I have a living room with moderate lighting during day. I recently purchased an Epson 8350 (2000 lumens) and now it is difficult to watch during the day.

My screen is a SI Black Diamond Grey .8 gain
My previous projector was a Dell 1610HD (3500 lumens) and more visible in the day.

Question is.... Do I have to revert back to a higher lumens projector to counter this ambient light effect or is there other options. And yes the blinds are closed, etc.

Thanks,
Ryan

It is hard to say as what is acceptable to one person is unacceptable for someone else. That Dell is more of a presentation projector than a HT projector. Not to mention all the specs are max specs which do not translate to HT specs. i.e. 3500 max is probably at 9000K color temp not 6500 or D65. That 3500 is most likely with everything turned up to get the most out of the projector, but when put back to a standard mode it will not have that many lumens. Also the contrast is good for presentation and not so good for HT.

A HT projector with less lumens will most likely still be a better HT projector than the dell. I am not saying go with a low lumen JVC.

I want to keep the Epson 8350 but is really isn't visible with ambient light. Should I sell my .8 gain BD and get a higher gain ie. 1.4?

I have you looked at the Panny ar100u it has 2800 lumens and 50000:1 Contrast Ratio. I really understand wanting to keep your Epson. I purchased the wrong PJ for my setup and I'm looking at others now.

From this article I would say keep the Screen Innovations Black Diamond screen and choose a brighter projector.
