I basically do not "see" the black bars any more.

Fan:
The ECO mode is dead quiet.

The Normal mode is a little louder than my 8350 but sounds like a PC fan.
Measured -40db about 2 feet away using my iPad DB meter.
I do hear it in quiet/silent dialog.

Picture Quality:
PQ is great. I used Art/Mikes settings from projectorreviews & did some tweaking for now but I'm using Living Room mode to get more lumens.
I will do a full calibration later as I get some decent lamp hours.
With the extra lumens and contrast, you get a great picture with that "pop" of DLP.

Edit: I have switched to Natural mode. Living Room appears to have a red push & too bright for a bat cave.

Ceiling mount:
I haven't seen Chief or Peerless release an official mount yet for the 5010. Only the 3010.
I'm using the Peerless PRG-UNV mount.
I like it because I can mount it straight to the ceiling or add an extension pole later if needed.

Please explain. I want to know what the 10 channels are because that is a weird number. Usually people have 9 or 11. Also anything below 20Hz you can not hear.
Might not be able to hear below 20hz (which is a little bit of a myth anyway), but you would still be able to experience it with the right set up.

My answers to your questions...

1. Yes. I bought this same projector and when it arrived at my house it did not work. I had the same lights come on and I sent to back to Epson and they sent me another one. Call them back and tell them that the same issue keeps happening and let them know you want another unit.

2. Not sure about that. I do not have any issues with this.

3. From what I hear about the LPE filter is that it is really nice to have. If you know where to get one let me know because I can not find one. They are in Europe and there are no US sellers that I know of.

Good luck

Hiya,

I had the same issue just yesterday.  We don't watch a lot of TV so it's sits idle for a while and I noticed it was slow to come up sometimes when not used.  But the issue yesterday was worse as I got the red lights as well.  After I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it came up fine and we watched a few hours.  The machine has only like 140 hrs on it from last August.

Anyway, I called Epson today to ask them about firmware and known issues and without ANY hesitation, nor even me asking, they said they are sending a new unit.

I'm impressed!

I saw a guy's theater room and noticed right away my dream sub sitting there. Only he had two of them. He pointed out those were his mid-subs. He has some casket sized subs for the real low stuff. You can hear down to 20 but the fun stuff is below that. Here is a propeller sub just for 1-20 Hz. http://www.eminent-tech.com/main.html

I do not doubt this guys claims at all. I have seen more.

#2,860 ·
If he does have that rotary sub than that is badass! But that thing costs about 25k! Also he said that he has to give his subs about 20,000 watts from 16hz to 1hz. On that website it says you only need 150 watts @ 8ohms. There are a lot of conflicting things being said by him such as his 10 channel statement and the amount of power he is using. I am still waiting for him to shut me up but he has not responded. Hopefully he will soon.

By the way...what is your dream sub and that is crazy that you have seen more because I have never heard of being able to produce flat down to 1hz?

#2,861 ·
Yes, the propeller sub is the efficient way to go low, the much more common way is cheaper, but takes a lot more power. The sub I always wanted is the SVS BP13. I have a SVS 10 and it rocks my house. They had a super crazy guy on HGTV "million dollar rooms" with hundreds of thousands in audio equipment in his theater room, much of it subs.

#2,864 ·
Of course, but I have spent 33 years working on my 65 fastback and still am not done. Pretty sure I am not up to finishing a sub, though I was pretty temped to build a giant horn sub for my rear riser. In the end though I am very happy with my little old bp10 and would like to preserve what is left of my hearing so the Buttkickers seems the way to go to get the feeling of a giant sub without all the negatives. Just won a used one on ebay.

#2,866 ·
Well I have been waiting for this guy to respond and it has been a week. I looked to see when the last time he has signed on and that was about 10 hours ago so I guess that I called it right. BS! It would have been cool to see what he had, but with a $3k projector it is hard to believe that he has a $25k rotary sub. From my knowledge there has not been a successful DIY attempt as well.

Epson 6010 not working........flashing blue light and fan noise only after power up.

Anybody have any ideas. All of a sudden, since almost a year of usage with no issues, my Epson 6010 will not work. On power up, I get the dreaded flashing blue light followed by the fan kicking in. Nothing else happens and the lens cover does not open whatsoever. No other lights are on save the blue light flashing and the fan, along with its noise, kicking in.

I have tried,

Powering off and unplugging cord (left it out overnight).

