I am thinking about upgrading my current 720p pj (Panasonic PT-AX200U) to the either the Panasonic PT-AE7000U or JVC DLA-X30. This is a pretty significant purchase for me so I want to be happy with it for some time (~4yrs).

That being said, when do you think 4K projectors will be available for around $3k street price? If it's less than 2 yrs from now perhaps I should just stick with the PT-AX200 till then...

Who cares, there won't be any 4K material to watch in that time frame.

Huh? I had an HD DVD player when I bought my AX200 4 and a half years ago. That was a 1080p source even then.

April 1st, 2016 at 1:35.51 pm (that is in milliseconds).

That is when you will see 4k sources to the consumers in mass. If I am wrong, I will pay for your HT gear for the next 500 years (there is a 75-year waiting period to take advantage of this offer).

Hope that helps...

Ok I believe my memory was a little fuzzy, it was in fact 2 years earlier when I purchased my 720p LCD TV. Nontheless, and I know no one here can predict the future, I just wanted to get some impressions on if/when you think 4K will become mainstream.

I had also circumstantially heard that at >10' viewing distance that 4K would offer little refinement over 1080p (except maybe in 3D)

Well, JVC, Sony and DLP all have 4k panels. If Epson can get their LCOQ panels refined, then they should be up to 4k in the next two years or so. The Sony 1000 is around $20k street. I could see $5k to $10k 4k pjs in the next 2 to 3 years. After that, less than $3k could be 1 to 3 years after that. Unless you sit less than 1 screen width away, 4k shouldn't be a big priority. Led and laser should be more important.
