I am now on my third PA70G after various issues with the first two, as luck would have it the latest one appears to be a real diamond in the rough.
I have about as good of focus as I could expect from an inexpensive unit like this, I have defined pixels corner to corner and top to bottom with some room left in the focus dial (at 100" image).
The first unit started to color shift at the high end, each day I would correct it and the next day it was red pushed again at upper IRE ranges (80-90-100). I had a smudge on the lens and after wiping it off a blurred spot was gone but I was never truly satisfied with the focus uniformity even though it was decent (Nov. 2012 build). This unit had a nice rich look to it with solid depth and reasonable clarity (likely a unit that would meet most buyers expectations, I am very particular about AV gear and waited until my final return day to attempt an exchange hoping I might land a better unit).
The second unit had more even focus but just was not sharp anywhere initially and it was dull and washed out looking no matter what adjustments I made (July 2012 build). I took this one apart to examine the lens system and attempted a fix, upon doing so I discovered the the dial has a solid section that prevents the lens from traveling across the full range that is available. I removed the focus dial with a very small phillips head screwdriver and reset the dial so that I could have a wider range of focus available at larger screen sizes. This improved the focus a decent amount but the unit was not equal top to bottom (inverted) as the top was sharp but the bottom would not focus as well (obviously something was tilted inside but I did not wish to dig deeper and decided to try just one more exchange before having it refunded and moving on).
The third unit is a keeper providing nothing goes wrong (knocks on wood). The third unit has a much richer, fuller and sharper image than either of the first two units, no comparison really (Nov. 2012 build).
It's a real shame that LG does not have stronger QC because if everyone had one like the third unit that I was lucky enough to come across I doubt many would be returned and we would be seeing many more satisfied PA70G buyers across the net.
Will give it a few days of trial and if all is well I'll then be doing a full calibration on it to see it reach its full potential (but it's a very solid performer out of the box).
Have a great New Year everyone!