Replacing the bulb with the new/spare that came with my unit

As well,

I was able to put the projector into download mode and decided to upgrade it to 1.08. I was able to do this successfully based on the process and menu screens. However, same deal on power up. Looks like I'm out of luck

I have called Epson for a replacement unit and they are going to send me one. I hate the fact that we get, or at least I'm getting, a refurbished unit in exchange. For me, this is an expensive product and I don't expect to have to receive a refurbished unit in exchange. Maybe, I'm being unreasonable but it's a bummer when things break down I guess.

Anybody have any other ideas on what I can do to get this going. It was running firmware 1.04. I had upgraded it from 1.03 quite a few months ago. But it never gave me any issues until now.

Thanks ALL.

You've pretty much done everything I would have done before requesting a replacement.

Make sure to fire up the replacement and check the convergence before sending yours back.

What to do now?

I went to the projector and turned it on again. This time, red lights for the lamp. I took out the old lamp and put my new/spare lamp back in then. I powered it up and voila, it works as before. It's also registering firmware 1.08 since I upgraded the firmware to see if that would fix the blinking blue light issue I was having on power up.

Before, I was leaving it powered on for over 5 minutes and nothing was happening. Just the blue blinking light and the fan noise on and loud but no lens cover opening.

Epson has shipped my replacement but I'm not sure what to do now? Assuming this one keeps working, would you keep it or replace it with the refurb one? I'm partial to this one because it's been fine since I bought it until this issue. I'm concerned that if I return the one being shipped to me now, and then this issue happens again, Epson may be reluctant to replace it again?

How do I check for convergence? Is there a check for that in the menu screens?

Thanks for your help folks.

Mstanic, according to Epson, v. 1.08 was specifically designed to solve the loud fan/no lamp strike cycle on power-up, so I am surprised this upgrade did not work. I had the same problem and v. 1.08 worked fine. I'm sure you did this already, but did you check on the service menu that 1.08 was definitely successfully installed?

(Incidentally, prior to the firmware update, the only way I could solve the high fan start-up symptom, was to turn the unit off at the rear of the unit and turn on again.)

My unit was working fine prior to the issue I encountered. It was running firmware 1.04. Again, the issue I suddenly encountered was that the unit would just go into a continuous blinking blue light with the fan on at what seemed to be high speed and noisy and the lens cover would not open at all.

I only upgraded the firmware to 1.08 in an effort to try and reset the unit and get it to work again as nothing else I did made a difference. When I initially upgraded the firmware, which ran successfully as per the process and Windows screens, the unit would still not work on power up. It did not work also when I had changed the bulb previous to the firmware upgrade.

Then, I turned it on (some time after it was left off and the firmware upgrade had been done) and I suddenly got two red lights one of which is for the lamp. I put back the new/spare bulb and powered up the unit. It then started to work as per normal and has been working okay so far. And yes, the service menu does show I am running 1.08. I guess this is a generic firmware update for several Epson projectors as I've not seen any official indication that 1.08 is for the 6010 specifically. I don't know if it's the bulb or firmware update but I find that the projector is much brighter now on normal 2D viewing. I'm not sure this is a good thing as it almost looks too bright in some scenes.

Now, back to my original questions. Would you keep my unit or swap it out for the refurbished one? As well, how do I check for convergence.

#2,879 ·
Pain Infliction,

So, you took a refurb to replace your 6020?

Either way, I hear what you're saying which is why I'm asking the question. You're probably right and I will probably take the refurb since I never know if I will encounter the issue again with my current projector. It's just that I never had any issues with it up until this occurred and maybe it was just the bulb that needed replacing. Hard to tell, as the initial symptom was not indicative of a bad bulb and I went through a lot of crap to get it working by sheer luck.

On the firmware side, I'm not so sure Epson will ship it with the latest 1.08 firmware. Maybe, with refurb units they are more conscientious of this then they are with new units which are already boxed and ready to go. I know when I bought my 6010, it did not come with 1.04. I had to upgrade it from 1.03 to 1.04. I'll check to see what it comes shipped with though as I don't see anywhere that lists what the latest official firmware is actually supposed to be for the 6010.

How is the 6020? Projectors get updated practically every year now. Hard to stay current. Hope you're enjoying it.

#2,880 ·
No I did not get a refurb. I ordered my projector online and it was shipped to me. Upon arrival straight out of the box it never worked. I call epson to see what was wrong and they told me the unit was deffective. I told them not to send me a refub because I never got to use mine and they said they would not because it was new. By the way I do not have a 6020. I have a 5020. I must have typed that wrong and did not catch it until you responded. So far I am very happy with the 5020 but I know that a lot of people were having issues with theirs. I gues that I was fortunate not to have those problems. When do you get your projector?
