We currently have a Sanyo PLV-Z5 projector. It's a few years old and the lamp is due for replacement. The screen shows a lot of extra blue smudges/shapes that replacing the lamp won't fix. So I think it's time for an upgrade instead of spending more money replacing the lamp.

Few things I need to consider for the replacement:
  • The Z5 is LCD, and one family member does get affected by the rainbow effect of DLP projectors.
  • It's the only TV and gets quite a lot of use from TV shows, sport, movies both day and night.
  • Don't care about 3d. Don't care about gaming.

I haven't looked into this stuff in some time so I'm hoping to get a few suggestions from people who know what's out there at the moment. If I get a prod in the right direction I can go from there and decide what's the best for me.

You didn't specify your budget, but I'll assume around 2k to 2.5k...
Epson 5010 would be my recommendation, as it is very bright and is a good projector for multi-use day/night.

I'm more interested in value for money than a specific budget if you know what I mean. But I still should have mentioned a budget.

$2k is probably around what I'd prefer to spend for what I want out of the projector. I'm also in Australia so some models differ slightly and prices are sometimes slightly inflated compared to the US. As an example, the 5010 is called the TW8000 here, and they start closer to $3k.

I did have a look at your top projector picks in your signature which is very helpful. Thanks a lot for this and for your reply!! In the 2d section it seems the JVC HD250 and Epson 8700ub are no longer available.

The Optoma HD33 and Epson 3010 look ok. The Epson has higher Lumens and a better contrast ratio on paper, and seems much more readily available over here.

I guess currently I could spend around AUD $2000 and get an Epson 3010 or AUD $3000 and get an Epson 5010.

Are there any other projectors I should look at in these price ranges? Specifically are there any 2d only (i.e. don't include 3d) projectors that offer a significant saving for similar 2d performance? Or do all the decent projectors simply come with 3d as well these days? I don't plan on using 3d so if I don't have to pay for it that would be great!

The HD33 is DLP. You should look into the Panasonic AR100U.
